WoodWick Candles...

Wood Wick candles are now part of the Yankee Candle line. Same fragrances and quality. (Hopefully)

I just had to try these after reading everyone's reviews. I have had a little different experience than some of you. I really like these candles. The ones I have tried have been good ones. My most recent purchase included a wood wicked Vanilla candle which I have burning right now and it smells great! I also have Buttercream Frosting, a Triple Layered Fruit candle and some of their tarts. I am liking them very much. ******ADDITIONAL INFO****** They burn much better when using a candle S'topper on them! It really works. I use S'toppers and all my candles I burn anymore. UPDATE******** I just today (6-11-06) got to try a melt of their new scent APPLE VANILLA...OH MY it is WONDERFUL! I will have to get more! I have a wood wick candle I love of theirs also, it is Vanilla and is Great also!

I can't tell with the other candles they make, but Old Virginia hit the jackpot with their woodwicks. I honestly thought it might be a lot of hype, but after smelling their wonderful scents (nice complex scents and not artificial or overly sweet aromas) I decided to give it a try. I purchased the large Fireside because the name just tickled me and the scent was a nice spice...a little on the masculine side but not so much that I was reminded of men's perfume. It just lacks a sweetness, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I was a little excited when I got it home and lit it as soon as I settled in for the evening. What a wonder to have in a non-fireplace abode. The wick lights up higher than cotton wicks, so the light it casts is fairly bright. The sound is very light...a fast, steady, and soft sputtering with a few tiny pops now and then. My favorite part is how the light dances on the walls. Because the flame is so high and sputters, it casts light and shadows on the floor and walls just like a real fireplace would. Fantastic! I just bought a bottle of wine, a new Jazz CD, and now this candle will make the moment complete. At around 25 dollars with tax, it does cost a bit more than some, but I think it's worth it and would not only recommend to others but will definitely be buying again. And the cost isn't as bad as it seems once you break it down. The large candle is supposed to last around 180 hours. Burning three hours a day everyday...that gives you about two months use. I already have a wishlist of scents brewing: applewood, chai spice, lemon sage...

I love their Woodwick candles. Worth every penny even though they can be expensive but I have found several close to home that were priced right. You just have to look. They also offer sales on their site. Love these candles.

I first tried Old Virginia candles last year & have been addicted since. My favorites are: Buttercream Frosting - a nice, sweet and buttery scent that is round & just right; Sugar Cookies - not too sweet, this one really has a nice spice to it; and, Hot Cinnamon Rolls - sweet, warm, spicy and really true to the scent ... love this one. You can get a lot of these scents in their Triple Fragrance Collection. These candles have three layers, so you can try more than one scent at a time. Old Virginia's wax melts are also a great way to test their scents. The throw is unbelievable - and they last for a good amount of time. I highly recommend these candles to anyone who loves soy candles like me! In addition to the bakery-style scents (to which I'm completely addicted), they also offer various floral, clean & fruity scents. And on the website, if you spend $30 or more, shipping is free. Worth a try!

I had never tried Old Virgina before, but a friend was raving about the Wood Wicks....so I caved. I bought a Wood Wick (22 oz) in Amaretto Latte and some melts. The Wood Wick is beautiful. Pretty jar, a wooden lid and nice color. When lit is has the sound of a crackling fire which is soothing. My candle has a nice scent strength and good throw. I am pretty much in love with it. The melts are great. Good throw, true scents and good scent strength too. My order was well packed and shipped quickly. The only thing I would change is that they use UPS to ship. I don't much like UPS, but it was ok. I would say this is a good place to try some neat things!

