I’ve been gearing up for Fall with some heavier and bakery scents in anticipation of the cooler weather. I don’t really melt/burn seasonally, but I know many of our readers do so I’m trying to conform. One of the wax melts I’ve enjoyed recently is Bear Claws from Dessa’s Homespun Scents. Dessa has become so incredibly popular, it is sometimes very hard to get the stuff I want! But as long as I get something of Dessa’s, I’m a pretty happy camper, as her products are top notch. I love bakery scents and I love Dessa’s, so it seemed like a win-win combination to me.
Bear Claws, Dessa’s Homespun Scents
Packaging/Presentation
This Bear Claws wax melt was an oval scent shot – a 2 ounce tart cup with a tight-fitting lid and nice label. The color was a caramel brown, which I found fitting for the scent. Dessa says these cups are approximately 1.5 ounces of wax & I believe her – the tart cup was nice & full! I like that because you feel like you’re getting your money’s worth, right from the start. I also liked that this lid fit (I hate when they pop off in transit!) and it was easy to get the melt out of the cup. All brownie points in my book!
Authenticity
Bakery scents are my first love and I think Dessa does them better than most. This particular wax melt had a lot of heavy notes – very thick and I thought I could smell a bit of cinnamon. Looking at the website for the scent description, I found:

I’d say definitely spot on. I didn’t really get any buttery notes until the wax warmed and then it melted into something so incredibly gooey and delicious. The scent was warm and cozy – it did smell like I had some freshly baked pastries in my kitchen! This was more yeasty and heavy than sugary or syrupy sweet, and that was a-ok with me. Definitely, definitely would be a good one to try if you like bakery scents.
Scent Strength & Scent Throw
The Bear Claws wax melt from Dessa’s was super strong, on both cold sniff and once it warmed. It completely filled my kitchen with its strong aroma and I could smell the fragrance wafting on out across the lower level of my home. It was AMAZING! I did use the entire wax melt at once, but I probably could have split this one in two and gotten great results. That does make this wax melt a really good value, because you can get at least two strong, long-lasting wax melts out of the one cup.
Melt Performance
I used the entire Bear Claws wax melt in my 20W hotplate melter, and I was able to keep it going all. day. long! I turned the melter off and on throughout the day just to add to the longevity of this melt. It was the weekend and I didn’t really feel much like changing out the melters. Lucky for me I had this one going, because it did last me all weekend. Sure, by the end of the weekend it had started to putter out, but it wasn’t completely all gone. It had held strong for a couple of days using that off/on thing with the wax warmer.
Conclusion
Dessa’s Homespun Scents is one of my favorite wax melt companies, and the Bear Claws wax melt reminded me why. Her portions are generous, prices are reasonable, and the wax melts are divine! Especially her bakery scents. Bear Claws was not some fancy schmancy blend, but I don’t always want that. It was a solid, delicious bakery scent that made me immediately want to head to the quickest donut shop. Easily one of our Editor’s Choice wax melts!
