Ortiz Candles Review

An Etsy shop with 100% soy wax melts

Why You Should Trust Us

Candlefind has been in business since 2003 as a labor of love and dedication. Throughout the years, we have tested hundreds of candles and wax melts, standardizing our processes along the way. This assures that we test products in similar ways to give our insight to what you might expect in your home. We test every single product we review or endorse on our site. We never have (and never will) accept money, products, or gifts in exchange for a positive review. We are avid candle and wax melt lovers who have made reviewing them our business.

This post may contain affiliate links. This means that if you click through one of them and make a purchase, Candlefind may receive a small commission, at no additional cost to you. It is your ongoing support that helps make Candlefind successful, and for that we are thankful.

We love shopping for candles and wax melts on Etsy, as this is where you can find some true mom-and-pop shops all over the world. We stumbled upon Ortiz Candles during one of our decor shopping trips, and we couldn’t pass up on the wax melt deal just before the holiday rush. We purchased quite a few wax melts in a variety of scents for this review. The melts arrived quickly and we were amazed at the size of the wax melt packs.

Ortiz Candles is located in Ramona, California, and offers their wax melts in oval clamshell packaging, not the typical rectangular style like the popular ScentSationals wax melts. The clamshell package holds 8 triangular pieces plus a bonus bit of wax that is in the middle “hole” for a total of approximately 3 ounces per clam. Per the website listing, the wax melts are 100% soy and it appears they list what they have available for sale. You are also contact them for scent availability or to request more than what is listed. We ended up ordering a couple of holiday fragrances as it was close to season as well as a couple of other scents. Here are the fragrances we tried:

Candlefind uses a specific process to try to test all candles and wax melts on as even a playing field as possible. For wax melts, we use a tealight melter, hotplate melter, and a bulb melter to test each fragrance when possible. We also use approximately the same amount for each test (in this case 1 triangular piece). Here are our thoughts on each wax melt tested, but if you’re in a hurry scroll down to the bottom for our overall thoughts!

Apple Strudel Wax Melt

Bakery fans unite! This wax melt is perfect for those who love bakery or gourmand scents, with your homes or spaces smelling like there is something delicious just out of the oven. We also found this scent perfect for the winter time and holiday season.
The scent description reads: Fresh baked green applies, cloves and cinnamon. Middle notes of vanilla
Ortiz Apple Strudel Wax Melts

This fragrance was wonderful and warm, like a warm, cinnamony pastry. It was doughy with a bit of buttery notes. The bright, sweet apple predominated, though, and made this a warm, wonderful cold weather type of melt. The warm vanilla notes just wrapped us up in a blanket for that added bit of ahhhh!

We found this wax melt really nice and moderately strong. It wasn’t a complex fragrance, but something that was very welcoming and appropriate for the holiday season. It performed well in all of our melters, but it did the best in our tealight melter.

Watermelon Wax Melt

Mmmm…the watermelon wax melts were fantastic and would be a perfect summer burn! The scent was fruity sweet but not candy-like. It was more like a watermelon fragranced drink. There were no green notes to make it seem like a true watermelon scent.
The scent description reads: Traditional Watermelon and not too sweet
Ortiz Watermelon Wax Melts

These wax melts were really good, moderately strong and long lasting. These had a really good scent throw but not as powerful as Apple Strudel. They did well in all 3 types of burners, but we did think they did better in the bulb burner.

Black Ice Wax Melt

If you like more masculine or cologne type fragrances, the Black Ice wax melt just might be for you. It was beautiful and so soothing.
The scent description reads: Musky scent with clean citrus and floral undertones
Ortiz Black Ice Wax Melts
This wax melt straight up smelled like a man’s cologne. It was not too much or overbearing, but just beautiful and relaxing. It smelled dead on for the little car air fresheners that get so much hype.

This scent was not as strong as Watermelon or Apple Strudel, but it did have a good scent throw. It did well in all three types of burners, but it did best in our tealight melter.

Donuts With Santa Wax Melt

More bakery goodness with Donuts With Santa wax melts! This scent was marked as a holiday fragrance, but it would work well anytime of the year.

The scent description reads: Christmas bakery – vanilla glazed pastry with pinch of cinnamon
Ortiz Donuts with Santa Wax Melts
This smelled like warm, fried dough with a bit of sweetness to it. There were some spice notes, but just a tad. It was a bakery lovers delight!
We found this fragrance to be moderately strong and long lasting as well. The melts did well in all 3 types of burners, but they did the best in our tealight melter.

What did we like about Ortiz wax melts?

We enjoyed the fragrance variety and large sized clamshell packages. The fragrances appeared to be spot on with the scent descriptions for the most part, and they all performed fairly well no matter what type melter we used. Most of them performed best in the tealight burner, as they appeared to give off a stronger scent throw and lasted longer. The prices are reasonable on the Etsy site (the clamshells were regularly $5.75 at the time of this review), and the shop offered free shipping on orders over $35. We got our order very quickly (4 days from order to delivery!) and everything was packaged well.

What didn't we like about Ortiz wax melts?

There is a nice variety of fragrances, but overall the listed available fragrances was limited. The shop does state that you can contact for availability, so there may be more scent offerings than what is listed, but we did not seek that out at this time. Using 100% soy wax makes these wax melts a bit crumbly and hard to get cleanly out of the packaging.

Our other issue is just a minor disappointment, but the comment from our Etsy order stated to be sure to check out the free included samples that were being included in our order. We didn’t have any included samples in our box. Either it was an accidental oversight or a conscious store policy change. If a change, we would suggest that they correct the automatic comment for Etsy orders. Still, it’s not a deal breaker for us as samples are a courtesy and we never expect them.

Candlefind's Recommendation

We loved our first order with Ortiz Wax Melts in their Etsy shop. We experienced super fast shipping and the products were packaged really well. The clamshells are huge (approximately 3 ounces) and the scents are really good. The melts are not super strong, but they throw well and last a long time.

Overall

4.0
4 flames rating

While we found working with the melts a little messy (not surprising as they are 100% soy), this is a company we would happily repurchase from again. We do have this company saved in our Favorites & plan on revisiting again soon!
