Introduction to my review of scented candles from Wickit Good Candle Co:

Ah, the power of suggestion!

Summer is here and it is time I get into the swing of things by changing my candle décor.  Out with the heavy scents, out with the grubbies! It is time to bring in the seashell votive holders, and the beachy and tropical scents. I flip over to melting tarts instead of burning candles because they just seem “too hot” for the weather.  However, it appears that I can be tricked into being a summer time burner – it just takes some creative forces.

Wickit Good Candle Co are a great summer segue – their labels immediately make me think about  a roaring ocean surf and seaside breezes! The labels are drawings, done in oceanic colors, of an ethereal mermaid, her hair waving in the breeze.

The web site is nicely organized and makes it easy to see scenting options – there are a couple of ways to access the fragrance, both in the center of the screen and the menu on the left.  Super! I hate having to hunt around for scent descriptions

The tag line for Wickit Good Candle Co is “No Soot. No Soy. Just Perfect”. They have “created a formula of different waxes including beeswax, which burns clean, is chemical free, and emits a pure, unadulterated fragrance”. There are no color stabilizers, so be aware that light can change the wax color.

How do my candles and tarts look?Wickit Good Candle Co scented candle review

All my candles are in the sleek, clear cylinder jars.  They have glass tops with the mermaid label on top.  The scent name is on a small sticker on the side of the candle, very discreet. They are double wicked!

The colors work perfectly with the labels on the top of the candles: Long Beach Island is soft blue, Sea Glass is turquoise,  Mermaid is a light seafoam green, and Tuscan Garden is light avocado green.

The tarts are the standard “flower” shaped tart.   One fun thing is that my candles and tarts came with a book of matches with  the mermaid logo.

How do the candles and tarts from Wickit Good Candle Co smell?

Long Beach Island

“The most popular of our “To the Beach” Collection of Candles. Almost as good as a vacation!”
Long Beach Island from Wickit Good Candle Co

As a best seller,  I knew this was going to be a great scent, but my mind could not help but wander… what would an island smell like?  Marshy wet grass?  Do I really want to know?   If they make candles that smell like bacon and dill pickles, why not another “reality” smelling candle? Maybe that is a question best left unanswered!

No worries, of course – this scent is nice, it is a crisp ocean/rain fragrance and my nose found  a mild mint chaser. This is a scent I would expect in a spa. It scented the testing room softly. The tart, used with a tealight melter, has a medium throw.  Its scent is the same, and I really noticed the minty finish when the tart first started melting, not so noticeable later.  The scenting lasted for about 6 hours.

Sea Glass

Sea Glass scented candle review from Wickit Good Candle Co“A Unique and Strong Essence of Pomegranate, Honey Dew, Watermelon, and Mango.”

Cold sniff on this candle is very mild, as is often the case with paraffin. Since the wax is harder, it seems to lock in the scent – and it stays locked in until a good scent pool forms, so be patient, you will be rewarded! The throw is strong enough for scenting a room 12 x 12.

My tart was melted with a 24w electric melter.  The throw is impressive!  It easily scented a room that was 16x 16.  This is a happy scent, sweet and summery.  I can smell the melons, and although I do not pick out the other fruits, the blend is more sweet and complex than just melon, and it is much more interesting, too.  Now wonder it is a best seller!

“Perfect blend of Basil with a touch of Fresh Herbs.”

I love it!  This is the herbal/green type scent that is at the top of my favorite list. It has a little basil edge – but just a little… so it does not smell like a pizzaria in the testing room, thankfully! The candle is surprisingly strong, it had no trouble scenting the testing room, and I loved that blast of herbal scent when I opened the door.  But, let me tell ya – this tart packs a punch!  It was sooo  strong, it began seeping out the cracks in the door! It also easily lasted through two tea lights.

“A Seductive and Unique Blend of Sweetness and Musk, laced with the Pure Essence of Plumeria Flower.”

This is really  a unique blend – it smells sugary sweet on the cold sniff, but as it heats, I smell more of the plumeria – which always has a little citrus edge to my nose.  In fact, after burning this for awhile, the scent I remembered was a “make your own” custom fragrance oil that you could concoct in the mall, in one of the bath and body shops that has sadly disappeared. The scent was called Citrus Musk. It was fabulous.

This scent actually got the husband seal of approval – not an easy accomplishment in this household!  This candle had the lightest throw of all the scents. The tart was stronger, but was still the lightest of the four.

How do my candles and tarts from Wickit Good Candle Co. perform?

The tarts, being a hard form of wax, take a little longer to melt and require enough heat – I used tealights and 24 w electric melters.  The tarts are nice and strong, and when they are out of fragrance, you know it!  Smell for dwindling scent and then swap out – unless you like the smell of hot wax. These harden and pop out easily when frozen or iced if you do not like to dump hot wax.Overall, the candles burn very nicely!  I had four candles, all the same size, double wicked, and 3 were super stars – no soot and a fairlyHow did my candles and melts perform? even burn (just an occasional nudge of the wick was all I needed to keep the big melt pool.)

One of the candles was a bit of a stinker – I am not sure if it was a wick that was problematic, or if I gave it too much of a trim. (The candles come with a card warning you to trim to ¼ inch, lest you have dysfunctional burning!). Sometimes I trim, and like those bangs in the 6th grade, I get a little carried away… and… well… time is all that can fix things. It was only one wick of the two that was being difficult – so I let the “good” one get the wax pool going and then removed a small amount of wax and the 2nd wick did better.  It was still a little lazy, and there was some wax left on the side of the jar.  Having said that, I need to point out that the other 3 did great. I figured out to get the best burn, leave the wick alone at first, then trim as needed after burning.

These candles look like they are going to tunnel as that paraffin begins to melt, but go do something else and leave the candle alone.  After a couple hours of burning, that tunnel effect levels out and all is good!

Final Thoughts on Wickit Good Candles:

This review was a good reminder for me: Many candles do best when you leave them alone, get a big melt pool and do not mess around with the wax. Boy, it is hard to do that when you think you can “help” things along! Especially if you sort of like to play with the warmClosing to my review gooshy wax.  However, the lesson learned: step away from the candle!

Their appealing logo makes it an especially nice summertime candle!   All of the scents were complex fragrances that I not only enjoyed, but I would burn again.

Wickit Good has a great selection of candles. They also have fragrance oils, soaps and a “must have” item – wax remover! Head on over and check out their site –  all orders ship for the flat rate of $8.95!

Happy candle shopping!
