We love shopping for candles and wax melts on Etsy, as this is where you can find some true mom-and-pop shops all over the world. We stumbled upon Ortiz Candles during one of our decor shopping trips, and we couldn’t pass up on the wax melt deal just before the holiday rush. We purchased quite a few wax melts in a variety of scents for this review. The melts arrived quickly and we were amazed at the size of the wax melt packs.
Candlefind uses a specific process to try to test all candles and wax melts on as even a playing field as possible. For wax melts, we use a tealight melter, hotplate melter, and a bulb melter to test each fragrance when possible. We also use approximately the same amount for each test (in this case 1 triangular piece). Here are our thoughts on each wax melt tested, but if you’re in a hurry scroll down to the bottom for our overall thoughts!
Apple Strudel Wax Melt
This fragrance was wonderful and warm, like a warm, cinnamony pastry. It was doughy with a bit of buttery notes. The bright, sweet apple predominated, though, and made this a warm, wonderful cold weather type of melt. The warm vanilla notes just wrapped us up in a blanket for that added bit of ahhhh!
We found this wax melt really nice and moderately strong. It wasn’t a complex fragrance, but something that was very welcoming and appropriate for the holiday season. It performed well in all of our melters, but it did the best in our tealight melter.
Watermelon Wax Melt
These wax melts were really good, moderately strong and long lasting. These had a really good scent throw but not as powerful as Apple Strudel. They did well in all 3 types of burners, but we did think they did better in the bulb burner.
Black Ice Wax Melt
This scent was not as strong as Watermelon or Apple Strudel, but it did have a good scent throw. It did well in all three types of burners, but it did best in our tealight melter.
Donuts With Santa Wax Melt
More bakery goodness with Donuts With Santa wax melts! This scent was marked as a holiday fragrance, but it would work well anytime of the year.
What did we like about Ortiz wax melts?
We enjoyed the fragrance variety and large sized clamshell packages. The fragrances appeared to be spot on with the scent descriptions for the most part, and they all performed fairly well no matter what type melter we used. Most of them performed best in the tealight burner, as they appeared to give off a stronger scent throw and lasted longer. The prices are reasonable on the Etsy site (the clamshells were regularly $5.75 at the time of this review), and the shop offered free shipping on orders over $35. We got our order very quickly (4 days from order to delivery!) and everything was packaged well.
What didn't we like about Ortiz wax melts?
Our other issue is just a minor disappointment, but the comment from our Etsy order stated to be sure to check out the free included samples that were being included in our order. We didn’t have any included samples in our box. Either it was an accidental oversight or a conscious store policy change. If a change, we would suggest that they correct the automatic comment for Etsy orders. Still, it’s not a deal breaker for us as samples are a courtesy and we never expect them.
