One of the best parts about running this business is getting exposed to dozens of small, independent candle companies – learning about their business, their owners, and their products. While we do review big name companies and brands, it’s the small businesses that we really love to support and to spread the word. Sunset Palm Candles is one of the indie companies that patiently waited while we were rebuilding our website and able to reopen for review requests. We are thrilled to finally be able to review this brand!
A Closer Look at Sunset Palm Candles
Sunset Palm Candles is a company located in beautiful Southwest Florida, my new stomping ground! It was started by husband-wife duo, Lori & Joe Murray, in 2020 when they were looking to relocate to the area. While we can all agree that we are constantly surrounded by natural beauty, they did realize that they needed more than ocean/beach-inspired scents if they were to build a candle line. Lori & Joe spent countless hours testing and refining until they came up with a great selection of clean, highly fragranced candles. They currently offer about thirty different fragrances in a wide variety of scent categories.
I was able to test four of their 16 ounce candles – one each of Pure Bliss, Smoldering Campfire, Ocean Mist, and Berry Patch. Each of these candles were single wicked and had a screw-top lid.

Products Offered
Sunset Palm Candles offers two candle jar sizes – 9 oz and 16 oz – with screw top lids. They also have a new signature soy candle series in a handful of scents in 12 oz jars. They offer their scents in clamshell style wax melts to get the fragrances without a wick. You can find several candle accessories here, like candle toppers, wick trimmers, wax melters and more.

Pure & Simple

This candle smelled oh…so…good! It smelled like a creamy vanilla fragrance with hints of buttery caramel notes. The scent was not overly sweet and did not have any of that fake vanilla type of smell. This candle scent was absolutely dreamy and I obtained a full wax melt pool with this one. I would rate the scent strength as moderately strong (3-3.5) with a good scent throw (3.5).
Berry Patch
My Berry Patch was shaded a beautiful purplish-pink color which instantly put me in a good mood. The cold sniff on this candle was simply amazing! This was also the first Sunset Palm Candle I burned and I learned I wanted to keep my wicks a little bit longer than I normally would on the first burn. I ended up having to use the foil trick for this candle to force a full wax melt pool, but I had no problems after that.

This candle was probably my favorite of the bunch! There was a bit of tartness to the scent, but it was also filled with bright and slightly sweet/tangy notes. The warmth of the evergreen notes helped ground this fragrance, making it bold and lingering. The scent strength on this candle was around 4 with a 4.5 throw.
Ocean Mist
The Ocean Mist candle was a light bluish-green color, which I thought was perfect for the scent. I kept my wick a little longer on the first burn with this candle and used a Yankee Candle Illuma-lid to tame the flame. I was able to get a full wax melt pool on this candle without any difficulty.

This scent was amazing – fresh and clean with a bit of sweetness added in the mix. It had a tropical rainstorm type of vibe to it. This leaned more towards a masculine type of scent, but it was enjoyed by everyone in my household. The scent strength was a 4 out of 5 with the throw being 4.5.
Smoldering Campfire
The last candle I tested was my daughter’s favorite. Smoldering Campfire had a tannish brown coloring to the wax. I also kept the wick a little longer than usual on the first burn so I could get that full wax melt pool.

This candle smelled just like a bonfire out back. The smokiness was mellowed out by the sweet wood notes and I thought I got hints of vanilla during the burn. Maybe that was just me wanting S’mores, but this candle was fantastic. The scent strength and throw were 4 out of 5.
Overall Impression of Sunset Palm Candles

I thoroughly enjoyed all my candles that I tested from Sunset Palm Candles. The candles are high quality and well made with a variety of scent fragrances that should please most anyone. I will say that the candles do require a bit of a longer wick on the initial burn in order to get a nice, full wax melt pool – at least that was my experience. The candles are well fragranced and have really good scent throws. They are super, super slow burning candles, so you will definitely get several hours of enjoyment per candle. Overall, we would recommend Sunset Palm Candles and give them 4.5 out of 5 stars!
Their candles can be purchased on their website. It looks like they also attend local craft shows and have a company truck, so if you’re in the area it’s a great way to meet them and smell products in person. We love that they also offer an opportunity to sign up for a candle making class and they have fundraising options.
