In the winter months, I find myself gravitating towards warm, cozy fragrances and spicy scented candles certainly fit that bill. While I enjoy these types of fragrances all year round, it’s something about the wintertime that makes me welcome them even more. When I learned about Paint It Black from Evoke Candle Company, I knew that was one I had to try while roasting marshmallows by the fire. Evoke is a luxury candle brand with a limited selection of gorgeous candles revolving around musical themes. Paint It Black was a Rolling Stones hit, so I was curious to know if this candle would be a hit in our home.
Packaging/Presentation
Luxury candles are oh-so-special for sooooo many reasons. Not only in the way that they fragrance your home, but in the way they make you feel. This candle made me feel like I was unwrapping the most luxurious present from the moment it hit my hot little hands. The box was gorgeous and the candle was carefully wrapped, including some decorative tissue paper. You could tell a lot of care went into packaging, which is pretty impressive. The beauty of the candle itself was something to behold – a heavy, black vessel with the scent and company name also in black. The wax was black, as was the tip of the candle wick – cool! This was a 13.5oz candle and it had a good weight to it. I could tell the vessel would be one that I would want to keep after all the wax was gone.
Authenticity
I could smell the candle’s warm aromas as soon as I started unwrapping it. One quick cold sniff immediately wrapped me in a blanket of cozy. I could smell the clove distinctly and some warm, woodsy notes. Looking at the scent description:

Yep – we were definitely off to a great start! I decided to light this candle in a small guest room due to its smaller size. I busied myself in that room putting up Christmas decorations when it started to hit me…that warm, spicy aroma coming from the candle. Swoon! Clove has this disctinct aroma that is both spicy and a little sweet, and this is what I initially caught. There were some grounding warm, woodsy notes that beefed up the scent profile and made me immediately start yearning for hot cocoa.
Scent Strength & Scent Throw
The scent of clove can be overpowering, but I think the addition of the woodsy notes (cedar?) made it much more balanced and for a great spicy scented candle. The more the candle burned, it seemed I smelled more of the gift of cardamom, with fresh, green notes. It was such a beautiful blend that was perfect for this time of year.
Despite being a spicy scented candle, this candle was not overbearing at all. It provided a moderately strong scent that I could smell all throughout the room it was in. When I opened the door, I could smell the scent start to creep down the hallway. Perfect!
Burn Performance
I lit this candle and had a full wax melt pool in just over 30 minutes. I never had to fuss with the wick – I kept it neatly trimmed between burns and that was it. I didn’t have any wasted wax on the sides of the jar, which is fantastic because I plan on repurposing this beautiful candle vessel. I never saw any black sooting – just a nice, clean burn from start to finish.
This was a slow burning candle, for sure. I would guesstimate that I got about 70 hours of burn out of this candle, which was a little less than the stated burn time on the website. Still, 70 hours is great for this size candle, so no worries on this end.
Conclusion
I was overjoyed with this introduction to Evoke Candle Company. This spicy scented candle fit the bill for the winter blues without being harsh or overbearing. It is definitely a complex scent and one I would repurchase again & again & again. Given the sheer beauty, the clever rock & roll connection, and the scent complexity, this is one of my top notch recommendations this year. If you’re looking for something a little different, a little luxurious, and a little bit rock-n-roll, you can’t go wrong with this candle.