Wood Wick line from Old Virginia Candle Company Type: 11.5 oz trumpet jar Wax Type: I called Old Virginia’s customer service to ask, since it wasn’t specifically listed on their website. They said their Wood Wick candles are made mostly of paraffin, with a soy blend added. Burn Time: 11.5 oz up to 100 hours (as stated on website) Scent Strength: Applewood: Medium to High, Caramel: Very High You know the Crocodile Hunter on TV? Well, I’m no croc hunter, but I did recently go out on a hunt…..at my local mall for soy or natural wax candles;) (for me, this would be veg, palm, or beeswax). As I expected, I didn’t have much luck finding soy candles, but I did stumble upon an interesting candle find. Old Virginia Candle Co. recently released a new line of candles called WoodWick. The concept is fascinating and the result is very fun:). After browsing the label and reading about what they DO, I knew I had to take one home to give it a try. My trumpet jar looks very sleek, sophisticated, and simply classic. The lid is a flat, dark wood that has two silver W’s on the top and just sits atop the candle. If you would turn the candle upside down, the lid would fall right off (don’t lift by the lid!). The label on the side of the candle is not large. It is a simple rectangle and seems to be made of some sort of rubber. The lady cashier at the store where I bought the candle said the label can be easily removed it you want to use the jar once you are finished burning the candle. Before I talk about the scents, I have to fill you in on the WoodWick concept if you have never heard of it before. If you turn the wooden lid over, it explains that when you light the wood wick, it sounds like a crackling fire! How cool is that?! You can let the candle burn for 3-6 hours, and to trim the wick you simply pinch off the burnt wood with your fingertips so the wood wick remains at 1/8”. Originally I just purchased one WoodWick candle. The first sent I tried was Applewood. Old Virginia’s website describes this scent as “Complex notes of tart green apple and slightly spicy cinnamon bark make this a unique favorite.” I’d say that is a very good description. The scent of the cold wax was not super strong, but smelled very pleasant. Once I lit the wick, it took probably about an hour before I got the best scent throw. When lit, the scent smells like the perfect combination of apple and a scented wood, very much like its description. The scent carries well and you can definitely smell it when you enter a room. I burnt this in my living room/kitchen, which is very open since the two rooms are attached. The scent is not overpowering, however, and is very soothing and comforting. The wick performed just as it said it would. When I turned all the noise-making gadgets in my house off, I sat on my couch and enjoyed the soft, crackling fire sound my candle made. The experience was so relaxing, and I loved inhaling the touch of wood fragrance as I looked and listened to my candle. I don’t have a fire place, so this is the next best thing:). There are two reasons why I went back to the store and bought a Caramel WoodWick. The first is that although my Applewood candle had on the previous day been burning continuously for 6 hours, the wax wasn’t completely coming off the side of the jar. I wanted to buy another WoodWick candle to make sure that for whatever reason it just wasn’t my Applewood candle. The second reason is that when I had smelled the caramel fragrance in the store, the same day that I bought Applewood, I just opened the lid and the scent of the caramel was so strong! I’m a sucker for any yummy, edible scent, but I wanted to try something different. The Old Virginia Candle Co. website describes it as, “This delicious treat combines the uniquely flavorful notes of caramel and brown sugar with a hint of rich vanilla cream.” As you can see, I was looking for a good excuse to go back and buy that Caramel candle:). When the Caramel candle is lit, it is a very rich and very strong caramel scent. My ENTIRE apartment filled with the scent, and I don’t have what I would consider to be a small apartment. This scent traveled to and permeated what seemed to be every nook and cranny. I had candles burning in both my bathrooms and the caramel scent even somewhat covered those fragrances! You know when you are eating a rich dessert and you just can’t finish it all because it is so rich? The smell was almost that overwhelming, but I don’t care…it is that good. If you are a caramel lover, you must try this candle:)! Both of my candles, after burning for at least 4 hours, many times more, had leftover wax on the side of their jars. I didn’t find this visually appealing, but the sound of the wood burning is just so unique, I think I may buy these candles in the future just for the sound they make! I do want to note that the majority of this wax is not soy, and my allergies let me know it. However, when I burned Applewood in a more open space, I didn’t notice my allergies acting up as much as when I had it in my smaller office. The caramel scent was just so powerful, I may have gotten my slight headache just from the sheer strength of the fragrance, and when that candle is burning anywhere in my apartment, there is no way to hide from that smell:). But even with my occasional watery eyes or stuffy nose, I found these candles to be very relaxing and I will continue to light them on occasion so I can return to my soothing “fireplace” experience once again. **************************** Update: I wouldn't usually update this soon, but unfortunately I already know that I will either have to sell of give away my Caramel candle. It has been extinguished for about 5 hours or more and I can still smell caramel everywhere. This wouldn't usually be a problem, except my head is pounding and my nose is running. If you are allergic to paraffin (and I knew I was so it's my own fault), this scent may be a bit much. I woke up at 5am smelling the caramel and I had to get up, take some headache medicine, and light a strong orange candle to try to get rid of the smell. If paraffin and very strong scents don't bother you, this is a fabulous candle! I'm going to miss my Caramel Candle, but I guess I hunted one candle that I couldn't handle:).

