Spotted Hog Candles
This is absolutely one of my favorite places to shop – for good reason! There’s a huge array of super delicious scent choices with some incredible blends thrown in the mix. There are shaped tarts, clamshells, tart cups, candles. The list goes on and on and on. Add excellent customer service on top of that and folks, we have a winner! I’d known from previous experience that I really loved their Birthday Cake scent. Scrolling through the scent list I noticed a blend to add to this review ”“ Fruit Loop Cupcakes. Drool much?!?
Birthday Cake
First up was Birthday Cake:
“Rich buttery vanilla cake topped with sweet and creamy vanilla frosting. One of Spotted Hog’s best sellers for over 7 years, very strong and true birthday cake aroma. No other birthday cake will compare!.”
I tried this scent in the 18oz Happy Birthday candle – a gorgeous apothecary style jar with a black lidded handle and the identification label clearly on the front. The wax was a buttery yellow for the majority of the candle, but here’s the kicker ”“ there’s a white “frosting” layer on top complete with rainbow sprinkles! This big beauty was double wicked which I really liked. My nose sank into the jar as soon as the lid came off. I could smell buttery goodness, so I couldn’t wait to burn it. It did not take long at all for this candle to start putting out its scent. And sisters and brothers let me tell you what a fantastic scent it was!! To me this was the perfect blend of buttery vanilla-y cake-y goodness and sweet, creamy buttercream frosting. I could pick out both aspects, maybe a bit heavier on the cake side. This was not a sugary sweet scent but a good overall bakery scent. The Spotted Hog website rates this scent as four stars, meaning the scent throw is pretty strong. I would have to agree with that assessment. This candle was quite powerful and it made for a clean burn.
FruitLoop Cupcakes
After such a huge success, I was geared up to try FruitLoop Cupcakes:
“A Spotted Hog Original Custom Blend~ Fruit Lupes blended with Birthday Cake.”
I ordered this scent in the 2oz round tart cups. The first thing I noticed when this got going was that delicious buttery cake scent again. Then BAM! The scent of Fruit Loops started hitting the air. Man, this was sooooo realistic! This was a cakey or heavier kind of fruit loop scent. I could almost chew on the air. One tart lasted a long, long time and the throw completely filled the medium sized room I was in. This scent was also rated four stars and again I would certainly agree. Both of these scents were true winners.
Scentral Station
Scentral Station is a self-owned business that has been serving up good smelling products since 2002. I had not actually made a purchase here before, but when preparing this review I decided to take the plunge.
Scentral Station has a pretty big scent list for candles, reed diffusers and fragrance oils. I decided to try their Birthday Cake scent in an 8oz candle. This single-wicked candle was housed in a mason jar with a bronze, screw-top lid. When I removed the lid, a pleasant surprise ”“ a present embed right on top and some sparkly red glitter! Super cute!! Here’s what the site says about their Birthday Cake version:
“The smell alone will make you want to sing. Cake with spices.”
Hmmmm… birthday cake with some spices? Interesting. My cold sniff reminded me of a tub of buttercream frosting. No spices here. I started this candle in a medium sized room. I didn’t detect any scent throw after half an hour so I checked back an hour later. Then two hours later. And, well, sadly I didn’t get any scent throw whatsoever. I was sooooo disappointed! I decided to move this to a much smaller room. This still did not do the trick. No birthday cake. No spices. The candle did burn evenly and cleanly.
Kayloma Candles
This is a neat candle company based in West Virginia. I wanted to include this company because their candles are made from natural palm wax. They offer over 550 scents including Birthday Cake:“A sweet, creamy pure vanilla. Very rich and potent with a buttery top note!”
I chose to review the 18oz primitive apothecary style jar with a flat glass-top lid. The candle arrived in a black gift box, which I thought was a nice touch. When I took out the jar I was mesmerized by the pretty crystal pattern that palm wax is so well known for. Beautiful!! The wax color was a buttery yellow and the candle had two wicks. Cold sniff was strange for me – I didn’t really smell cake or frosting. Of course, the truth is in the burning so I lit this candle so it could get to work. Oooooh, was I in for a birthday surprise!! The smell was that of a rich, buttery cake with heavy vanilla notes swirled in. So, so good! No frosting in this one ”“ nothing but the cake. But that was good enough for this nose. I really wouldn’t call this a sweet scent, more of a heavy bakery scent. The candle throw was fantastic and what a clean burning candle. This was a great candle that I would be sure to purchase again.
Cleanse your Soul
Another scent lover’s dream is a little place called Cleanse Your Soul. This shop has a scent list that is simple amazing… commonplace scents and blends galore. It was no surprise to me that I found a few scents perfect for this review here. For wax you can choose scallops or tart cups. I went with the 2oz clear oval tart cups. Delivery here took a little bit longer than most but certainly worth the wait. Here’s what I tried:
Birthday Cake
Gotta start with the basics, right? The scent description is simply:
“Sweet cake with vanilla frosting.”
This birthday cake scent was heavy on the sweet frosting with underlying buttery cake notes. Ummmmm. This was creamy and delicious. The scent throw was enough to fill a moderately sized room.
Pink Chocolovers Cake
Next up was an interesting blend Pink Chocolovers Cake.
“Pink Sugar, Chocolovers and Birthday Cake.”
