Zionsville Candle Company

I feel bad giving this company an 8, even though that isn't really a bad rating. The website had a very hometown feel to me, and when I emailed the owner about scent descriptions, he replied very quickly and courteously. The only reason I'm giving these candles an 8 is because I thought 2 of the 4 scents I tried seemed a bit perfumy, and those same 2 candles had left over wax in the tins from the wick burning out before a good amount of the wax was gone. I tried Hawaii and Sunday Morning Hotcakes in the roly poly size (4oz), Bushel of Berries in a 4oz tin, Eve's Tempting Apple in an 8oz tin, and was sent a free 16oz candle that was also in the scent Eve's Tempting Apple. None of the wicks from any of my candles bloomed, but rather turned under as they burned. My Hawaii and Sunday Morning Hotcakes(SMH)roly polys arrived in little glass containers that look different from the picture on the website. These containers were much more rounded and not straight up and down as it looks like in the picture. Because of these containers, I feel like I received more wax, as I was expecting more of a straight up and down votive size. Both glasses had the name of the company imprinted on the side. There aren't any really detailed scent descriptions on the website. While I did email the owner about the description of some scents, I'm afraid I ordered scents I didn't ask him about! I would describe Hawaii as a bit like coconut suntan lotion. The wax, as you can probably guess, was white. If you like coconut scents, you would like this candle. I burned it in my small bathroom with the door closed and the scent strength was very good. The other roly poly I burned was in the scent Sunday Morning Hotcakes(SMH). The color of the wax was a shade of orange that looked like the color of pancakes:-). This scent was SUPER YUMMY and really smelled like blueberry pancakes. I burned this candle in my larger half bath/laundry room with the door closed. Like the other roly poly, the scent strength was very good and I loved walking into my laundry room. At first I thought both roly polys would tunnel because one side of each roly poly had a lot of wax that wasn't burning at the same rate as the other side. After a few burns, though, the wax melted in both and each burned evenly the rest of the time. I tried the scent Bushel of Berries in a 4oz tin. The wax was a blueberry blue and the tin itself was a plain silver except for the company name imprinted on the side of the tin. I burned this candle in my office and the scent strength and throw were both very good. As for the fragrance, I've never really burned many blueberry scents...at least blueberry is the only scent I could pick up in Bushel of Berries. I thought it smelled a little perfumy, but since I haven't had experience with what I would consider a blueberry candle, that could just be me. If you like blueberries, this candle may be worth giving a try. As for the burn, for some reason, despite burning this candle to the edges, the wax around the edges seemed to cool even while the wick was burning. Eventually the wick burned out, and a good bit of wax was left. I warmed the tin on a warmer, and again the throw and strength were very good, but I won't buy this fragrance in a tin again. The last scent is Eve's Tempting Apple in an 8oz and 16oz tin. The color of the wax was reddish-pink. I think this scent was supposed to smell a little like apple cinnamon. I do have lots of experience with apple candles, and I thought this scent was a little perfumy, too. It wasn't unpleasant, however, so some of you may really enjoy the fragrance. My 8oz. tin had only one wick and was plain except for a large round label on the lid of the tin that had the name of the candle and a picture of a hand holding an apple. This tin burned just like Bushel of Berries, with the wax cooling around the edges even while the wick was burning and the wick dying out. Again, a great deal of wax was left, but I wasn't overly impressed with the scent, so I probably won't warm it on a warmer. The 16oz tin was double-wicked and had the same round label with the picture on the top of the lid, along with a label encircling the tin that had the name of the scent, the same picture of a hand holding an apple, the size of the candle, and the price. I liked the look of the label, especially as tins don't usually have a lot of decoration. But if this candle was given as a gift, I might consider taking the label off or trying to find some creative way of blocking out the price. Because it was double-wicked, the candle burned very evenly and used as much wax as possible. I was much more pleased with the burn of this candle. None of the candles that I burned smoked; they were very clean. The owner mentioned that he doesn't double-wick the candles based on the size of the candle, but rather on the scent. One unique aspect of this company is that, while they don't have scent descriptions, on the website there is a story about how each candle scent came to be. This story is sent along with the candles you order on a plastic Wick Certificate that is the size of a credit card. On the back of the card is a Tip Table that tells you how much to tip based on the price of your dinner and tipping either 15% or 20%. However, these stories really don't describe many of the scents. I'm glad I tried 4 different scents. While I probably wouldn't purchase Eve's Tempting Apple or Bushel of Berries again, they weren't bad scents and some of you may really like them. Hawaii was a good scent, and if you like the smell of blueberry pancakes, I'd definitely recommend Sunday Morning Hotcakes! It was my favorite out of the bunch and it really smelled good enough to eat. Happy Candle Hunting from Jen the Candle Hunter :-)
