Salted Caramel Buttercream Wax Melts, ScentSationals [Review]

I love dipping into Walmart and picking up one or five packages of wax melts to try. What’s even better is that ScentSationals wax melts can be purchased at your local Walmart and also online. The Salted Caramel Buttercream wax melts were made during a recent Walmart trip as the packaging had me sold!

If you love gourmand fragrances, this may be right up your alley. You do have to love caramel fragrances. If you are a bakery lover and looking for cakey or pastry notes, this won’t fit the bill. It also is not what you’re looking for if vanilla is your thing. It is a strong fragrance, though, and very long-lasting.

Using our wax melt testing process, I found this melt did well in all three types of burners (electric, bulb, and tealight). I thought the tealight burner gave it more of an even performance and better scent throw overall. You can’t go wrong, though, no matter which type of burner you prefer to use.

This was a standard size package of clamshell wax melts, weighing in at 2.5 ounces per the container. The clamshell had six cube sized pieces that were easy to break apart for individual use.

The packaging had a partially wrapped, moist-looking cupcake with mounds of vanilla buttercream frosting on top. There was a drizzle of caramel on the frosting and it was sprinkled with nuts. Yum! The scent description is not included on the packaging, like you see with the Better Homes & Gardens wax melts. The wax was a light brown color and this was a hard wax. It was super easy to break off the cubes for use.

This was a fantastic fragrance! It was rich and thick, full of buttery caramel goodness. It had just hints of saltiness that was more noticeable the longer this was on. There was a bit of burnt caramel notes in the background, but it added to the depth and richness of this fragrance. I didn’t detect any creamy vanilla notes, which I was looking forward to. Still this scent was amazing and lasted a super long time in my melters.

As far as cleanup, nothing could be easier. When using the freezer method, the used wax popped right out. Nothing to clean up afterwards! I also used the cotton ball method and pouring out the wax while warm. These methods were all super easy and left little to no cleanup.

As much as I enjoyed this fragrance, I would have liked to have more noticeable vanilla buttercream notes. It would have taken this melt to the next level. The caramel notes were strong and I think overpowered any vanilla notes.

As I have become more exposed to handmade wax melts, I’ve come to prefer products that are phthalate free. There are just so many options out there, it does make sense to avoid phthalates when possible. The ScentSationals brand is actually owned by Rimports and, unfortunately, I am unable to identify whether their products are phthalate free. Likely not, but I would still like to know for sure. I am also not sure of what wax type is used. From the feel and look of the wax, it appears to be paraffin, but I am not sure if they combine it with other waxes.

• Salted Caramel Butterscotch, Mainstays This is another great fragrance but it enhanced by butterscotch notes. The caramel is less prominent.
• Salted Caramel Cupcake, Goose Creek If you love this fragrance but want some cupcake notes, try this one!
• Salted Vanilla & Caramel, Better Homes & Gardens This fragrance has the vanilla notes blended well with caramel.
