Serengeti Grasslands Pier 1 Imports Scented Candle
By Christina Rylan
Brand: Pier 1 Imports
Type: 9.75oz candle
Fragrance: Serengeti Grasslands
Scent Strength: Mega strong
First impression of Serengeti Grasslands:
Serengeti Grasslands was an impulse buy for me. I purchased it because it’s part of the their medallion series and my goal is to review every candle in this line from Pier 1, even if I don’t care for the fragrance itself.
First impression… this candle smelled like exotic flowers and honey, and super headache inducing strong.
Here is the scent description from Pier 1’s website:
Evoking the simple beauty of endless plains and sweeping sunsets, this transparent fragrance combines notes of cyclamen, violet, sweet phlox and Shasta daisy with the essence of dandelion, fresh grass and honey.
Yep, that’s exactly what this candle smelled like… wild flowers and honey. Eeek!!! I also knew right off the bat this would NOT be a husband approved scent.
Time to put that to the test.
Because the wax seemed so strong, I decided to test this candle out in my master bedroom. May as well go all out on the experience, even if it killed me. Once lit, it took roughly 10 minutes before I started noticing the aroma and once I did… UGH! Total perfume and honey engulfed my bedroom. It was so strong, it was hard to handle. I didn’t put it out though, even though I wanted to. I endured and waited till my hubby got home so I could gauge his reaction – and sure enough as predicted… he did not like it. (Insert laughter) I checked my watch and within 5 minutes of walking through the door, he came out of our bedroom and gave me a painful look and asked, “Please tell me you’re almost finished burning that candle?” And I was. I put it out immediately and in the outside trash it went.
I don’t know folks… this scent was too weird, and strong – and offensive to my nose. Flowers and honey just didn’t jive with me. It smelled pungent and way too strong.
Strength – on a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate this candle a 30 in a small room. 10 in a medium room and 8 in a large room. Very strong candle.
How did my candle burn?
This candle burned fine. I didn’t burn it to the end but it did reach a full melt pool pretty easily so I’m guessing it would have given an even and completely burn to the end.
Closing to my review:
As you can guess, I did not care for Serengeti Grasslands and neither did my husband. At all. But, that’s a total personal opinion. Don’t let that stop you from trying this candle… should you go into a Pier 1 and see one, smell it for yourself. If you love perfume and floral scents, you may like this it. I think it was the honey component that ruined it for me. It just didn’t blend well with flowers. Sorry Pier 1. 🙁
Happy candle hunting!

Presentation: 4/5
Authenticity: 5/5
Burn Performance: 4/5
Strength: 5/5
Overall Rating: 4.5/5
So as you can see, this candle still rated high even though I immensely disliked the scent because I tend to leave personal preference out of rating a candle. Presentation was great, the candle was gorgeous as ever… the scent matched the description so it was authentic, it burned fine and the strength was super strong. 4.5 stars.
