Introduction to my Modern Alchemy Corcovado review:
There is something really special about D.L. & Company candles. They are just so luxurious and there is a wide selection from which to choose. Whether you want to take a walk on the wild side (goat leg candle, anyone?) or you’re looking for something a bit more reserved, I bet you can find it here.
That being said, there are a number of their scents and candle lines I just haven’t had the chance to try yet. I was ecstatic when the opportunity arose to try out some of their newest candles – sign me up! I’ll be reviewing a few of their candles, starting off with this beauty: Corcovado in the Modern Alchemy lineup.
What did my Modern Alchemy Corcovado Candle look like?
Did I mention these candles were luxurious? That was evident from the start with this Corcovado candle…it came housed in a two-part box. The bottom was gold with the scent name written on it. The top part of the box was stark white and held the company name. It was a really pretty box and one that could be gifted as-is.
The candle itself was a heavy, white glass jar with a super thick bottom. The bottom part of the jar was clear and made a stark contrast to the rest of the jar, which was white. The jar was larger at the base and tapered slightly toward the top. A very elegant looking candle. The wax was white and there was a single centered wick.
What did my Modern Alchemy Corcovado Candle smell like?
Corcovado is a mountain in Brazil which hails breathtaking views of Rio de Janeiro and is the home of the Christ The Redeemer statue. It’s one of the select few places on my bucket list. I can close my eyes and visualize the beautiful city of Rio over 2300 feet down below and the crystal blue waters. But what might I smell? I was so curious as to what interpretation D.L. & Company would lend to this natural wonder. Here are the fragrance notes:
“Coconut, Tonka Bean, Vanilla Concrete, Sandalwood, Ginger, Gardenia”
I love coconut scents, so I couldn’t wait to burn this candle. I lit this candle in my powder room (my usual starting point) and left it for a brief period to return to magic. Pure magic! But it was not the coconut I smelled…I found this candle quite floral, with the gardenia being the main player in the bunch. There was a creaminess, almost buttery, kind of smell to it, with a generous helping of creamy coconut and slightly sweet vanilla. The sharp ginger pierced through the blend on occasion – enough to keep this scent very interesting and different. The sandalwood was a background note and stayed relatively constant, lending a sense of sensuality to the overall scent. Did it match my overall expectations? Why yes…yes, it did.
How did my Modern Alchemy Corcovado Candle burn?
This candle obtained an almost full wax melt pool in a relatively short amount of time. I did have just a small rim of wax as this candle burned down. The candle burned cleanly and I didn’t notice any black sooting. Since the jar was white, that was one of my main indicators – when all was said and done, the rim of the jar was still mostly pure white…I did have just a little of black at one of the edges of the jar. I must mention how incredibly beautiful this jar was while burning. It glowed and I could view the flame flickering within the white glass jar. Mesmerizing!
Closing to my Modern Alchemy Corcovado Candle review:
I have a collection of D.L. & Company candles to review, but my hand went immediately for this one. Corcovado intrigued me from the very beginning and, I must say, it did not disappoint. This is a beautiful candle both in looks and scent. This candle leaned heavily to the floral side, so keep that in mind should you want to purchase it. I have routinely not been into florals, but this scent blend was so incredibly complex and beautiful that it completely stole my heart. This is a scent I would buy over and over again. Perhaps I’ll even take it with me on a trip to Brazil. Hey, it could happen.
Happy candle burning!
