Raspberry Sangria Candle Review
Brand: Kozy Candle Company
Type: 12 oz coffee mug candle
Fragrance: Raspberry Sangria
Scent Strength: Medium
Etsy is my go-to shop when I am looking for the next-best indie candle company to try. However, due to my recent maddening schedule, I hadn’t had the time to browse the site as I would like. Luckily, the owner of Kozy Candle Company reached out about trying her products. Once I landed on the storefront, I knew this was a site for me. Coffee mugs + candles? Consider me SOLD!
About Kozy Candle Company
Kozy Candle Company has been available on Etsy since 2017. The company makes soy wax candles contained in real deal coffee mugs. Ingenious! The coffee mugs are all sturdy and have some pretty cool designs. As a collector of coffee mugs (and candles…don’t judge), I had a blast looking through at the various options available.
There are no dyes in the wax, so these candles have the typical off-white wax coloring. While the scent list is not huge (you can find the scents under the Announcements tab), there is a good variety, so a little bit of something for everyone.
First impression of my Raspberry Sangria candle from Kozy Candle Company
Let’s face it…presentation can be almost as important as the product itself, especially when you’re buying candles without the benefit of pre-sniffing. Kozy Candle Company did not disappoint in this regard – the candle was well packaged and protected, surrounded by all this pretty purple packaging. My candle was a 12-oz coffee mug with the initial ‘A’ on front – sweet! The single wick was pretty well centered with a good starting length.
Now, I love me some fruity-scented candles but I’m not a fan of candy, sticky-sweet kinds of scents. I was hopeful that Raspberry Sangria would be “my” kind of fruit-scented candle, and I was basing that off the company scent description:
Sangria can be made a million different ways, and it always seems to taste incredible! Our fragrance oil is made just like our favorite sangria – We start with a pile of juicy red raspberries, add lemon and plum, lots of sweet red wine poured on top, and a hint of orange as a garnish! This fragrance is infused with natural essential oils, including grapefruit, lemon, lime and orange.
Mouth watering yet? Yeah…mine, too.
I got my first whiff of the candle after unwrapping it and I immediately knew this was the one. There was a soft sweetness with just the right amount of tart, citrus-y goodness at the end whiff.
I first tried my Raspberry Sangria candle in a large, open living/dining area. I wasn’t getting much in the way of scent throw from it there, so I decided to scale it down a notch and try it in a guest bedroom. Voilà! That was the trick. The sweetness of the raspberries came on through and I was able to smell more of the citrus fruits – the lemon and lime, primarily. And while I never got that boozy type feel from this scent, it was still more of a grown-up fruity scent that I was longing for.
The scent strength was moderate and the throw was really good in a smaller space like my spare bedroom. I think the scent will just get swallowed up if trying to use it in a large, open space.
How did my Raspberry Sangria candle from Kozy Candle Company burn?
OK, so I resisted the urge to trim the wick on the first light (the owner of Kozy Candles specifically asks you not to) and I let this baby burn for hours. I managed to get an almost-full wax melt pool on the first light. There was a rim of wax left behind that I just couldn’t get to the complete edge. I had to leave the house after about 4 hours, so I regrettably had to snuff the candle out. Would it have reached a full wax melt pool? Maybe, because this was one slow-burning candle.
On my 2nd go-round, I was able to get a full wax melt pool. The coffee mug became narrower towards the bottom, so I know that helped a lot. In any case, I was happy to get to that full wax melt pool. I hate wasting wax!
The burn itself was very clean. I didn’t have any trouble maintaining my wick and I had zero black soot floating around. The site says these candles have a 50+ burn time and that I believe. This was one slow-burning candle, which was a good thing! My rough estimate for this candle was about 60 hours.
What I really loved was dealing with the candle after I finished all the burning. I placed my coffee mug on a warmer and let the wax melt and scent my kitchen for a few days (bonus!). Once I was convinced there was absolutely no scent left, I poured my wax out and handwashed my mug to clean it out. Now I have a great coffee mug to add to my evergrowing collection!
Closing to my review:
I absolutely loved this candle from start to finish, and I’m still enjoying the coffee mug. Aside from the lack of a full melt pool on first burn, I had no issues with the way this candle burned. The scent was sweet and fruity, but not sickeningly sweet. I found it perfect for a medium-sized room and I would think these would make great gifts. If shopping their Etsy store, the even better news is that any order over $35 ships free domestically.
