What did my candle smell like?

Several months back, I was approached by a gentleman in Brooklyn NY (Kyle Doherty) who asked if he could write an article on who makes the best “man candles” for Candelfind. I of course said yes considering I had been meaning to write one myself for a while but never got around to it and I’m so glad it turned out that way. Kyle was absolutely perfect considering he knows his candles and what he likes. What better person to critique who makes the best than a man who actually invests the time and money to find out?

The ten companies he chose I had never even heard of so I was pretty excited to learn more about each brand and one of his favorites….. Wax & Wick. Once I went to their website, I could see why Kyle was drawn to this brand. The site – masculine with clean detailed pictures and descriptions. Very simple with a sophisticated presentation. I liked what I saw.

I decided to try one of their best sellers to review… Oakmoss. I had no idea what to expect but I was excited all the same. When I received my candle, the fragrance from the Kraft box it was nestled in wafted all around me. Good sign this would be a strong fragrance. The scent…. a fresh “outdoorsy” aroma. It didn’t smell like cologne which was great. So many masculine scents tend to remind me of that. This fragrance smelled like  trees and spices. Very fresh and outdoorsy is what I keep going back to. I liked it.

Before I delve into this review, let me tell you a bit about the candle. The vessel was a white cylinder glass with creamy white 100% soy wax with one centered wood wick. The label on the candle was clear with black outlines and black print. Very simple and classic. See picture above for visual reference.

Here is the scent description I pulled from Wax & Wick’s website:

Escaping the grind of the city isn’t always available. Use Oakmoss to capitalize on relaxation without spending money on gas. Oakmoss is a scent that is plantlike without taking you too deep into the forest. With hints of Amber to add some sweetness to the base notes, our Oakmoss candle is a well-rounded alternative to the city life.

Scent notes: Wood, musk, herbs, and amber.

Yes! Great and detailed description that smells about right. The wax (to me) smelled woodsy with herbs and sweet amber. Whatever the dominant notes were, it was fresh and crisp. It smelled very bright and uplifting and definitely a fragrance you’ll want to burn close by. Every time I smelled it, it put a smile on my face.

Time to find out how it burns!

I lit this candle in medium size room where it stayed from beginning to end. Once lit, it didn’t take long to reach a full melt pool and soon after, the aroma began to fill the room completely. What a lovely candle this was to watch burn… it was a wood wick so it snap, crackled and popped the entire time which always adds such an interesting ambiance to any room. The aroma… a fresh and airy scent that did end up taking on a cologne like quality but still fresh and outdoorsy if that makes any sense. I also think it’s a scent you can’t really appreciate until you experience it yourself. Loved it!

Strength – on a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate this candle an 8 in a medium size room. 10 in a small room. Not sure I’d try it in a large room but if I did, my guess would be 6. I loved the strength of this candle in a medium room the best… the aroma filled every space and then some.

candle-flameHow did my candle burn?

This candle burned perfect. Loved the wood wick and it lit right up with each lighting. The candle achieved full melt pools within minutes of lighting the wick and it burned clean and evenly from start to finish. A+ on burn performance.

Closing to my review:

Oakmoss was an awesome fragrance and I can definitely see why it’s one of Wax &Wick’s best sellers. I could easily picture this scent in a cologne or aftershave as well. It was smooth, fresh, woodsy and sweet all at the same time. I loved it!

Kyle was right… this brand is an excellent choice when shopping for any man in your life and I look forward to trying more of their fragrances down the road.Thumbs up girl4

Happy candle hunting!
