Introduction to my review:
This was my first experience with Éclat Essence – in fact, prior to doing the review, I’d never heard of the company. What a major loss on my part because these were awesome candles. Love love loved them! From the exquisite packaging to the creamy coconut wax (more on this in a bit!) to the dreamy essential oil scents that while not – smack-you-in-the-face – strong… they still managed to fill my large open living space with whispers of glorious fragrance. I’ll definitely be adding this company to my list of places to shop!
I’ve not had great experiences with candles scented with essential oils in the past. They’ve either been too harsh, overpowering and eye-watering or so faint that you can’t make out any scent other than burnt wick. Yuck. So I was not sure what to expect with these candles. In the end, I was quite pleasantly surprised!
But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s get to it, shall we?
What did my candles look like?
The candles appeared exactly as the photo – heavy, frosted glass tumbler with a beautiful gold label. Each candle came in a creamy white box that would be very suitable for high-end gifting, and included a little slip of paper with the fragrance of the specific candle. There are no scent labels on the candle but there was no mixing up any of the fragrances as they each were unique and exactly matched their name.
All 3 candles were creamy white in color and made from coconut wax. This gave the candle a very soft appearance before burning and seriously, I wanted to scoop some out and use it as lotion. It just looked that creamy and decadent.
What did my candle smell like?
I am reviewing 3 different candles…
Creamsicle (orange and vanilla)
I looked through their scents trying to decide what to try and first to catch my eye was Creamsicle. I don’t know about you, but there is something about the creamsicle bar that just instantly transports me to my childhood and fond memories of summer Saturdays, sitting on the truck tailgate in the grocery store parking lot, licking the delicious creamy orange. Yum.
Being that this was scented with essential oils, I expected something that was almost “cleaning orange” plus maybe a whiff of vanilla. This was my favorite of the three candles and it was divine! Luscious, juicy orange and heady, sweet vanilla. A perfect combination. A winning combination! I’m not sure where they source their essential oils from but the quality shines through from the first burn all the way to the end. I was told that these produce a lighter scent and wouldn’t necessarily fill a room like your standard heavily fragranced retail candles – but surprisingly, I got far more scent than I expected. I live in Hawaii and we don’t have AC. As a result, the sliding door in the living room is open 24/7 and the front door (opposite side of the house) is open all day, every day. This provides a cross-breeze that keeps the house cool. It also makes burning candles slightly problematic. Any candle that doesn’t have a strong throw is lost in the breeze with sometimes no trace of a scent to be found.
It was with total shock that I went outside one day to water my plants and came back in and was immediately hit with the yummy scents of orange and vanilla. Even with the 20’+ ceilings, I could smell it throughout the lower level of the house. More gentle than fragranced candles but also more soothing. More peaceful. More zen-like.
LOVE! While I enjoyed all the candles, this one was my immediate favorite. It goes on the “must order again” list.
Breathe (peppermint and eucalyptus)
What a fabulous combination! This is not at all harsh or overwhelming. Think chewing gum + a hint of fresh eucalyptus. I burned this one in my bedroom for a few days while I had a touch of the flu. It helped clear my head and gave me a sense of well-being. But this is good for more than just a head cold. It’s refreshing and invigorating. An excellent choice for freshening up stale spaces or just giving a nice clean scent to any room you choose. A great scent to use when you’re feeling the afternoon doldrums and need a bit of waking up.
Mojito (mint and key lime)
Delicious! I’ve been trying to think if I’ve ever burned or melted a lime and mint combo before – if so, it obviously didn’t impress me because this scent kept me coming back to huff the jar. Sweet, mint, with a twist of lime. I’ve never had an actual mojito but if it tastes like this smells, well, it has to be fantastic! Like the Creamsicle, this scent filled my house. My husband came downstairs at one point and asked me what I was making because it smelled amazing. You know how you burn a candle and it just makes you smile because it smells good or puts you in a good frame of mind? Yeah, that’s how this one was. Happy, lively, yummy scent!
How did my candles burn?
Clean! No soot. I mean not even one spot. No black smoke. Nothing. They burnt evenly from start to finish without any drowning of wicks or tunneling. I clipped each wick after burning and the wax stayed clean and creamy to the end. Probably the cleanest and least wasteful candles I’ve EVER burned.
Closing to my review:
I loved these candles. When it comes time to gift a friend or family member, I’m getting them something from Éclat Essence. And I’ll definitely be back to gift myself! I love the purity of essential oils and that I never once felt overwhelmed by the scents or like I was getting a headache from fragrance overload. I also love that they burn so cleanly and aren’t adding to environmental hazards in my home. The gorgeous frosted jars can easily be washed and recycled as nice little containers for this and that once the candle is finished.
I’m a sucker for heavily scented retail candles BUT there are days where I want something that isn’t so all-encompassing… so immersive. These candles work beautifully for just such days. And because they’re made with coconut oil, I feel like a true Hawaiian. I love using things found naturally here on the islands to add character and romance to my home.
If you’re after “all natural” and pure candles… definitely give this company a try.
