As we continue to try out new-to-us brands, we love coming across small, independent companies that have a focus on more healthy, non-toxic candles. Such is the case with JARE Candles, handcrafted soy candles straight out of Baltimore, Maryland.
A Closer Look at JARE Candles
JARE Candles were created by April Ryan, a journalist and White House correspondent, and her husband, James Ewing, a retired Naval officer. Together they created a brand that focused on clean-burning, non-toxic candles that are meant to create experiences and illuminate lives. The impetus behind the candles stems from April’s mother, Vivian, who dealt with her struggles after a diagnosis of leukemia. April became keenly aware of the importance of healing environments and the purity of our interior spaces. This led her on the journey to learn about the unique properties of soy based candles.
JARE Candles are made with 100% soy blend for a clean, non-toxic burn. This company utilizes some unique essential-oil blends that you will not find elsewhere, leading to a more personalized experience from the brand.
Products Offered
As of this writing, JARE carries several sizes of candles, including the classic tumbler jar (8.7 ounces) and a straight sided tumbler jar (8.5 ounces). They carry an amber glass jar candle weighing in at 5 ounces, and they carry two travel tin candle sizes – 3.4 ounces and 11.5 ounces. All of the candles are made of 100% soy blended wax and contain single wicks. JARE does not use coloring to dye their wax.
Peppermint Patty
All of our candles tested were the straight sided tumbler jars, which were packaged in a white box with an open face to display the label. The candle jar itself was a heavy bottom glass and made of great quality. The wax was undyed and there was a single, thick wick in the center. The label took up the majority of one “side” of the jar, with the company and scent names clearly displayed. There was a luxurious feel to the candle. The cold sniff was a minty burst with rich, deep chocolate. Yummy!
The scent description reads: Satisfy your senses with ‘Peppermint Patty,’ a candle which offers a non-edible version of the delightful Girl Scout Cookie Thin Mints through its enchanting scent. This scent offers more than simple deliciousness because it combines minty freshness with mellow notes to become a perfect fragrance for winter and all seasons after.
This scent, once burning, was a chocolate lover’s delight. The chocolate notes were distinctly dark chocolate notes, rich and thick – never giving off that burned chocolate smell. The mint notes kept wafting in & out throughout the burn, keeping this scent fresh and invigorating. I thought of it more as an Andes Thin Mint candy, and it was delicious! The candle did get a full wax melt pool fairly quickly and did keep an even burn. I would rate the scent strength on this candle 3 out of 5 with a throw of 3.5.
Lemon Head
Lemon scents are one of my favorites, so I was thrilled to test Lemon Head. This candle did have a bright, zippy cold scent that was energizing. One of the things I did learn about these candles is that their thick wicks did allow for full wax melt pools in a relatively short period of time, but you do have to be diligent about trimming the wicks to keep them from becoming mini-torches.
The scent description reads: Indulge in the vibrant allure of ‘Lemon Head,’ a fragrance that whispers of the lavish opulence found in the corridors of the most exclusive casino hotels in Las Vegas. We’ve captured this olfactory gem and brought it home to JARE, presenting you with an experience that transcends the ordinary.
This fragrance was so much more than a lemon scented candle. It was festive and bright, with a great mix of sweet lemon and tart lime notes. This was more of a sweet fragrnce, but it wasn’t cloying at all. I found that this candle was best at my workspace during the day as it kept me energized. I would rate the scent strength on this one 4 out of 5 with the throw the same.
Amalfi
My Amalfi Coast candle was just pure joy. It had some watery, ozone notes that were blended well with some citrus notes…it reminded me much of relaxing on the beach. I was able to get a full wax melt pool with this candle and kept a nice, even burn throughout.
The scent description reads: Experience the sun-soaked Southern Coast of Italy through ‘Amalfi,’ where the country’s beloved citrus fruit blends with relaxation techniques in a generous soy-based pleasure.
Once my Amalfi candle was lit, I noticed it started off with mostly a fruity fragrance and then settled on into its watery, ozone notes. The bursts of fresh fruits did carry throughout the burn of this candle. It was amazing & very relaxing. I would rate the scent strength on this one 3.5 out of 5 with a 4.5 scent throw.
After Hours
After Hours was a surprise one for me, as I did not expect to like it as much as I did. I found this fragrance to be the most complex of the four I tested, and it was an absolutely stunning fragrance. I was anticipating something more masculine, but this was actually a great unisex fragrance.
Once this candle was burning, I could smell the bubbly champagne notes blended so well with bright citrus notes. As it continued to burn, more of the musk notes emerged and helped ground the fragrance overall. I could definitely see this candle scent being the star attraction on a romantic dinner at home. I would rate the scent strength a 3 and throw was around 3.5.
Overall Impression of JARE Candles
I am so excited I got to try JARE Candles, as I think they are a great, luxury style candle brand. The candles have great presentation and are made of high quality products. I did get full wax melt pools easily with each candle, but I did have to keep the wick trimmed every couple of hours to avoid a huge flame and black sooting. These candles had very good scent strengths and throws, but none of the ones we tested were room fillers. We find these candles to be best suited for small or medium sized rooms, or like I used Lemon Head on my work desk. The candles did burn a little faster than I would like, but I managed to get several hours of burn from each candle (about 35 hours each). Overall I find these candles really good and rate them 4 out of 5. We suggest you give them a try & tell us what you think!
