We’ve already published a general Ortiz Candles review on our site, a company we stumbled upon while browsing Etsy. Today we’re going into a little further depth into a review on their Black Ice wax melt. As we noted in that review, the wax melts are clamshell style and they are rather large. They make their melts with 100% soy wax and our wax melt was uncolored. Shipping for this wax melt was super fast shopping off the company’s Etsy store.

Who Is Black Ice For?

This fragrance is considered masculine or even unisex, for those who love those types of fragrances. If you are looking for 100% soy wax melts, this company has you covered. We found this fragrance moderately scented.

These wax melts, like the others we tried, performed well in all 3 of our warmer types, so they should work well no matter which way you prefer to melt your wax. These melts did do a bit better in the tealight burner we used as the scent strength and throw were better.

What did we test?

This was a large clamshell style wax melt, oval in shape – not the typical rectangular style like the popular ScentSationals wax melts. The clamshell package included 8 triangular pieces plus a bonus bit of wax that is in the middle “hole” for a total of approximately 3 ounces per clam.

The packaging had the scent name and company Etsy URL clearly on the label. There was also a saying, Hand Poured with Love. The wax was not colored and this was a 100% soy wax.

What did we like about Black Ice?

The Black Ice wax melt was beautiful and so soothing. This wax melt straight up smelled like a man’s cologne. It was not too much or overbearing, but just beautiful and relaxing. It smelled dead on for the little car air fresheners that get so much hype.

This scent was not as strong as Watermelon or Apple Strudel, but it did have a good scent throw. It did well in all three types of burners, but it did best in our tealight melter.

What didn't we like about Black Ice?

Using 100% soy wax makes these wax melts a bit crumbly and hard to get cleanly out of the packaging.

Our other issue is just a minor disappointment, but the comment from our Etsy order stated to be sure to check out the free included samples that were being included in our order. We didn’t have any included samples in our box. Either it was an accidental oversight or a conscious store policy change. If a change, we would suggest that they correct the automatic comment for Etsy orders. Still, it’s not a deal breaker for us as samples are a courtesy and we never expect them.
