Can Scents Help?

Low self-esteem is described as the lack of confidence in one’s ability to perform, and the low sense of self-worth as an individual.Life can be rough. Dealing with negativity on a daily basis can wear down one’s self-esteem. However, reacting differently to the way that your life is going can help. Did your boss tell you that you are not working up to par? Have you found yourself suddenly alone? We can all agree that these are not particularly pleasant situations. However, instead of feeling sorry for yourself, you can learn to take charge of your life.Change won’t happen immediately. It will take time. In addition to your own reaction to events, you may want to consider the use of scents. Did you know that there are scents that will help you with your self-esteem issues? Aromatherapy (aro·ma·ther·a·py – noun) is described as the use of volatile plant oils, including essential oils, for psychological and physical well-being.

While changes in your attitude and behavior are important, scents can help you. For example, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang are recommended for low self-esteem. Sandalwood is woody and sweet. Ylang Ylang is a heavy scent that is sweet and floral. Some recommended use for treatments are to: add 10 drops into a bath and soak for 15 minutes (now, that sounds pleasant); add one of these to a carrier oil to use in a full body massage (examples of carrier oils are sunflower or grapeseed oils); or use it as an inhalant.

Insecurity can affect the way you feel about yourself. It is described as having a feeling of instability in can scents help?one’s life. It can be applied to many areas, including relationships, work environment or one’s self. Frankincense and, once again, Sandalwood are recommended treatments. Frankincense is sweet and warm. It combines well with Lavender, which is very calming and therapeutic.

Anxiety affects us all from time to time. A new job or a change in routine can make any of us feel anxious. A suggested treatment is to add 10 drops to a bath and soak for 15 minutes with Bergamot or Cedarwood or Lavender.

Using Chamomile can help nervous tension. Most everyone has heard of Chamomile in the form of a tea. It can also be used as an oil and combines well with Bergamot, Geranium or Lavender.

Now that the idea of tea has been mentioned, why not take some time to calm your body’s natural balance. Sipping on a cup of tea in a quiet and aesthetically pleasing location might help.

The Kava plant is a member of the peppercorn family and is a very good medicinal and beverage plant. It is well known for alleviating anxiety. Why not enjoy a warm, soothing cup of Kava tea as part of your routine?

Herbal teas can also be used for the bath. Bathing in a tub of water juiced with herbs can be an almost mystical experience. Rather than placing the tea leaves in the tub, simmer the herbs for 5 minutes, steep them for 10 minutes, and then pour the mixture directly into the tub through a strainer. The “tea” is stronger and does a better job, plus the fragrance created by simmering the tea is a beautiful bonus. You can also add a complimentary dropper full of essential oil to a quart of the material if you want.

You may also want to use this mixture for a massage. To complete your herbal tea bath, take a carrier oil like sweet almond oil. Add three drops of the oil to the combination and massage your feet, then feel the tensions drain from your day. Finally, we can’t talk about making your day better without including the benefit of candles. Why not light an aromatherapy candle while you sip on that cup of tea or enjoy your soothing bath?

Soy candles with essential oils are extremely pleasing. For example, candles scented with: Eucalyptus, are good for healing and cool the emotions; Grapefruit, is uplifting and refreshing; Lavender, is calming and helps to reduce anxiety; Patchouli, is also calming and relaxing; Peppermint, is invigorating and stimulating; and Ylang Ylang, increases self love, joy, confidence and peace. The atmosphere created by the soft light of the candle augments the unique and pleasing scent.

These treatments do not take a lot of time. Just a few minutes per day can do wonders for one’s self-esteem. For those of you who may have additional health considerations, please contact your physician.

Remember to treat yourself well. Believe in yourself. You deserve it.
