When you burn & test as many different candle and candle brands as we do, it’s hard to keep the same level of excitement during the actual burning phase. That’s why we were thrilled to be able to test out some candles from a company named Spiral Light Candles…the magical 2-in-1 candles that spiral down when they burn. The candles are fragrant and fun, so we were all in to try them out!

A Closer Look at Spiral Light Candles

Spiral Light Candles was the birthchild of Aaron & Sara McWilliams, a husband wife duo with an ingenious idea. Aaron was able to patent the unique 2-in-1 candle and sold them from 2011 until the original candle store closed its doors in 2016. Enter the Todd & Tammi Nelson, then owners of The Afton Candle Company, who ventured to North Dakota in search of a larger wax melter. They ended up with not only the wax melter but also an entire candle company. Spiral Light Candles was born again! The Nelsons have lovingly put their own visions into the company and made the brand their own, with beautiful candle fragrances that continue to mesmerize.

What’s really great about these candles is that you get the “wow” effect from the spiral burning action and then are able to enjoy your candle even longer with the wood wick. We were able to eek out more fragrance use by using the end-of-life candle as wax melts.

With Spiral Light Candles you’re supporting a family and not just a business.

Products Offered

Spiral Light Candles offers their unique spiral design candles in three different sizes – small (3″ x 3″), medium (4″ x 4″) and large (4″ x 6″). They all come in a variety of fragrrances (almost 30 at the time of this review). They also carry a few candle accessories that can be used for displaying/using their candles. This company also offers gift certificates to their store.

White Tea & Ginger

Our White Tea & Ginger candle was the large size and it was pure white in color. Each candle came in its own box, with a cut out so you could catch a whiff of the fragrance itself. The candle itself is in a hollow pillar format with a white cotton wick on the sides that spirals down. In the center of the candle was a large wooden wick. Luckily the candle came with instructions, as I was about to light both wicks at once – yikes! The correct protocol was to light the cotton wick first and allow the candle to burn down in a circular fashion. It’s hard to explain without video, but it was truly fascinating. We will end up posting a video so you can view the burn action, but in the meantime, there is a video from The Candle Enthusiast at the bottom of the Spiral Light Candles webpage. The large candle has a stated 40+ hour burn time, and we got most of that time with the wooden wick. The spiral action lasted approximately 10 hours in total, with the cotton wick self-extinguishing. Once that was done, it was time to light the wood wick. We did have a bit of trouble initially lighting the wick (it wouldn’t stay lit), but once we did, we enjoyed the soft crackle pop we’ve come to expect with wood wick candles. The candle burned flawlessly for us and there was no noted black sooting. Perfection!
The scent description reads: White tea, elegantly coupled with rose, zesty oranges, sweet geraniums and cedar wood.

The candle scent was fantastic. It was a bit floral but not in an overpowering way. The tea notes helped ground the scent overall and there was a bit of a bite to the fragrance. We got a better scent throw when the cotton wick was burning. We still got a noticeble throw with the wood wick, but it was not as fragrant.

Sea Glass

We were absolutely in love with the Sea Glass candle, which we had in the medium size. The color was a beautiful beachy blue-green, and the scent was absolutely divine! It smelled fresh and clean, with hints of floral notes. It was absolutely mesmerizing. This was a fairly strongly scented candle and it put out a great scent throw without even being lit. Once lit, the candle easily scented up the space I was in. The fragrance floated throughout the air and on around the house. It was not overwhelming, but you could definitely tell when this candle was burning.
The scent description reads: White sands, sea spray and coastal grasses with a splash of citron and notes of geranium, rose, jasmine and mint. A strong scent.

I was pleasantly surprised at the fragrance from this candle – it was amazing! It burned just like my White Tea & Ginger candle from start to finish. No black soot, no messy cleanup. Candle perfection!

Rainforest

My Rainforest candle was also medium sized and a beautiful blue-green color. It smelled earthy with prominent notes of patchouli and fresh, green notes. It was not as strongly scented as my Sea Glass candle, but it was definitely fragrant. I did not get any of the citrus notes, but it was still a beautiful fragrance overall.
The scent description reads: Earthy and bold with green cypress, fir needles, sweet citrus and patchouli. The enchanting smell of an exotic rain forest.

This candle, like the others, burned quickly but cleanly with the cotton wick. The stage with the wooden wick was a nice way to extend the overall life of the candle. It was fragrant throughout, being more noticeable during the cotton wick burning stage.

Old Fashioned

We had a small Old Fashioned candle to test and it was really cute. Perfect for smaller spaces! The color was a deep brown and the scent was amazing. It had a predominant cherry note to it and was thick and rich. It did smell a lot like and old fashioned drink.
The scent description reads: An intoxicating blend of orange peel, gourmet maraschino cherries, aromatic bitters and, like we make them in Wisconsin, the finest brandy.

We loved this candle, much like the others. The fragrance was milder, but it still fragranced the space well that it was in. I would say the smaller pillar is definitely more suited to smaller spaces, such as a bathroom, unless you are using several at one time. The smaller candle really burned quickly, so that is also something to keep in mind when purchasing.

Overall Impression of Spiral Light Candles

4 flames rating

We were completely impressed with Spiral Light Candles. They were so incredibly fun to burn! The spiral effect using the cotton wick was truly amazing and something we had never experienced before. Once the cotton wick extinguishes, you’re left with a candle that you can enjoy a bit longer by burning the wood wick. I will say that the candles did burn down fairly quickly – much quicker for us than the stated burn time and the reason for 4 stars in this review. However, we got a lot of enjoyment from the candles and they were quite fragrant. In order to make the most use of our candles, we cut the end portions up and used them in our wax melters. Overall a truly enjoyable experience, making Spiral Lights one of our newest go-to candle companies.

Their candles can be purchased on their website.
