Introduction to my Baked Pumpkin Pie from Better Homes and Gardens review:
It’s officially official… the pumpkin scented craze has begun!! I sometimes have a hard time with that considering it’s still 100 degrees where I live. Burning pumpkin scents when I can literally fry an egg outside my front door just feels “off” to me… but hey – I’m not in charge of what scents launch when so I just go with the flow. Luckily, it’s been gloomy and raining non-stop for the past 5 days which put me in the “pumpkin” burning mood earlier than normal. For my first official Pumpkin Pie review of this year – I decided on a Better Homes and Gardens bakery candle in Baked Pumpkin Pie.
Better Homes and Gardens candles are found in Walmart stores exclusively. Are you a bakery scented candle lover but loath shopping in Walmart? You are not alone… but if you’re curious about these candles… I would urge you to buck up and go smell some. For a mass produced candle… they are pretty darn good!! They only offer a handful of scents in this bakery style jar but what scents they do are authentic and full of warmth and goodness. I am really enjoying them! Prices? Super reasonable… I paid $8 bucks for a 14oz candle and they are super cute to boot.
I find myself migrating to the candle section every time I’m in Walmart now and make a bee-line straight to these bakery candles first hoping there are new scents to smell. I saw Baked Pumpkin Pie on the shelf (seasonal I’m sure) and grabbed one immediately to review. With fall almost here and Thanksgiving around the corner, Pumpkin Pie scents are a must have in every candle lovers household.
What did my Baked Pumpkin Pie candle look like?
These candles are really nicely done. The jar is a creamy ivory ceramic in the shape of a cookie jar (see picture). There was a checkered orange and white gingham ribbon tied around the top of the candle just below the lid with a kraft tri-folded square card tied to it. Inside the kraft card is a pumpkin pie recipe this scent was inspired from. The label on the front of the candle shows a picture of a baked pumpkin pie with the Better Homes and Gardens logo at the top. The wax was a dark pumpkin burnt orange and had one wick in the center.
What did my Baked Pumpkin Pie candle smell like?
There was no scent description for this candle to reference… that I could find anyway. And not that I really needed one but it’s always nice to at least know what notes make up a scent… there are literally dozens upon dozens of pumpkin pie scents out there. It was hard to tell which one this was by cold sniff alone but just smelling it… it reminded me of a warm and creamy pumpkin pie filling. It was a sweet bakery but not too heavy on the spice. It was nice.
I’ve noticed these candles are on the lighter side so I decided to light this one in a small bathroom right off the bat. It was the right call because it performed beautifully there. I waited a good 20 minutes before checking back on it and was greeted to a really nice and spicy pumpkin scent. This fragrance was much spicier burning… it was comforting and cozy.
Did it smell like a real baked pumpkin pie? Yes and no. Yes, you could tell it was a pumpkin scent… it was warm, spicy and smelled of fall. The one element I felt was missing that would have made it almost perfect (for me) was that warm and yummy bakery crust. Although it smelled “pumpkin-y” – I couldn’t smell that buttery pie crust that should go along with any pumpkin pie scent – my ideal one anyway. To me, this candle was all pumpkin filling.
The strength on this candle was pretty light. On a scale of 1 to 10, this was maybe a 4. So if you are after room saturation, maybe burn 2 candles at once or just burn this candle in a smaller room for the best results.
How did my Baked Pumpkin Pie candle burn?
My candle burned pretty good. I had to *really* be vigilant on trimming my wicks or soot would develop around the rim of the candle. Other than that, no wasted wax… nice even burn.
Closing to my review:
All in all, this was a great candle and a perfect scent for fall. Was it the perfect pumpkin pie in my opinion? No but it was pretty good – especially for a mass produced candle. It was pumpkin-y with the right touch of spices. I really enjoyed it. Would I buy this candle again? Yes, for sure.
These candles are priced so reasonably and it’s hard passing them up. I’m really enjoying Better Homes and Gardens bakery line and I’ll be trying more for sure. My only wish, they carried these scents in their clamshell melts. I’d be in heaven… pure bakery heaven! So head on over to Walmart and check these out… I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Happy candle hunting!