Wow, what can I say: the Wood Wick candles are awesome! I recieved one of the large caramel candles for my birthday last month and have been enjoying it ever since. Now caramel isn't a scent I'd probably pick for myself, but this one smells great and kind of maple-y to me. The crackling wood wick is pretty cool and the scent throw on this one is amazing! Makes my whole apartment smell great. I can often smell this candle when I get home even though it hasn't burned since the day before! I was so impressed with it, I just had to go get another candle in a different scent. I went to a Hallmark store and purchased the smaller version in the pomander scent which kind of reminds me of a spiced tea. While the throw wasn't quite as strong as the caramel one, it was definitely good and more my kind of scent. The problem came after burning the candle a little more than half-way down. The wick appeared to be too short, which resulted in the flame being drowned, which resulted in tunneling. Now this candle is useless while it should have several more hours of burning time left. For the price I paid, I am not happy about this. The instructions on the bottom of the lid recommend trimming the wood wick, but I did not do that at all with either candle. The larger caramel candle has burned beautifully. I am more than half way through that one and it's burned evenly. I'd hate to think about how fast the smaller one would have resulted in this problem had I trimmed the wick. I don't know if it was just a problem with this particular candle or a problem with the smaller sizes in general. Otherwise, I can't recommend Wood Wick highly enough and will continue to buy them, but I will only buy the large one from now on.

I have been buying from Old Virginia Candles for over a year. I usually buy their monthly special with the topper as it is very nicely priced around $20. I really enjoy their special Halloween candle and that should be coming soon. I have given the Charm candles as gifts and they are always well received. My favorite so far would be the lily scented, I am not a big fan of floral scents, but this had a great scent throw. ******************************************** 15APR06 I kind of stopped buying from OVC after finding candlefind.com. Just so many other places!! :) Recently I read the review about the woodwick in caramel and wanted to give it a try. I received mine today and it is a great candle. I ordered the largest size (maybe 22oz) in Caramel and the throw came right away and filled my whole downstairs!! I also purchased a Sangria Woodwick-will have to let you know about the scent throw, but so far I would definately purchase the Caramel one again!! If you love caramel and would like to try a woodwick-give this scent a try!!! *********19APR06 Sangria woodwick has a much lighter throw than caramel-so my suggestion is to stick with caramel so far. Of course since I am a candle fanatic-I ordered a Blackberry and Vanilla Bean woodwick-will let you guys know about the throws on these!!!:)

I am burning a 60 hour triple layer candle in my small bathroom that has, as the top layer, Ruby Red Grapefruit, and it is one of the most authentic grapefruit smells of any I have ever tried. The other layers, not reached yet, are Pineapple Ginger and Berry Lime. The 3 colors of the candle, pale pastels in pink, lemony yellow and softest nile green make it a very pretty candle to look at as well. The candle has left a wax residue around the top of the jar, as I find most Old Virginia candles do (why, oh why won't they try 2 wicks?) but this candle has burned evenly in the middle, no soot or black stuff whatsoever and has kept a strong scent throw throughout its burning.

