Introduction to my review:
I am a newbie to reed diffusers but they have always intrigued me. I love seeing them displayed in beautiful, glamorous magazines and have often found myself wanting a little bit of that glamour too. When I decided to try them out, one company in particular caught my eye ”“ Hillhouse Naturals.
Hillhouse Naturals has been around for a while ”“ since 1986. I’m a bit surprised I haven’t tried any of their products before. And what a range of products they have! In addition to the reed diffusers, Hillhouse Naturals offers candles, sprays, sachets and potpourri in a variety of scents. What started out as a small, family owned business on a farm has blossomed into a remarkably successful company that has over 30 local employees and several distributers throughout the country. They remain on that family farm while being hailed as a luxury brand with over 50 different fragrances to choose from. One neat thing I discovered about Hillhouse Naturals is that the packaging for their diffusers and glass candles is printed with 100% wind power! I love a candle company with a conscience!
Hillhouse Naturals gets their fragrance inspiration from the garden, which is easy to see when you visit their website. The website itself is very unassuming, but once you click on the Every Day Collections, you’ll soon discover the heart of it all. The Desert Collection. The Bloom Collection. Even The Good Dog Collection! I spent literally hours (shhhh!) here, exploring all the different collections and the intriguing scent offerings within. I finally settled on Mango from the Signature Collection ”“ something about the simple, clean lines appealed to me and who could go wrong with mango?? |
What did my Hillhouse Naturals Reed Diffuser look like? Reed diffusers come in all sorts of scents and styles but the basic concept is the same: you take a highly concentrated fragrance oil in a bottle and insert reeds that will wick up the oil and gently disperse the scent throughout the room. There is no heat source required, so it can be a very safe way to enjoy fragrance in your home.
The packaging for my Hillhouse Naturals reed diffuser was simplistic in design, a hallmark of the Signature Collection. The logo and scent name were clearly identified on the package and there was a window that allowed viewing of the diffuser bottle and reeds.
There were 12 natural color bamboo reeds in my package. The jar containing the fragrance oil was simplistic but of obvious high quality ”“ thick and sturdy. The jar had no external markings except on the very bottom (where the scent name was printed). That means you can make this reed diffuser set as part of your décor without any distractions. The jar was capped and sealed to assure fragrance oil freshness. |
What did my Hillhouse Naturals Reed Diffuser smell like?
The description of Mango can be found on various websites that carry products from Hillhouse Naturals.
Exactly what I would want from mango! The mention of some added jasmine was soooo unexpected, so I couldn’t wait to get down to business with this diffuser. The quality of the fragrance oil will vary from company to company and that will naturally produce different results. The fragrance oils used by Hillhouse are from 100% pure botanicals ”“ very high quality, so I went into things expecting a lot. Removing the cap did take a bit of effort but once off, I could tell I was in for something special. I closed my eyes and inhaled the most fresh, juicy realistic mango scent. Tropical heaven!!
I started the diffuser out in my powder room, since I wasn’t quite sure what to expect scent throw-wise. I plunked the reeds down into the bottle and left for about half an hour. I could already detect some of the scent in the air ”“ subtle, but definitely present. The scent was fresh and incredibly refreshing. Can a scent be juicy? Well, this one was! I left it to do its magic and checked frequently throughout the day. The scent seemed to become most potent in the room after about a full eight hours and then maintained that level of throw for the next day or so. The mango scent remained incredibly fresh and juicy. I could not pick out any added jasmine, but there was definitely a little something extra that kept this mango scent from becoming boring and stale. Must have been the jasmine! |
How did my Hillhouse Naturals reed diffuser perform?
The apparent trick with the diffusers is knowing when to “flip your reeds.” Not your lid ”“ your reeds! You take them out and turn them over ”“ putting the ends that have been sitting directly in the oil into the air and allowing the other ends to begin soaking. You will note right after ‘the flip’ you will get a punch of scent in the air. Of course, that potency will decrease over the next several days until you’re at the point where you feel you need to flip again. Since I am used to the scent strength that comes from wax melts and candles, I found myself flipping these reeds every 3 ”“ 4 days. It wasn’t exactly necessary ”“ even when I allowed the reeds to sit for a week or more, the diffuser continued to fragrance my room quite nicely. But I often went for the stronger throw, which is why I flipped more often.
I also tried this diffuser in one of my bedrooms to see how it would work in a larger space. Perfect! The scent throw was enough to make the room feel like a tropical oasis without being too much to make it difficult to relax or sleep ”“ especially important for people that may not be used to strong home fragrances or that have allergies. I didn’t have much success with it in my living room, but this is a much larger, open space so I really wasn’t surprised. I am still actively using this diffuser and I can see it lasting for months. The oil has remained fragranced and the diffuser continues to scent the room I have it housed it for now. That certainly makes the price of the diffusers seem more worth it! |
Closing to my review: I enjoyed my first reed diffuser experience and I thoroughly enjoyed the Hillhouse Naturals brand. They have sooooo many scents I would love to try! I was super impressed with the (French) Mango scent, so I’m sure I will be back for more. I expect I will dabble more in reed diffusers, but I will certainly keep it in perspective. I think they are perfect for that gentle fragrancing I enjoy every now and again and would make a great option for home fragrance when entertaining guests. If looking to fragrance a large, open space well, it may take two of these diffusers at once to do the trick ”“ so be sure to keep that in mind. My suggestion? Give Hillhouse Naturals and reed diffusers a try today!
Naturally yours,
~ Andrea
