Introduction to my Destination Vanilla candles from Gold Canyon Candles:

Gold Canyon Candles are pretty much my “go-to” when I want strong and consistent candles. In the early years of Gold Canyon, their line never changed much so I could reliably “by heart” choose the scents I wanted without the need for a catalog. Those days are pretty much over. Gold Canyon now changes their fragrance and style of candles seasonally. That used to bug me since my favorites would go out of season but I’ve gradually become accustomed to it (what choice did I have?) The plus side? They now offer a lot more styles and fragrances and it’s fun to try new scents I normally wouldn’t have tried. Their latest… A vanilla line of candles called “Destination Vanilla” … a series of exotic world scents with vanilla as the binding tie to them all. I love vanilla so I couldn’t wait to try these.

What do my “Destination Vanilla” candles look like?

These candles are gorgeous!! The jar is a tulip shaped clear glass jar (very simple) with a beautiful dark red wooden flat lid. Looooved the lid! Around the neck of the jar is a label tied with tan raffia… the label itself almost reminded me of papyrus material that has the name of the fragrance on it. Very simply stated and perfect! There was no other label to mar the look of these candles. Moroccan Amber Vanilla was a muted orange color, Tahitian Vanilla Tropics was another soft orange, Thai Lotus Vanilla a pretty and soft pink and Brazilian Rainforest Mint was a dark sage green color. All my candles were double wicked.

How did my “Destination Vanilla” candles from Gold Canyon smell?

Moroccan Amber Vanilla

I’m drawn to exotic world type fragrances… I don’t know why… maybe it’s because I’m a home-body and never go anyplace… I have three kids, soccer games, little league and volleyball tournaments just about every weekend… I have no life!! Someday I will though (sigh)… but until then, it’s fun being able to experience exotic destinations in the form of fragrance, right from the comfort of my living room. For now, it’s as close as I’m ever Gold Canyon Candles Moroccan Amber Vanilla scented candlegoing to get. Moroccan Amber Vanilla is described as:

“Smooth sandalwood and amber with a layer of creamy vanilla, sun-warmed woods and earthy patchouli.”

Wow, I can’t believe how much I liked this scent and I’m not a patchouli fan! This was a scent I could smell in every nook and cranny of my home… the bathroom, bedroom, family room…. you name it! I could even wear this scent as a perfume or body splash… it was very pretty and definitely earthy. I thought it was on the masculine side and all around fresh and lovely. I couldn’t detect a hint of vanilla at all with this fragrance. It was amber, sandalwood and sun warmed woods all the way! I’m sure patchouli was in the mix somewhere along with vanilla but I couldn’t really smell them. This candle was strong too. One candle fragrances my entire large bedroom, master bath and traveled out into the hallway. Very nice scent! I would buy it again for sure.

Thai Lotus Vanilla

This candle was very pretty…. The color was a darling shade of pink and looked rather lovely burning. I wasn’t too sure about the scent itself though. I don’t really care for floral scents and smelling this candle, it was floral all the way… I couldn’t smell any vanilla. Thai Lotus Vanilla is described as:

“White woods, sheer musk, vanilla rice accord, lotus blossom and jasmine petals.”
Gold Canyon Thai Lotus VanillaI don’t know why but every time I smell a floral scent, I think of descriptions like “dainty” or “delicate”. I’m not the greatest at describing floral fragrances since I don’t burn them very often but just sniffing this scent burning, I thought it was a sweet and powdery kind of floral. It wasn’t “gag-me” headache inducing strong (thank goodness)… instead, I found it to be whispery soft and very pretty. I couldn’t detect any vanilla in this fragrance. I also don’t know enough about white woods or vanilla rice to give my opinion on those two notes either. Sorry folks. Just going by my nose, I would say this scent is predominantly lotus blossom and jasmine with maybe subtle hints of vanilla to tone down the overall affect. That’s about the best guess I can give.

The scent throw with this candle was pretty darn good. On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d give it an 8/9… the scent traveled all through my bedroom, master bath and wafted beyond even. I know because both my hubby and daughter complained of a floral fragrance when they walked in the front door and my bedroom is close to 10 feet away. LOL!! They did not like this scent at all. ;-)I think if you are a floral lover and like Gold Canyon, definitely give this scent a try while it’s still available. This is a great spring/summer scent and just all around lovely.

Tahitian Tropics Vanilla

This is an incredible scent!! Here is the description from Gold Canyon’s site:

“Tropical pineapple, coconut, cinnamon, caramel and sweet vanilla.”

Tahitian Tropics Vanilla from Gold Canyon CandlesBoy, my nose must be off because I don’t smell any cinnamon or caramel in this fragrance. To me, this scent is all Pineapple and vanilla… the pineapple is so tangy and delicious with a hint of vanilla giving it the perfect touch of sweetness. Sometimes the best way to describe a scent is to imagine what it tastes like… this scent (to me) was like biting into a juicy hunk of pineapple dipped in ice cold Cool Whip with those two wonderful flavors melting on your tongue. Or a refreshing tropical smoothie drink. YUMMERS!!!! That’s what this scent reminded me of. Probably not the most sophisticated description compared to this scent name but it works for me.

The scent throw on this candle is super strong! This candle fragranced the entire upper level of my home and that’s no easy feat. Loved the strength of this candle! Definite two thumbs up and I highly recommend it.

Brazilian Rainforest Vanilla

This was a very complex and unique scent to me. Here’s the scent description:

“Spearmint, caramel, water flowers, woody spices and creamy vanilla.”
Gold Canyon Candles Brazilian Rainforest Vanilla
This was an interesting fragrance and even after burning it for a few days, I’m still not quite sure what I think of it. It’s just one of those scents where you smell it and silently think, “Hmmm?… I like it, no, I don’t like it, yes, I like it, no, I don’t like it.” Back and forth, up and down… that’s how it was for me. I’d smell the fragrance in the air and think, what a weird scent!! And then I found myself standing by the candle trying to break it down and I couldn’t. I could smell the spearmint (which was subtle), water flowers and woody spices for sure and found the overall fragrance very exotic so Gold Canyon definitely captured the Brazilian destination with this one. I would even venture to categorize this scent as masculine because it reminded me a little of men’s cologne…. Very subtle though… not an “in your face” kind of scent.

In the end, I thought this scent was very earthly and hippy, unique and complex. I liked it but just not sure I liked it enough to buy it again. If you love earthly-cologne-y type scents, I think you would like this scent and do recommend it.

How did my Gold Canyon Candles burn?

All four candles burned perfectly. Clean, even burns with no wasted wax.

Closing to my review:

I enjoyed these new candles from Gold Canyon and boy are they beautiful to look at… a nice change from their standard “Heritage” collection. With vanilla the binding scent to all 4 fragrances, it was an easy choice purchasing every one of these. I love vanilla and it’s closing to my candle reviewinteresting that with the exception of Tahitian Tropics, I couldn’t detect even a hint of vanilla in the other three scents. I’m sure it was there, my nose just wasn’t sophisticated enough to smell it I guess.

All in all, you can’t go wrong purchasing any of these candles. They’re beautiful and quite fragrant.

Happy candle burning!
