What did my candle smell like?

Don’t you just love it when you purchase a fragrance only to find out shortly after it’s a retiring scent? That always puts a frown on my face considering I review everything I purchase. Cedar Mint (I just found out) is a retiring scent but I decided to review it anyway since it can still be purchased on Colonial’s website as well as other online retail sites that carry this brand. Why not? But before I get into what I smelled… I first want to mention how gorgeous this candle was. The color was a beautiful teal green – much deeper than the color of the candle above. The label showed mint leaves on a blurred background which popped against the bright teal wax. Very pretty.

Let’s start with the scent description:

“Rejuvenate with notes of eucalyptus leaf and garden herbs flowing over blue jasmine, amber crystals, and soothing sandalwood.”

disappointed candleThat sounds quite lovely but I was confused smelling this candle for the first time and then reading that description. By the scent name, I imagined rustic cedar with eucalyptus which is another strong and bold scent but that’s not what I smelled. To me, this scent smelled like a grocery store detergent soap – or better yet, it smelled like laundry soap – harsh soap. Seriously. I didn’t smell any cedar or mint. I didn’t even smell herbs, amber or sandalwood. So weird. And just for the fun of it, I put the candle up to my husband’s nose to get his take on it and he immediately scrunched his nose and said – “EW! That smells like cheap men’s cologne.” (Yikes!)

Sorry Colonial…. Just keeping it real……. and I think I’m now seeing why it’s being discontinued. The candle itself was beautiful and bold as with all Colonial Candles but the scent was just…. weird.

I lit this candle in my large master bedroom since Colonial’s large jars are usually room fillers for me. Once lit, it took a good 30 minutes to really start noticing the scent and it actually smelled better burning than it did cold.  I still smelled soap but it was fresher and not as harsh once the aroma filled my bedroom.

Strength – on a scale of to 10, I would rate this scent an 8. Not super strong but gave a nice and steady medium throw.

candle-flameHow did my candle burn?

This candle burned great. Zero issues. Clean and even burn from beginning to end.

Closing to my review:

Being honest, I wasn’t impressed with this candle and definitely wouldn’t purchase it again. It wasn’t cedar and it wasn’t minty… it was just plain weird. I was pretty bummed. The plus side…. and there usually always is one – this candle was gorgeous. The wax was a vibrant teal and wow was it amazing to watch burn. thumbs down candle 1

So if you run across the candle, smell it… and then let us know what you think.

Happy candle hunting!

  1. I LOVE eucalyptus and fresh, clean scents but never did smell the first bit of cedar or mint. It has been a few years since I’ve bought a nicer candle and for some stupid reason thought I was supposed to trim my candle wick to just under 1 inch. MISTAKE. My wicks started drowning immediately. So, of course, I went in search of the ‘fix’ and came across this site through my google search. I used to buy YC and Gold Canyon candles often and loved them with the occasional B&BW thrown in. I love a candle with a big scent throw, I wanna be able to smell it all through the apartment. This one didn’t do that for me. I guess I am on the search for my “go to’ again since I have been out of the candle buying game for quite awhile. My mom had copd and scents bothered her badly so we didn’t burn candles or have anything with scent. She passed on in 2012 and I guess I just ‘woke up’ and wanted to get my candle addiction woke up again as well lol
