Introduction to my review:

I love Gold Canyon Candles. I always have. When I owned and made all my own candles for my company, I would STILL buy Gold Canyon Candles. That being said, I have my token candle fragrances I order and never stray from the “list” (Sugar Cookie being my absolute favorite!). If you’ve read any of my past reviews, you’d know that I’m a foodie. That’s right… I’m obsessed with food fragrances. It’s amazing I don’t weigh 500 pounds… my favorite fragrances are definite hunger inducers! However, in a moment of pure insanity, I went against the “list” and tried a fragrance I would never in a million years have ordered: Lavender Eucalyptus Sweet Orange from Gold Canyon Candles. I will confess, I ordered more for the pretty jar it came in (someone gets Kudos for this genius marketing!). I ordered, I burned, and now…. I review!

Gold Canyon Candles began as a small home based business in Gilbert, Arizona. Kurt and Karen Waisath, disappointed with the burn quality and fragrance of so many other candles, decided to start their own business and make the “World’s Finest Candles”.  As a former chandler, I know how difficult starting and creating your own line of candles is. And let’s not forget….it’s Arizona…it’s not like you can just store the 60 pound crates of wax in your garage (don’t ask me how I found this introduction to my reviewout).  Started in 1997, Karen and Kurt worked relentlessly to build their small business into a huge corporate entity while still maintaining the superior quality of their small home based business.  Today, “Gold Canyon is a party-plan candle business offering: home fragrance in the form of scented candles, room sprays; home décor in the form of various candle holders; a full line of body care essentials; wickless home fragrance; candle care products such as wick dippers and trimmers; and natural cleaning products.”

While the website is bright and colorful, and does a nice job of highlighting their current specials, I did find it is lacking a few things I NEED in a candle website. I like to see a scent list with full descriptions. I don’t want to click on every candle to read the description. List it out, and I’m a happy candle connoisseur. While most of the site was very nicely done and easy to navigate, I was disappointed that the “Similar Scent Lookup” link did not work for me.

What did my candle look like?

I did say it was pretty. Well, it is! Bad news for you though, starting February 1, 2014… they’ve changed the container jar. Good news for you… it now comes in four different sizes as opposed to only one size. BUT…for this review, I’m reviewing a pretty blue Homeology line jar.  This little beauty is 16 oz of soft white wax with double wicks all expertly poured into a round cobalt blue, apothecary-ish glass (yes, I do realize that’s not an actual adjective, spell check had a tantrum). The label is beautiful; the scent name is on the bottom. Well done, Gold Canyon, well done.

How did my candle smell?

I can definitely pick up the lavender, but it’s not the overwhelming herbally (spell check does NOT like my clever creation of new adjectives) type of lavender so many candles seem to be infused with. It’s a soft, aromatic lavender that is nicely mellowed out by the eucalyptus and the sweet Photo credit - blueeyedennis-siempre.blogspot.com orange. Likewise, the sweet orange is just that: a nice sweet orange. It’s not overpowering, it’s not that fake cleaning-product-type citrus. The sweet orange fought its way up from the end notes to make an appearance about ten minutes into burning.  I was very pleased with the way the blend is married together to make such a clean, fresh and invigorating aroma.  The Eucalyptus melded nicely to round out this fantastic, fresh and spa-like fragrance. It was now time for the ultimate test:I took this puppy to work. My boss, who despises my much adored bakery candles (“they make me hungry” she complains), walked in and said, “What is that smell?”.  She loved it. I should have asked for a raise. She reallllly loved it.  Likewise, 99% of the clients that came through the door commented on how amazing this candle smelled. Who knew such an eclectic combination of fragrances would produce such a fantastic fragrance.

The throw was phenomenal.  I burned this candle in my upstairs bathroom and could smell it all through the house (that’s 2800 square feet of fragrance if you were wondering!). Not too shabby I’d say.

candle flameHow did my candle burn?

I have said before that I truly love Gold Canyon. As a reviewer, I always try to be objective and find anything and everything that should be “fixed” to give me a well-rounded, honest review. Well, this is as honest as they come…I could not find ANYTHING wrong with this fantabulous candle (Hey, what do you know? Spell check likes fantabulous!). The Lavender Eucalyptus Sweet Orange burned beautifully, and clean. There was no tunneling, no drowning wicks, just a fragrant, happy flickering little candle. The blue jar made for a very pretty, glowing ambiance and I’m more than a little bummed that they changed the packaging.

Closing my review:

I’m fairly proud of myself. No, not for my creative use of newly made up adjectives ”“ although they Closing to my revieware pretty impressive… but for going out of my comfort zone and trying something new. You all know what I mean… we have candle comfort zones. We shop for the same type of scents and shy away from the weird blends that may not be in our “zone”.  It’s 2014, my little candle connoisseurs, it’s time to step out of your zone!  Put down that Glazed Donut double wicked delight and try something new!

While I still love my bakery goodness candles, I am so very thrilled to have found a new fragrance, Lavender Eucalyptus Sweet Orange, to add to my “list”.  This one is a definite keeper! Happy flame throwing my fantastically (I think spell check just gave up correcting my fun new adjectives) fabulous friends!