This review is for a couple of WoodWicks. I'm not familiar with any other products from this company. WoodWicks are very attractive, with the hourglass shape, substantial weight, peel off label, and pretty wooden lid. And I really love the sound of the crackling wicks, an added bonus to an already lovely candle. I bought two of the 10 oz. candles for 20% off. The price was under $15, which was well worth it, in my opinion. The first scent was Linen. I thought I was buying Vanilla Bean but the store had them sorted by color and I didn't check the label on the bottom. I'm not real crazy about laundry scents so this was a disappointment. I imagine if you like that type scent, this one would be a good one, but I really don't know. Sorry I can't be more helpful! The other scent I purchased was Cider. This one was wonderful - authentic hot apple cider in a mug, with the perfect amount of tartness and warm spiciness. I loved it! Both candles burned evenly, beautifully and not too hot. A complete pool of melted wax happened every time with not a bit of help from me. Trimming the wood wick was so simple it was nearly a non-issue. The wax is a proprietary blend of soy. That's all I was able to find out. There was absolutely zero soot. All in all, maintenance on these candles is almost nothing. I'm definitely planning to buy more of these in the future. Cider again, maybe something completely new, and hopefully the elusive Vanilla Bean!

I purchased several votives, single scents, triplets and soy. I couldn't smell any of the soy candles when burned. I did enjoy the green tea scent, which might be a bit strong for some. When I reordered, I purchased a Triple Fragrance jar candle in Coffee (Hazelnut, Irish Cream and Swiss Mocha), and the Herbal Delights (Mandarin sage, Cucumber lavender, and Citrus Mint). I am still on the first layer of scent in each candle, and both smell great, and burn well. I guess we'll see what happens when they burn down to the next layer.

I have purchased from their Triple Fragrance line both jars and votives. I am more impressed with their jars because they burn a lot better. Both smell equally as good, though you do get a better throw from the jars because there is a larger wax pool. This past year I've tried their jar versions of Patriot (Apple Pie, Vanilla and Blueberry) and Ice Cream (Strawberry, Orange, and Peach). They both tunneled a lot but had a great scent throw. I liked the idea of three scents in one candle, but you cannot smell much of the two lower scents. I also didn't like the way the stripes looked in my house. Not elegant at all! The prices are good for the sizes of the jars. The jar shape is also nice. While I love the scents of Old Virginia Candle, I am not crazy about their votives for two reasons: 1 - the price for their votives is high and 2 - I've had problems with the wick burning itself out long before the wax is gone. For the price that they charge for a votive, the wicks could be better quality. Old Virginia Candle is an ok company but there are much better ones out there.

I have ordered many candles from Old Virginia and have, overall, been satisfied with them. Their melts, votives and jar candles are all made with good quality wax but don't always have the strongest scent throws. However, there are some noticeable favorites: Babbling brook - very clean, fresh strong scent MacIntosh - very crisp, apple smell Cinnamon Oblivion - favorite! Sugar Cookies - soft but my best friend's favorite Generally, I like all of their scents but don't always notice them once they are burning. I have also bought electric tart warmers from them and a jar/tart warmer combo that is terrific! Overall, a good company with fast orders, free shipping over $30.00, some monthly specials - it's worth a try!

The other day I was in a candle store that sold primarily Yankee and a smaller selection of this brand. I was so excited to see them because I recognized the name from this web site. As a general statement I can say that some of the scents were good and some did not impress me. They all seem as though they would have a very strong scent throw. However, I was not impressed enough to buy any even though they were reasonably priced. ***********UPDATE 1/18/06**************** They have a new line of candles called "Wood Wicks". What makes them different from any other candle is the "wooden" wicks. They make a crackling noise like a wood fire but on a much smaller noise scale. Very cool, I thought. Again, some of the scents I liked and some were not so great. The one I ended up purchasing is Caramel. It is so strong cold that I don't light it very often. I really like this specific candle. I would give this candle a 10 but I'm sorry I can't do that for the entire candle line. I would recommend not buying these candles online. You would be better off trying each one individually, in person, to see if the scent is appealing to you.

