Feeding the birds

Recommended Posts

Dabba - here is my favorite recipe - it has the most goodies in it so many birds seem to like it.

1 lb. lard

1 C peanut butter

1/2 c raisins

2 c mixed bird seed, sunflower seeds

1 1/2 c whole wheat flour

1 1/2 c Oats

1 1/2 c Corn Meal

Chopped apple may be added

Melt lard and peanut butter in a large bowl in the microwave. Stir in remaining ingredients. Add more oats to make a stiff "dough" if needed.

Press into a foil lined 9x13 pan and refrigerate. When hardened, cut into squares. (I then wrap each square in foil and freeze.)

Debra - this sounds interesting and would be a great project for kids. What do you do with the final treat? Do you just put it on the ground or hang it somehow from a tree? Thanks for the recipe.

tobe - I cut it into squares to fit the feeders - the wire box hangers (sold where the commercial bird food is sold.) If you have not seen them, these have hooks so that you can hang them on the fence or a tree. Mine is pretty neat as it is designed for woodpeckers, there is a long board on the bottom for them to balance their tails.
