Floral Blends
Introduction to my floral blending journey with Scentchips:
If you read my introduction, Scentchips scent me over 54 different fragrances to blend my own creations for their website. FUN!!!! I had a tough time deciding which direction I wanted to go and ended up starting with floral scents since they sent me a nice variety. I admit in full disclosure, blending florals was actually much harder than I thought it would be. Here are the floral scents I received:
Magnolia
Honeysuckle
Jasmine
Moonflower
Lilac
Cactus Flower
Lily of the Valley
Plumeria
Lavender
The only two above I really cared for were the Lavender and Plumeria so this was going to be a very interesting project for me. Their recipe book shows most mixes blending floral with floral and I didn’t want to go that route. My idea was to taper down the floral so it’s only a small element in the overall fragrance. We’ll see how it goes.
My first blend.
Magnolia + Peach + Tobacco Leaf
When I smelled Magnolia, it was very sweet but not as overwhelming as some of the other floral scents in the above list. Peach is such a sweet and delicious fruit, when I combined the two, they smelled really good together. I added tobacco leaf for a touch of sophistication. We’ll see how my experiment pans out. Eeeeek!!! I felt like a mad scientist brewing wild concoctions in my laboratory. I also warned my husband of my experimenting and that he had to put up with it or else. Floral scents are not his forte either so he deserved fair warning.
Result – not bad. I mixed equal parts Magnolia to Peach with maybe 10% tobacco leaf and the fragrance was pretty fruity with a touch of sweet floral. I could have probably added more tobacco leaf and I think I will next time.
Jasmine + Bergamot + Lime
I know Bergamot is blended with a lot of florals so I figured that was a safe bet… same with lime. We’ll see how my experiment goes. I went light on the Jasmine, 2 chips to 5 bergamot, 5 lime.
The result… great! I liked it. Even my hubby didn’t complain. Lime dominated with the jasmine light and subtle… it was there but toned down enough where it didn’t overpower. It was perfect.
Moonflower + Passion fruit + Chamomile
I’m going on pure instinct here… Moonflower didn’t smell strong from the bag but boy once it was melting… super strong. I went with equal parts passion fruit and chamomile to 1 part Moonflower and the floral dominated all the way. Next time I’ll go with 1 teeny chip of floral to equal parts the other two to see if that’s better.
However… if you’re a floral fan… this blend was really lovely. It reminded me of a soft and delicate perfume. It was powdery and girly. Those are the two best words to describe this blend. Very feminine.
Cactus Flower + Apricot + Wood Bouquet
Cactus flower smelled like a really green floral. When I paired it with apricot, which is very sweet fruit, they blended beautifully together. I added Wood Bouquet for some added sophistication but only a teeny bit. This blend is 70% apricot. 20% cactus flower, 10% wood bouquet.
Result… Cactus flower dominated this blend all the way. I even changed it up and tried 85% Apricot, 10% Cactus Flower to 5% Wood Bouquet and the Cactus Flower still ruled the roost. It’s not your typical floral either… it has a lot of green/plant like qualities to it if that makes sense. The overall scent was interesting and boy was it strong!
Lilac + Pink Grapefruit
I wasn’t too sure about this blend at first but when I paired these two together… it actually smelled pretty good. I opted for 80% Pink Grapefruit, 20% Lilac.
Result… not bad. The grapefruit really toned down the heaviness of the floral and the overall scent was fresh and uplifting. I could do this one again.
Plumeria + Raspberry + Coconut
I don’t know why but I had a tough time coming up with a blend for Plumeria that wasn’t already created on ScentChips website. You think of Plumeria and you think “tropical” so I ended up with Plumeria, Raspberry and Coconut and when blended together, it smelled pretty good. Once melting… the Plumeria dominated the fragrance no matter what percentage I tried. It was a great floral blend, just not what I imagined in my head.
Lily of the Valley + Ocean + Patchouli
Seems like an odd blend but so far, this mix turned out to be nice. I did equal parts Ocean and Patchouli to 1 part Lily of the Valley and the overall scent…. masculine and fresh! I liked it and my husband never said a word so he didn’t mind it either.
Lavender + Sage + Peppermint
I think you can blend anything with lavender and it’s a winner. I even tried a lavender blended with green apple not long
ago and it rocked! With this blend, I did equal parts lavender and peppermint with 1 part sage. The result… a nice and fresh minty lavender with a perfect touch of herbal sage. Everyone in my family loved this one.
Lavender + Lemongrass + Eucalyptus
I love Lavender/Lemon blends so why not try Lemongrass in place of lemon? And for an added interesting touch, I threw in some eucalyptus to the mix for an added bit of burst. I did equal parts lavender and lemongrass to 1 part eucalyptus.
The result…. lovely! The added eucalyptus gives in a more herbal vibe that I enjoyed. I’ll mix this blend again.
My last floral bend
Honeysuckle + Driftwood
I saved the floral I was dreading the most for last. Honeysuckle. It’s so heavy and sweet and makes me noxious but I was determined to create a blend from every floral scent I received. This was the hardest one to pair with something so I enlisted my 11 year old to help me and together we chose to pair it with Driftwood. They smelled pretty good together. Once melting… the fragrance was strong and reminded me of a heavy perfume. My son thought the same. My husband… (laughing) did not like it – at all! It was his least favorite of all the scents I blended over the past week and a half but he endured it for me.
If you love heavy perfume kind of scents… you would probably like this blend. It was beyond strong.
Closing comments:
And that my friends concludes my floral blending journey with ScentChips. Looking at their scent list, I probably would have opted for different blends had I been able to choose from their entire scent list but I had to work with what was
sent to me. It was interesting and I had fun. I have to say the Lavender blends were the household favorites for sure.
I also want to add that I fully took advantage of the three setting feature on my melter. There were a few blends that were pretty strong and I ended up lowering the setting so the scent throw wasn’t as intense. I am loving that feature and I know I’ll be using it quite a bit in the future.
What a fun concept this is to create your own blends like a mad scientist. Definitely give this company a try if you’re feeing adventurous. And if you want to try the blends I created, you can either order the scents separately and blend yourself or Scentchips created a page to showcase the blends and even gave them cool names.
