How To Find Discontinued Candles: Our Ultimate Guide

Looking for a candle that has been discontinued? We show you how!

You have finally found your favorite candle or wax melt fragrance, only to find…it’s been discontinued! Or maybe you’re reading one of our archival reviews and really, really want to try a scent, but you cannot find it anywhere. Bummer! We get it and we totally feel your pain. There are a number of reasons that you might not be able to find a candle fragrance from a particular company anymore…maybe it wasn’t a great seller, the wax oil changed or became too hard to source, or they reformulated/renamed the product. Sadly, we also know how hard it is for small, indie based candle companies to make it year after year, and sometimes the candle company closes its doors. As frustrating as this can all be, we do have some ideas on how to find discontinued candles and wax melts. It’s very rare that you cannot find a specific candle anymore…depending on how much you are willing to pay & where you look!

Flea Markets

Your local flea market is a great place to find discontinued candles, and you get the advantage of being able to sniff in person! Not only will you find various people giving away their scented treasures (gasp), but you may also find small, mom-and-pop businesses that sell strictly or mainly through markets. You mostly want to look for crafts and home goods, but you can find a ton of discontinued candles and melts at things such as estate sales. This is a great place to find a number of candle accessories, too.

When shopping flea markets for discontinued candles, it is best not to go with a specific candle in mind. Carry a list around with you of what you might be looking for and let the market surprise you. If you become friendly with the owner, you can ask them to keep an eye out for specific candle brands and fragrances.

eBay

The world to discontinued and hard to find candles can by your oyster at eBay. Just type in the word “candle” into the search box and see what awaits. In the search bar, type in “discontinued candles” or something like “retired Yankee Candles.” You can also look for the acronym HTF in the listing which stands for hard to find. You will find new and used discontinued candles this way.

Some candles will be unused and some will be burned. Be sure to check the pictures out carefully and read the descriptions in full. While shopping eBay can be super fun, it can also be a breeding ground for scammers, so keep alert and only buy from those with at least a 90% approval rating.

Amazon

Amazon is another place you can find discontinued candles. Mostly you can find the discontinued fragrances of big box stores, like Yankee Candle, Bath & Body Works, and even some luxury brands. Type in key phrases such as “Yankee Candle retired” or “Yankee Candle discontinued” to find a selection of scents.

The prices through shopping by this method tend to run a little higher, but if you are dying to find an old retired scent, this is certainly a place to try.

Social Commerce Marketplaces

Social commerce marketplaces like Mercari, Poshmark, and Facebook Marketplace are places you’ll want to stalk…we mean, visit…in order to find retired and discontinued scents. Here normal users like you & me will put up candles they no longer want or that they have in excess. There are also some regulars who source products and put them up for sale. In either case, you can find huge bargains and several retired fragrances you may be searching for.

On these sites you can find just about anything – put in keywords to search for such as “brand name discontinued” or “brand name retired.” If you don’t mind that the candle may have been burned before, search for “brand name used.” You can save your searches and make an offer on any candles or wax melts you might want. Be sure to read reviews and check out individual profiles to minimize your chances of getting duped.

Other Online & Physical Stores

There are dozens of other places to find used or discontinued candles. Stores such as Joss & Main or One King’s Lane keep a rotation of candles and accessories in stock. What they have varies, but you can most often find these at a discounted price. Shop there frequently enough, and you’ll learn what stores generally carry which brands. For example, Joss & Main carries a lot of Illume candles at the time of this article, but we also found some Blomus and Mikasa candles, too! Check pricing as sometimes these stores will jack up the price. It’s best to shop these stores when they are having a sale.

There are stores such as TJ Maxx and Tuesday Morning where you can often find older candles. It’s hit or miss here, though, and you are not often guaranteed to find a particular scent or even brand. They do have discounted pricing, though, so snatch up what you may find if you think you’re interested!

Social Media Groups/Communities

There are a ton of Facebook groups and other social media communities where you can find discontinued candles and wax melts, sometimes at very reasonable prices. You will need to tread carefully and spend time getting to know the community before you pony up.

You can find a wealth of deals this way, but you can also fall victim to a scam, identity theft, and more. Don’t forget to do your due diligence and only engage with those who have a good reputation.

That’s it! You should be armed with plenty of knowledge on how to find a discontinued candle or two. We will later be posting how to find deals on specific sites, so stay tuned for those details. Also in the fall ofo this year, be on the lookout as we open up our own Scented Surplus stash on Mercari and Poshmark!
