Introduction to my Scentsy Review:
Before I can even begin to write about Scentsy’s scents, I’ve got to be able to answer some simple questions about the company itself. I’d heard of this company before, but it’s always been a bit of a mystery and my list of questions always seemed to hold me back from trying them. For starters, what is Scentsy? What makes Scentsy melts different from other wax melts, and what’s up with those light bulbs? And here’s an important question… How do I go about buying the melts? So, I set out to find some answers.
I figured if I wanted answers to Scentsy questions, I should go to the source. So I checked out Scentsy’s main website. It was packed with
information… everything I ever wanted to know about the company and then some. The website was slick with lots of color photos and had the feel of a club, almost. The products look very enticing, but none of them can be purchased directly from Scentsy’s main website. This is a direct sales type of company so a melt enthusiast must first find a consultant to purchase through.
Visitors are equally encouraged to either find a consultant to purchase from or actually become a consultant themselves. I just wanted to try some melts, so I clicked on the area designated for finding a consultant. Turns out, finding a 
consultant was pretty easy to do by following some simple directions on the Scentsy website… way easier than I expected. Once I chose a consultant, I could get my sweaty little hands on all of the Scentsy products I wanted.
My favorite part of the Scentsy website was looking through all of the product photos. There are tons of different scents to dream about and a whole slew of pretty melters specially made to go with the Scentsy melt bars. Scentsy highly recommends melting their specially formulated melts in one of their many light bulb powered melters, so if you’re interested in the melts, it’s a good idea to pick out a melter too.
In addition to melts and warmers, Scentsy also carries a line of car scenting products, room sprays, and travel tins. Plus there are huge one pound bricks of wax available in all of the different scents for when a regular clamshell just isn’t enough. Sure, scoff now, but I know some of you could easily melt through a pound of wax… no problem.
What do my melt warmer and melts from Scentsy look like?
The Melt Warmer…
For this review I got a melt warmer called Angora from the Isabela collection. It is a pretty taupe colored two piece ceramic melter with a removable melt bowl for easy cleanup and a matching base that houses a low wattage light bulb. The Scentsy melters are electric and mine had an on/off switch on the cord.
The Angora melter, like most of the Scentsy melters, had cut-outs in the design so that while my bulb was melting the scented wax, it also acted as a nightlight in my living room. It gave off a pleasant little light through the holes…quite pretty. Well, I thought it was pretty… my energy
conserving husband kept on about the light bulb being on. I’ve got other melters in the house, with even higher wattages, but this Scentsy one had that darn light that acted as a beacon constantly drawing attention to itself. “Look at me… ppsst… over here”
This was my first experience with a melt warmer that uses heat from a light bulb to melt the wax. I knew from my Easy Bake Oven days, exactly how hot a light bulb can get. I’ve seen a bulb bake many a child sized cake, so I had no doubt that they could melt wax. While using my Scentsy melter, I made sure to follow the safety instructions, and turned it off whenever I left the house.
Let me just emphasize that I thought the melter was very pretty, and it was worth all of the good natured banter with my hubby to have the bulb turned on. He did eventually get used to seeing the light on, and since he liked the scents I had melting, he wisely conceded the battle.
The Melt Bars…
Scentsy calls their wax melts “bars”. The wax bars come in a standard plastic clamshell case of six small cubes. Each cube weighs almost half an ounce. The wax is colored to match the scent. Each melt bar package is nicely labeled with the Scentsy logo and scent name.
I tried the Cinnamon Cider scent which was a pale apple red color, Black Raspberry Vanilla, a dark purple color, and Skinny Dippin’ which was a peach colored wax.
How did my melts from Scentsy smell?
Cinnamon Cider
I thought this would be an interesting approach to a cider scent:
“Tart apples balanced with oak and spicy cinnamon”
Cinnamon Cider was a spicy, juicy apple scent. The cinnamon was just right, and not over the top. The scent smelled festive and was, or would have been a pleasant addition to my fall selections. I didn’t smell the oak in this, which was fine. It actually smelled like a hot cider drink. I don’t think I would have had the drink impression if I had smelled oak in the scent.
My only concern with this scent is that it wasn’t very noticeable in the room. I had to be right up on it in order to smell the cidery goodness. Since this was the first scent I tried, it gave me some doubts about my other scent choices and about the melter itself. After all, I had heard such positive things about these melts that, by golly, I wanted to smell these melts. With this first scent not knocking me out strength wise, I started trying to melt it six ways from Sunday. I tried melting two cubes at once… I tried melting a cube in my regular 24 watt electric combo melter, I tried moving the Scentsy melter around to different parts of the house… I mean I tried everything, accept standing on my head, to get this scent to throw like I had hoped it would.
No matter what I did, the scent was just plain light. I found out after melting the other two scents that I had nothing to worry about. Cinnamon Cider just happened to be the very first scent I chose to melt.
Black Raspberry Vanilla
Scentsy describes Black raspberry Vanilla this way: 
“Delicious, sun sweetened dark berries warmed with vanilla.”
This scent description was pretty standard. There wasn’t anything exotic or unusual here, but this scent was a crowd pleaser with my family. I do have a whole bunch of berry scent fans around here, and everyone was certainly happy with this scent choice. Scentsy’s version of Black raspberry Vanilla was quite good and really strong, and super fruity! I smelled the dark berries coming through loud and clear, however, I didn’t catch much vanilla in the scent. I don’t doubt it’s there, but my nose smells nothing but strong, rich black raspberries. Not a bad thing by any means… just the way it is.
Skinny Dippin’
This scent promised to be a little more complex than the other two I tried.
“Fresh Green apples perfectly harmonized with refreshing melons and juicy pears.”
Oh yeah! I could smell it all. Everything in the description was scenting the air. This was a fabulous fruity scent. I started Skinny Dippin’ in my melter first thing in the morning. Ha…wait a minute…look, I like scented wax and all, but not enough to go skinny dippin’ in my melter.
So, where was I? Okay, I started the scent called Skinny Dippin’ in my melter first thing in the morning and it pumped out a steady, exuberant scent all day long. I got the tartness of the apples, the sweet melon and those juicy pear notes. I would definitely get this scent again. It was refreshing and a great foil for the unseasonably hot weather we’d been having here lately.
How did my Scentsy melts perform?
Cinnamon Cider scent was a lighter one to me. As good as it smelled, my nose just couldn’t get enough Cider to be bowled over. The smell of
the wax before it was melted was stronger to me than it was while melting.
The Black Raspberry Vanilla, on the other hand, was a huge thrower. I found that just one cube had a better throw than two together in my Scentsy melter, and not only were these little cubes strong, but they lasted and lasted. I had one cube going almost two entire days.
Skinny Dippin’ was good and strong. Like the Black Raspberry Vanilla, this scent filled my home with fragrance. I didn’t find it to last as long as my other Scentsy melt, but it was noticeable for many hours.
Closing to my Scentsy review…
I had been hearing the name Scentsy around for a while, so I was very happy to finally see for myself what they were all about. My Scentsy melter is very pretty, and it’s interesting how well the little light bulb melts wax and scents the air. It was a fun change from my regular melts, tea lights, and candles.
Now that I have the recommended melter, I feel like I’m in some sort of club, minus the secret handshake. I can now choose many different 
scents from Scentsy’s large list of melts. I’m positively giddy with the scenting possibilities from here on out.
Scentsy is no longer a mystery to me. Once I checked out their website and read up a little bit, the whole process of finding a consultant, choosing scents, and picking out a melter didn’t feel as daunting as it once did.
