I had wanted to put up a review of the Brownie & Pecan Pie wax melts from Better Homes & Gardens, a brand that can be found in Walmart stores. It was a bit tricky to find, as it was unavailable online at the time I wanted to purchase and I could not find it locally. I was able to snag one regular pack off a seller on Amazon, and it arrived pretty quickly. Unfortunately, the package had seen its better days (see photo below) and I could tell it was aged. How would that impact performance? Only melting would tell!

Who Is Brownie & Pecan Pie For?

This delicious fragrance is definitely one for those who love bakery and gourmand scents. Also this fits the bill for chocolate scent lovers. The fragrance is strong and long-lasting enough, so if you are looking for a room filler at a bargain price, definitely seek this scent out!
Using our wax melt testing process, I found this melt did ok in all three types of burners (electric, bulb, and tealight). I thought the tealight burner gave it more of an even performance and better scent throw overall. I was a bit disappointed with it in the bulb melter, as the scent dissapated pretty quickly and didn’t have that great of a scent throw. If you prefer to use bulb melters, you might want to consider this factor. Of course, it could be due to me having an old wax clamshell.

What did we test?

This was a standard size package of clamshell wax melts, weighing in at 2.5 ounces per the container. The clamshell had six cube sized pieces that were easy to break apart for individual use.

The packaging had a delectable picture of chocolate brownies, caramel drizzled pecans, and the corner of a pecan pie. The scent description on the packaging read Candied Pecans, Brown Sugar, Molasses, Whiskey, and Chocolate Brownie scent note. The wax was a deep brown color and this was a hard wax. It was super easy to break off the cubes for use.

What did we like about Brownie & Pecan Pie?

This chocolate scent was fantastic, despite its obvious age. It was rich and deep, with smooth chocolate notes (not the burnt chocolate smell that many chocolate candles can give off). The notes of whiskey were lost on me, but maybe a fresher package would have fared differently. Still, it didn’t matter, as I found this scent simply wonderful. It was not super strong, but it did carry quite well in an open area. As mentioned above, it did best in my tealight burner and not as well in my bulb melter.

As far as cleanup, nothing could be easier. When using the freezer method, the used wax popped right out. Nothing to clean up afterwards! I also used the cotton ball method and pouring out the wax while warm. While those methods were easy, I did have to give some extra rubs to get the dye coloring out of my wax bowls. This particular fragrance left me quite a bit of cleanup to do. I’m attributing this to it being an older wax melt, but it may have been due to the particular fragrance oils. Still, I was able to get my bowls clean with a little extra wipe or two.

What didn't we like about Brownie & Pecan Pie?

As I have become more exposed to handmade wax melts, I’ve come to prefer products that are phthalate free. There are just so many options out there, it does make sense to avoid phthalates when possible. The Better Homes & Gardens wax melts are actually produced by Rimports and, unfortunately, I am unable to identify whether their products are phthalate free. Likely not, but I would still like to know for sure. I am also not sure of what wax type is used. From the feel and look of the wax, it appears to be paraffin, but I am not sure if they combine it with other waxes.
With this particular fragrance, I would have loved to smell the whiskey notes. I was also a bit bummed about how “dirty” it left the bottom of my wax melter bowls. Only a few extra seconds to clean up, but still a bit annoying. It was a bit challenging to find this wax melt, too, as I discussed earlier in this post.

  • Butter Pecan Pie, Shortie’s Candle Company No, you won’t get the chocolate notes with this scent, but it’s an amazing, buttery pecan scented fragrance. Super yummy! 
  • Derby Pecan Pie, Brownstone Candle This is a wonderful blend of pecan pie with rich chocolate notes, although the chocolate is not as prominent as in Brownie & Pecan Pie. 
  • Caramel Pecan Pie, Airy Acres Scents This one is great if you are looking for more of a creamy, buttery pecan pie scent.
