Fox Hill Candle Co.

"No frills, just good scents."

Fox Hill Candle Co. is, at this time, just an online candle company, but it just so happens that I live about 30 minutes away from the candlemaker! I thought it was really neat that I could actually meet the woman who made my candles. I picked up my candles at a local craft fair, and the candlemaker seemed to be a very bubbly, friendly person. The first thing that caught my attention about this website was that the tarts were only 50 cents each! What a deal for trying out a bunch of scents! And try them out I did:-). My review is of the scents Amish Harvest, Raspberry, Apple Cranberry Twist, Rosemary Mint, and Vanilla Lace. The tarts are a bit smaller than what I would consider the size of an average tart to be. But I think the size is appropriate considering the low cost of the tarts. There is no scent description link on the website, just a scent list, so try to bare with me as I do my best to describe a few of these scents:). Amish Harvest: I thought Amish Harvest would be spicy...something reminiscent of fall and the scents that we naturally associate with that season. I was a bit surprised that after I warmed it, I could pick out no distinctive scents at all. Maybe it is supposed to smell like dough, because the only scent that I can think of that even comes close would be play dough. I warmed the tart in my medium sized bathroom and the scent carried well. If you like the scent of dough, then this fragrance is for you. Raspberry: I warmed Raspberry in my living room, which is open and attached to my open kitchen. It is a pleasant fragrance and doesn’t smell fake or perfumy. The scent carried well despite the two open rooms, but it was not an “in your face” strength. The scent may have been stronger had it been burned in a less open space, but you could smell the fragrance regardless. I have never burned a Raspberry scent by itself before, so in comparison, this Raspberry fragrance smells similar to PartyLite’s Raspberry and Thyme scent, although you can tell there is a difference (no thyme). Apple Cranberry Twist: I thought this scent sounded like it would be yummy and tart. Maybe it was just me (and my husband, I asked him if he could smell anything in case it was just me), but I couldn’t smell any fragrance at all when this tart was warmed. I even stood right next to the warmer, but could smell nothing until I nearly stuck my nose in the wax. When I did that, it did smell yummy. Because all the tarts were so small, I almost wonder if 2 tarts from Fox Hill would be a good idea to get the most fragrance and throw from the tarts. Rosemary Mint: The last scent I sampled was Rosemary Mint. Unlike Amish Harvest and Apple Cranberry Twist, this scent carried well in my open living room. It was, again, not an “in your face” fragrance, but you could definitely tell that it was in the air. The scent was very relaxing, refreshing, and it gives me the feeling a very renewing, cleansing scent for spring:-). With my purchase I also received a free, 4 oz. jar candle in Vanilla Lace. I didn’t notice it in the current scent list, but I think when I received my order that the scent was fairly new. I’m sure you could email the owner to request this scent if it sounds like something you would be interested in. Vanilla Lace is a delicious and peaceful scent. I would describe it as perhaps vanilla and powder. I burned the 4 oz. in my small bathroom, and would only recommend burning this size candle in a bathroom or very small room since it is such a small candle. My 4 oz. candle burned cleanly and evenly. Fox Hill carries jars in the following sizes: 4oz, 8oz, 12oz, 16oz, 20oz, and crock candles. From this order, I would recommend trying the lovely fragrances of Rosemary Mint and Vanilla Lace in a jar candle, or perhaps with two or more tarts. I don’t want to give up on the other tarts all together. Again, they are a bit small, so I would suggest purchasing 2 or 3 tarts at a time if you are going to give a fragrance a try. They are super cheap, so you really wouldn’t be loosing much money to buy a few at a time. Hope to read some other reviews soon. Happy hunting!:-)
