Intro To My Candle Review

As many of us are stuck at home, the thought of traveling to different destinations is a welcome notion. Enter Destinations Scented Candles and their line up of candles, wax melts, and scented products to take you to wonderful places near and far. The first candle I have to review is their New Orleans Mardi Gras Parade candle.

First Impressions of My CandleDestinations Mardi Gras Candle

This particular candle was their 10 ounce sized candle with a deep purple wax and a chrome lid. The label had a picture that was perfect for representation of a Mardi Gras parade. The scent name and company name were clearly displayed. This label would be easy to remove, if that’s your thing.

The appearance of the wax deserves special mention, but it was really beautiful. Palm wax has this unique, crystalline pattern that is easy to spot a mile away. This particular candle had that pattern with its deep purple wax, making it just gorgeous. Also surprising to me were two wicks in this sized candle – great! The wicks were thin and well-spaced.

When I took a cold sniff of this candle, I thought: Grape soda! The scent was fruity, somewhat sweet and it did seem to have a little bit of fizz. Looking at the full scent description:

New Orleans.  Famous for outstanding cuisine – oh the beignets and gumbo, creole culture, jazz music, mysticism and voodoo, and, of course – Mardi Gras!  A destination on the bucket list for many people Destinations Scented Candles captured a bit of New Orleans in a scented candle that smells like the unique rum cocktail, The Hurricane.  This original and new scent for the company is fruity, fizzy, and wild – the scent is not only an adventure, it’s a party!  Perfect for those who love to entertain, have roots in New Orleans or just want to re-live fun memories of ones visit to Bourbon Street.

I found the scent description interesting, but I wasn’t getting all of that on cold sniff. I decided to light this candle in a small-ish bedroom given its size. It took a while for me to get a full wax melt pool (see my description about the burn below), but once I did, I was pleasantly surprised! The scent it self was moderately strong but it was throwing like crazy! I decided to move the candle out to a larger bedroom and still had really good results. The candle didn’t work well in my large, open living area, but I really didn’t expect it to – I’d probably need two of these candles and/or some wax melts for that area.

As the candle burned, I got more of that fruity, grape juice notes and some brighter notes, like maybe lemon-lime. It would explain why this scent seemed “fizzy,” that’s for sure. This was not a sticky sweet, grape candy-like scent. It was a little heavier and definitely bubbly. I loved it!

How Did My Candle Perform?

I did have some difficulty getting a full wax melt pool with this candle despite the two wicks. It seemed maybe the wicks were not quite large enough. Or maybe I just trimmed these a little too short (I did the standard 1/4″ trim before lighting.) I had a figure of 8 wax melt pool with some palm wax hung up around the edges. What I ended up doing was knocking off some of that wax that was on the walls and let my wicks stay a little bit longer than I normally would. This helped tremendously and I had a nice, deep melt pool after this.

The burn was clean and I never saw any black sooting. This was also a slooooow burning candle, so I can definitely buy the claim of 45 hours burn time.

Closing To My Candle Review

While palm wax candles are not my first go-to candles, I can definitely see adding this one to a regular rotation. I’d like to play with the burn a little more and see what would happen if I left my wicks a little longer. The scent itself was fabulous and I thought the throw was really good for a smaller sized candle. I’m ready to be taken away to some other vacation spots by Destinations Scented Candles!