I am a candle lover, I burn them every day. I was so happy to find Old Virginia candles because I like the idea of soy wax. The farm grown single scent candles are the best candles I have ever burned- very strong scent and clean, even burn. LOVE the hot apple pie. I did not however like the charmed candles for one reason, the jar is wider at the top so it did not melt all the way to the edges of the jar, smelled great burned unevenly. I will only buy farm grown candles

I have tried a few of these candles from QVC . They are a hit or miss for me... I have bought some that were fantastic and smelled up the room great and others smelled like playdough . I guess it depends on the scent...For the most part I will continue to buy them cause they have some good scent, One of my new favorites Apple Vanilla , great scent ! ...But i've found a new favorite co. I will be sticking to, but will still buy these if i find good interesting scents.

I read so much about the Wood Wicks that I had to try them. I purchased a set of three 7-oz jars from a personal seller. I got Black Raspberry, Nectarine, and Sangria. I did enjoy all the scents, and was delighted that I didn't detect those artifical undertones that spoil something good. I found myself inhaling to get more of each scent. I was wanting, but unable, to turn up the scent volume on each. Of the three, Nectarine gave the best throw. I wouldn't recommend this size for a large area; it needs a smaller, closed-off space. Or just double-up. Black Raspberry: A nice switch from those rampant sun-kissed overly-ripe raspberry scents rampant in bath, body, and and candle companies. Not that I don't enjoy those at times; this was different though. The scent had a purity to it as I mentioned above. I am always happy when that happens. All three scents that I tried performed well in that way. Nectarine: Surprisingly, my favorite of the three. When I sniffed it cold, it didn't impress me much, but once lit, I really, really, really liked this scent! I'd go back to OV just for this one! It smells fresh & genuine...ahhh! Sangria: I love ALL things Sangria, and enjoyed this scent cold straight from the jar. Once lit, it seemed to lose some of the subtleties that I found so delicious. Still, it was very, very nice, even if it took second place to Nectarine. I wanted to rate this company higher just for the awesome and enjoyable wood wick idea. As the scent pool grows, the sound seems to subside just a little, but maybe with the larger size that wouldn't happen. I was unable to get a complete scent pool to the edges of the glass containers. I was easily able to coax the wax lips into the melted pools, but in moments, the edges solidified, and there was that edge again. Not major tunneling, just an edge. A really good candle, in my opinion, should be as maintenance free as possible. I'm such a scent freak, however, that scent rules over wax quality! All three candles burned very slowly, so I know they'll last awhile. Will I go back to OV? You betcha. Gotta get a larger size of that Nectarine, and when I'm in the mood for a Wood Wick, this is the place to shop.

I bought 20 assorted triple fragrance votives. I have started to get into using votives in my bathroom, since I'm not locked in to a particular fragrance for a long time if I were to use a jar. My bathroom is not that big, so I thought votives would be the way to go. It was hit and miss with the votives. Some votives burned clean - no wax left on the sides, and some not. Some of the fragrances were strong and some not so strong. It is a great way to sample their fragrances. I found that my candles got stronger starting with the 2nd scent. I don't know why, it could just be me. If you want to try them they are now offering free shipping for orders over $39 which I thought was a good deal.

I have bought from this company many times. The ease of picking them up in MANY different stores is probably the reason why. I like the tiny 5 ounce candles in triple scent for holiday gift giving. They are cute with the little bail handle when I want a little token gift. The scent throw is weak compared to the many other companies, here on CF- but at least there's no "shipping costs". I wanted to comment on the NEW "Wood Wick" candles....what a disappointment!!! I was so looking forward to them, since I do not have a fireplace and love candle burning. The sound is so soft you can barely hear it. Now I know the sound should only be as loud as a candle could be, but I wanted more pop. It was just like static on a radio. To me, the sound is annoying....not at all what I expected. It does not "crackle" like a fire-it "buzzes"- and as the wax pools, the sound gets even quieter. I tried the Currant which was way to sweet for my taste. Oh well. On a positive note, I do enjoy their tarts- particularly the Vanilla Cinnamon, Evergreen Apple, Hot Cinnamon Rolls, Sugar Cookies, Hot Apple Pie and Vanilla Cream. They also have some great summery scents but I usually don't buy fruity or floral.

