Today we’re turning our focus to a small, independent soy candle company based in New York in this Mitala Candle Co. review. The candles are luxurious and fragrances are complex, for a beautiful mix perfect for all sorts of candle lovers.
A Closer Look at Mitala Candle Co.
Mitala Candle Co. is the birthchild of Danielle Cobb, with each candle being handpoured in Brooklyn, New York. According to Danielle, the name was inspired by the Jamaican proverb “Mi likkle but mi tallawah,” meaning “I’m small but mighty.” She began candlemaking as a personal hobby that eventually grew into this luxury line of candles made with 100% soy wax, double cotton wicks, and non-toxic fragrance oils.
We consider these a luxury line of candles that are very reasonably priced. The stated burn time is 70 hours, and we would agree with that after testing.

Products Offered
Mitala offers currently offers one main candle size, a two-wick, 15 ounce candle jar with two wicks. The candle vessels are a gorgeous black matte color and are heavy in the hand. They come in white gift boxes that include the scent name. The candles are made with 100% soy wax with natural coloring. They also offer a Discovery Set that includes 8 1-ounce tin candles so you can sample their scent offerings.

Vanilla & Fig
These candles each come housed in a white box that makes a great contrast to the dark, black vessels. The candle itself was heavy in the hand and made of great quality. The wax was natural (undyed) and there were two thin wicks. The company and candle scent names were displayed towards the bottom of the vessel, leaving the majority of the jar uncovered. This contributed to the beauty and elegance of the candle.

The candle fragrance itself was really beautiful. It was a rich, deep vanilla scent with a bit more spice to the fragrance than sweetness. There was an element of sweetness, though, from the fig, making this a well-balanced and beautiful, relaxing fragrance. It was on the lighter side, with the strength being 3 out of 5 and the hot throw rating 4 out of 5.
Cinnamon Buns
This candle was similar to Vanilla & Fig as it had the gorgeous black matte vessel with two single wicks. The scent name & company names were on the front of the jar. There was one spot near the top of my candle were the black had flaked off. Otherwise, this candle was perfect! It smelled like sweet cinnamon on cold sniff.

This candle became so much more once it started burning. I did smell more of the yeasty, dough-like scent you would get from freshly baked cinnamon rolls. There was also a bit of sweetness from vanilla icing and the cinnamon took a backseat. It was really, really good and so delicious! The candle had an even burn, taking it a long while to get a full wax melt pool. I would rate the scent strength around a 3 and throw 3.5 out of 5.
Citrus Grove
I love a good citrus scent, and Citrus Grove had me on the first whiff! It smelled like freshly peeled oranges on cold. The candle jar was the black matte glass vessel with the double wicks and white, soy wax. The company and scent names were on the vessel and easy to read.

Once burning, I got more of the juicy orange notes and it was fabulous. The scent of lime started to come through and added a bit of tartness to the mix. I don’t think I ever picked out the basil notes, but it didn’t lessen my love of this fragrance overall. I will say that after burning the candle for about 3 hours at a time, I did start smelling that burning fuel smell that you can get with citrus candles. This one is great if you want to burn it for 2-3 hours at a time. I would rate the scent strength a 4 out of 5 as well as the throw.
Midnight Oud
My Midnight Oud candle was incredibly sexy and warm. The cold sniff was complex and a bit masculine. It was in the standard black matte vessel, double wicked, and easily identifiable with the company and scent names on the front.

Of all the fragrances I tried, I found Midnight Oud the most complex and beautiful. It was a bit earthy and warm, with just a bit of sweetness to it. It did remind me of Mahogany Teakwood from Bath & Body Works, but it was definitely more earthy. To my surprise, this scent was my favorite. It also had a nice, clean burn and the wicks were easy to manage. I would rate the scent strength a 4 out of 5 with the throw a 4 as well.
Overall Impression of Mitala Candle Co.

We really found the soy candles from Mitala to be excellent quality. The beautiful candles burn evenly and cleanly with double wicks that were very easy to maintain. We loved the fragrances and think that they have a good variety from which to choose. While we thought the vessels themselves were luxurious, the box that each candle was housed in felt a little bit less so, leading to a mismatch in expectations. Overall, though, these are great candles and ones we think you would be remiss not to try. Our overall rating is 4.5 out of 5.
