Introduction to my Yankee Candle Summer Scoop candle review:
It has been forever since I’ve purchased a Yankee Candle. I just haven’t been impressed or in the mood. Why? A few reasons…. I really don’t care for their wax, the candles I’ve tried in the past haven’t burned very well, were weakly scented, and their prices keep going up and up and up. Oops, was that more than a few?Yankee Candle is THE #1 company in America – hands down, and I know there are a lot of Yankee fans out there – I used to be one of them but I’m to the point where I need to be “wowed” now to keep coming back for more and I really haven’t been with this company for a long time.
With that said, what brought me back? I received a promotional email not long ago and saw they had a few 2 wick large tumbler style candles on sale. A $28.00 dollar candle for $13… that sealed the deal and I figured – what the heck! I dove in and bought two… Summer Scoop and Waikiki Melon. I’ve never tried this style candle from Yankee so I was pretty excited.
I love the look of this candle… they are tall and fairly narrow but what I loved and what sold me was that it has two wicks. I am definitely a “two wick” chick. I’ve always felt Yankee should put two wicks in their medium and large jar candles years ago… I know they’ll burn faster that way but I’d rather have a strong scent with a clean (no leftover wax) low maintenance burn than a candle that lasts longer. That’s just me. Both fragrances I purchased smelled AWESOME – I was so happy. So first up for review – Summer Scoop… a delightful strawberry ice cream scent.
What did my Summer Scoop tumbler candle from Yankee look like?
The candle itself is 22oz and in a large tumbler style glass jar. I don’t know how new this style jar is but I liked it a lot. The color of the wax is a creamy pink/rose with 2 perfectly placed wicks. The lid was a matte flat chrome lid with “Yankee Candle” embossed in the center and had embossed dots around the entire edge. Very nicely done. I must mention my thoughts on the wax… I could tell right away the wax in this candle was not their normal mottled paraffin wax. It was softer and creamier looking… like a mix between paraffin and soy you see in some brands. I liked!
There is a clear label on the face of the candle with the Yankee logo and a scrumptious picture of strawberry ice cream with an assortment of fresh berries on top of the ice cream. LOVED!!
What did my Summer Scoop candle from Yankee smell like?
Summer Scoop is a scent from Yankee’s “Fruit Fragrance” collection. So far with presentation and cold sniff, I was impressed. The wax was so creamy looking, it just looked more inviting to me. When I saw the picture on the label and then popped open the lid to smell it for the first time… I actually closed my eyes and smiled – breathing the scent in. It smelled SOOOOO good!!!!! I cannot tell you how excited I was to finally *BE* excited over a Yankee candle. Dare I say I’m back in the fold? Okay, I am!! When they have a sale on these tumblers again… I’m in!!
Summer Scoop really does smell like creamy strawberry ice cream. Nothing fake or artificial… just creamy strawberry vanilla goodness. To me, strawberry is a hard scent to nail… the ones I’ve tried in the past always smell either chemically or artificial. Strawberry blended with other scents are usually the same for me – artificial. This scent however was literally perfect. I noticed on the bottom of the label it said, “with pure, natural extracts.” Not sure what that entails but maybe those ingredients added to the realistic smell of this scent. Whatever it was, Yankee nailed it!
Scent description from Yankee Candle site:
“Delicious memories of creamy, homemade strawberry ice cream on a hot summer day. One scoop or two?”
I’ll take two please!!!! I loved this scent!!!! Based off cold sniff, I’m for sure going back for more. Smelling this candle, you literally want to take a spoon to it. It was very realistic. Like ice cold, creamy and freshly churned strawberry ice cream.
Now how was the this candle/scent lit? – – the wicks were thickly woven (good sign) and the flames once lit were a perfect consistency. I let my candle burn for a good while before checking back on it… when I did, I could smell this yummy creamy strawberry but it was very light… too light. I was pretty disappointed… you pop open the lid and smell this amazing strawberry scent but once lit, you can barely smell it. You really had to be right around the candle to catch the fragrance which tells me I had it in too big of a room- so I moved it to a smaller room where it performed a teeny bit better. Still very lightly scented. Here’s a positive though… it burned AWESOME!!!! No wick issues, complete melt pool, zero tunneling or wasted wax. THAT is what I’ve always wanted with Yankee candles. I just wish the scent would have been stronger.
How did my Summer Scoop candle burn?
As stated above, this candle burned perfect!! Excellent burn, no wick maintenance, full melt pool and zero wasted wax. A++ on the way this Yankee candle burned.
Overall opinion of my Summer Scoop candle from Yankee Candle:
What a dilemma. I loved this scent A LOT and loved the two wick candle but not sure I’ll buy this specific scent again based off the strength it put out, especially priced at $27.99. That’s pretty expensive. I did get this candle on sale for 50% off so I really can’t complain too much and I’m still glad I purchased it. I think next time if they have them in stock, I’ll get melts instead…. they’re generally always stronger.
I ended up going back to Yankee and purchasing more fragrances in this tumbler style jar as well as their medium classic jars. So, I’ll be reviewing all those at some point. We need more Yankee reviews and I’m hopeful these other ones put out a better scent throw… we’ll see.
Until then… Happy candle burning!!

I have sensitivity now to soy candles of Any manufacturer, I get a wheeze, dizzy, and headache sometimes just walking past store shelves. Yankee Candle’s paraffin wax and quality wicks are the one I actually can burn hours Very often! I’m a food-scent fan, Vanilla Lime is FABULOUS and Strong! VL stays strong in any size room, lit/unlit, version: I get great satisfaction from Vanilla Lime tea-lights in their clear small cups adaptable to a variety of holders sizes, and being sold in box of a dozen, they are the Only value the public can have confidently and consistantly as it’s so hard for many justifying bringing home even with Yankee’s sale ‘buy–get–‘ ex; $60 worth of candles even 4 large ones.?. My fav scents are= Vanilla Lime, Kitchen Spice, Chocolate Layer Cake, Strawberry Lemonade, Vanilla Cupcake, Summer Scoop(try in paraffin it may be stronger but is Great in the fragrance warmer-Wish alll these favs were in every version), Peach .., Red Raspberries, Meyer Lemon was great. Not too crazy when certain herbs are mixed to scents of foods so many holiday scents rather for-go. Pink Sands, Grass, and Mistletoe/Christmas Tree have been only nonfood alternatives burnable I didn’t mind. I hope for simple true spice ones I really do like without offputting mixes, why is there no Orange or Orange with Clove or Cinnamon ?? and is there a paraffin vanilla with Banana buttery cocoanuty deeper strong roasty mix? I had to quit using a soy version by Colonial/CC bought in a slender canister from BBB because soy smoked bad when snuffed but fabulous fragrance ! A bad complex herby floral or pretentious and perfume mockups are Terrible to have to live with/nauseating and not workable any version , roomsize, setting, I dig them out and save the container if baking soda deodorizes the glass jar if I’m gifted one. Yankee’s true simple flowers: Daffodill, is the one lighter one interesting, just hadn’t tried burning one yet. Thanks for time here.
I really liked this scent but zero fragrance. So disappointed.
