This candle was a fresh, ozone-based scent with a bit of saltiness and warmth. It gave off a light aroma and a nice, clean burn. This would make a great candle for Father’s Day.
- Even, clean burn
- Lighter scent
Annapolis Sail Away from Destinations Scented Candles is my 3rd candle to review from this company. I previously reviewed their Australian Koala Kiss and New Orleans Mardi Gras Parade candles, which I really did like. I’ve found these palm wax candles really cool to burn…they are so beautiful when burning and these candles have not surrounded me with a black, sooty mess. I was anxious to see if I’d have equally good results with this Annapolis Sail Away candle, too.

This candle was the 10 ounce tumbler style with two wicks. The label had a gorgeous photo on it, depicting a bay with lots of boats and a beautiful sunset. This was a double wick candle with a silver, tight-fitting lid. The wax color was the most gorgeous blue color – perfect for the theme of this candle. The company name and scent name were clearly displayed on the label, and this label could be easily removed if so desired. This was an attractive candle for sure.
The cold scent was light and slightly perfumey. It had an ozone smell with a little bit of saltiness.
Take one whiff of this scented candle and be transported to the Sailing Capital of the World! This aroma evokes the notion of strolling along brick streets lined with Maryland flags in red, yellow, black and white giving away to colonial style brick buildings full of quaint gift shops, pubs and inns leading to the docks watching the sailboats come in or tour the United States Naval Academy. You can easily see yourself sailing sailing away in the Chesapeake Bay.
I lit this candle in a small bedroom and let it burn for several hours. I started smelling the watery, ozone scent almost immediately, but it was fairly light. I’ve learned with these palm wax candles to let them burn a little bit longer so they can get past the ‘wax shelf’ and develop a full wax melt pool. That’s exactly what happened with this candle. I had the wax melting first immediately around the wicks and leaving what I originally thought was a tunneling effect. However, letting it burn on out, I found that the wax continued to warm and then a ‘wax shelf’ formed. I was tempted to break the shelf and knock it into the warmed wax, but I resisted and was rewarded. The wax continued to warm and the shelf eventually disappeared, leaving a deep, beautiful wax melt pool. Once this happened, I was able to fully appreciate the beauty of this scent…a cologney, watery scent with some warmth – maybe amber? The saltiness was an added treat. It was very relaxing and comforting – much as I would want from this type of scent.
Scent Strength & Scent Throw
My Annapolis Sail Away candle was a milder scent with a moderate scent throw. It took getting the full wax melt pool to really get the throw I wanted from this candle. It was in a small guest bedroom and did a good job of scenting up that space. I could tell the candle was burning each time I entered the closed off room. I didn’t smell it past that area, though, even with a full melt pool.
This candle had an amazing, flawless burn. I trimmed the fairly long wicks to about 1/4″ prior to burning. The flames on the wicks were large enough to thoroughly melt the wax without getting too out of control. The wax melted like mentioned above, with the shelf thing going on at first. I’ve learned that’s normal with palm wax and I was patient enough to wait and get that nice, full wax melt pool you see in the picture above. There was absolutely no black sooting going on here. I was able to burn this candle for several hours at a time before having to snuff it out.
Annapolis Sail Away was a fresh, watery-based palm wax candle that was a true joy to burn. Once a full wax melt pool was obtained, it gave off a pleasant, soft aroma that was a bit masculine and had a bit of saltiness to give it a bite. This would make a great candle for Father’s Day, or for anyone looking for an ozone-based fragrance. Overall, I enjoyed this candle and have enjoyed all the candles I’ve tried from Destinations Scented Candles. If you’re into palm wax candles, or want to give them a try, I would suggest checking them out!