My mother got me a bunch of these candles and I have to say I like them but they're not anything truly special. Also, don't get any of their triple fragrances without realizing that you won't really be able to smell the second or third layer as much as the first layer. For some reason the lower layers are really muted or something. You had better like that top layer too because their candles will definately fill a medium to large room in the beginning. I do have some of their single fragranced candles in both their charmed and farmgrown collections that are pretty jars and I prefer them over the triples. I really like their single fragrances and they seem to have a longer life than the triples. They all burn pretty cleanly but you need to keep the wick under control or else it will smoke. But they're not nearly as bad as Yankees in this regard. If I hadn't gotten them as a gift, I probably would have stuck to other brands but now I kinda like them.

I tried lots of their tarts they well in AC Moore. Oatmeal Cookie smelled pretty good for a short time, then the smell faded away. Blue martina was different- again, it was pretty strong at first, then faded away. For the price I paid, they were okay, as long as you don't expect any more than an hour of two or scent from each. I used the entire tart which came in two pieces- so to use only half would of been even weaker.

I tried some of their triple scented/layered candles that were on special. I first saw them advertised on QVC and thought I'd check out their website. I ordered direct from the company. I was a bit dissappointed as I thought they'd be really strong smelling, you can smell them when burning if you are fairly close. I have a very open living area and it takes a lot to fill the area...these did not. So I try to burn in a smaller area so I can smell them. They seem to burn evenly and appear to be of high quality. Don't seem to smoke bad. I just always trim my wicks before burning any candle. Helps tremendously. Price is a little high. I might give them a try again later, but there are others I'll try first.

I tried Mandarin Sage and Mango . They were sufficiently srong and moderately authentic but a little too much like air freshener for me. I am a snob. Fairly clean burning. Cute jars and accessories if you are into that. If you order from QVC they have an excellent return policy.

I have tried the single scent candle Citrus Slices and was not impressed. The scent was not strong and it tunneled. One wick. I bought it from QVC because I wanted the kitty S'Topper that came with it. I have tried three Wood Wick candles and like them. The Pink Grapefruit was not strong enough but was a nice scent and pink color. The Sangria is a nice medium scent and a nice red color. A fruity scent but not sweet. The Fireside was a fairly strong and smoky scent and an ash gray color. The wood wicks do crackle and hiss. They are easy to scrape the burnt char off. The jars are a very pretty hourglass shape with a nice wooden lid. The puffy plastic label on the jar can be easily removed and the WW decals on the wooden lid can be removed easily as well. They did tunnel but not nearly as bad as the regular jar did. The wooden wicks made me nervous as if they got too long the triangle shaped flame got too high for my comfort and some tiny sparks flew. Plus the crackling hiss attracted my kittens and I felt I had to watch the candles and kittens at all times.

I do not care for this brand of candle. I don't feel you get much fragrance and the wax melts smell waxy and very artificial. This company offers many different types of candles and fragrances but I have not had good experiences with this particular brand.

I purchased two of the Triple Fragranced jars in Christmas scents (thankfully after Christmas at 1/2 off.) These were a big dissapointment. The jars tunneled so badly. They burned a 2" hole straight down and that was it! Now I've had some tunneling problems with my Yankee candles, but this I couldn't believe. The scent throw was nonexistent, for obvious reasons- no melt pool. I like their melts. They smell nice and are pretty long-lasting, which is why I tried the jars. (n)

I saw these candles on QVC and thought I would give them a try. Boy was I disappointed. My fist candle (one scent only) burned perfectly. The others (triple layer scents)tunnelled terribly no matter what I did to prevent it. The wicks seemed to be drowing in melted wax. I got the monthly special which included the candle topper. The first one arrived broken which they replaced. The next monthly special with topper arrived intact but after buring the candle for a couple of hours, the glue loosened and the the topper came apart. I have toppers from 4yrs ago that have stood the test of time. When I reported the problem to customer service, I was told that I can't remove the topper until it cools. DUH!! I think I already knew that. They did replace the topper but I will not order from them again. There are much better candle companies out there.