Here’s where I could get some of those chocolate notes! This was a sexy, sugary scent. The creamy dark chocolate with and end note of sweet pink sugar. The birthday cake just added another dimension to this complex scent. A very good blend with a stronger scent throw than the straight up Birthday Cake.
I also tried:
Happy Birthday Cupcakes:
“Sugary pink lemonade blended w/ white wedding cake, marshmallow topping and a cherry on top.”
This little hot pink tart had a sweet, light scent that reminded me of a tall glass of pink lemonade. A little bit of gooey marshmallow was noted, keeping this scent from being too tart. I never picked out any cherry notes. All in all a great scent but I wish it were a tad stronger.
Triple Layer Cake
Cleanse Your Soul released a new scent in June that I had to snatch up for this review ”“ Triple Layer Cake. Oh my goodness. It’s described as:
“A layer of birthday cake, a layer of white wedding cake and a layer of angel food cake topped with marshmallow vanilla icing. Yummmmm!”
Most marshmallow scents I’ve tried have been on the lighter side and this was no exception. It still put out a decent throw ”“ sticky, sweet marshmallow was the most noticeable. I detected a bit of almond and every now and again some of that wonderful birthday cake. This is sure to become one of my new favorites.
For Every Body Candles
For Every Body literally has something for everybody. Fun, fun, fun candles these are. I’ve found some really great scents through the years with this company. When I went hunting for Birthday Cake, I found not one but FOUR candles to choose from. Being the indecisive person that I am, I decided to try them all. How could I be objective if I didn’t try them all? You’re with me, right? Anyone? Here’s what I ended up with: the 6oz Happy Birthday Vanilla candle, the 22oz Birthday Surprise Candle, the 10oz Kardashian Birthday Cake candle and the 7oz Birthday Cake candle. These candles were incredibly cute… each a bit different, but all housing that wonderful birthday cake scent. (Yes, to my dismay, the scent was pretty much the same from candle to candle. But the packaging made up for that disappointment!)
Birthday Surprise
The large 22oz candle was called Birthday Surprise.
“Our number one best seller is everyone’s favorite, year round! It’s no surprise to us! Birthday cake at its finest. Topped with multicolored sugar cake toppings.”
A cute apothecary style jar with a flat lid and a label complete with cake, candles and presents. The white creamy wax was topped with birthday cake sprinkles. This was a one-wick candle… I would have preferred two with this size of a jar but it didn’t keep me from enjoying it. When lit, this big boy packed a punch. HUGE scent throw that reminded me of a batch of homemade buttercream frosting. Not much cake in this candle but it was still very good. A clean burn without any wasted wax.
Home Baked – Birthday Cake
The 7oz Home Baked Candle in Birthday Cake was just adorable. A round, clear glass jar with white wax and sugar sprinkles afloat on top. For Every Body has a lot to say about this candle:
“There is no more waiting once a year for the aroma of a moist, homemade cake trimmed with sweet cream frosting and sprinkles to come from the kitchen. You might not want blow this on out. Topped with bright multicolored sugar cake toppings.”
Mmmm, that buttercream frosting again. A much smaller throw simply because of the candle size but it would fill a small room with sugary, sweet scent.
Happy Vanilla Birthday
Next up was the Tiny Temptation, Happy Vanilla Birthday. A cute little candle with pink wax and sprinkles on top. It doesn’t get more traditional that this party favorite.
“Vanilla cake mix with a serious amount of vanilla frosting. If you love vanilla… this is your recipe. Topped with multi-colored sugar cake toppings.”
This cutey could only put out so much scent so it would be good for a small space. This smelled identical to the Birthday Cake scent.
Birthday Cake – Kardashian Line
The Kardashian line for For Every Body is new so there is only one scent offered right now. And wouldn’t you know, it’s Birthday Cake!?!
This candle is housed in a beautiful glass jar with a slightly flared bottom and domed glass lid to balance out the top. There is a peel-off label on the front with an intricate design. The wax is tan in color and there is a single wick. No fancy, schmancy toppings on this candle. I get the feel this is to be considered their more sophisticated rather than fun line. This candle scent was much like the others… a sweet, buttercream scent. Think more frosting than cake.
This candle had a decent throw for its size it would comfortably fill a medium sized room. One thing I noticed is that this candle burns down fast! I’m not sure if the wax formula is different but it sure seemed to burn a lot faster than the other FEB candles. This should just be something to consider since this candle was a bit pricier than the rest of the line. And other than looks, it really smelled the same.
Conclusion to by big “Birthday Cake” review:
Well they say all good things must come to an end. And folks, we’re at the end of this colossal review. I had a BLAST doing this review and I hope you had one while reading. Am I sick of Birthday Cake at this point? Heck, no!! I never realized how different the same scent could be from different companies until I tried them side by side. And oh what fun that was!!
Did I have a favorite? Hmmmm… that’s so hard to say because they were so different and I enjoyed the majority of these scents. For a pure birthday cake scent, I’d have to say Kayloma Candles was my favorite. Mixing in a little frosting? Then I’d have to look for Spotted Hog, Gold Canyon or Can Do. Are you one to just lick the frosting off the cake? Try For Every Body for some pure frosting scents. Although I loved the majority of the blends I tried, Candle Marketplace’s Birthday Cake (with added French Vanilla). was beyond good!
Time to turn out the lights for this birthday party. Now get out there and celebrate with the real deal!!
Happy Birthday, America!
