Liven Up Your Home Outdoors with Luminaries

By Carolyn O'Conner
Here's a quick tip to liven up your home outdoors for any special occassion or holiday. Buy some inexpensive luminaries and place candles inside.

What's a luminary you ask?

A luminary is a fire-retardant bag that you put a candle in.  (See photo above).  Sand is placed in the bottom so the bag doesn't blow away.  A candle is placed firmly in the sand and the candle is lit.

Brief history of luminaries...

The first luminarias were bonfires of crisscrossed pinon boughs built in 3-foot high squares. The first small paper lanterns were made when colored paper was brought from the Orient. Instead of hanging these fragile lanterns from trees or on wires they were placed on ground walls, rooftops and along pathways.

Light the pathway to your front door, line your driveway or place the luminaries on your front porch.  Use them for weddings or parties and during any holiday event.  The glowing bags at night make for a beautiful and inviting welcome to your guests.

To use a luminary...

Place a pillar candle or votive in a glass holder inside for the source of light. Some sand at the bottom will help to keep the bag from blowing away.  Remember, safety first.  Keep the luminaries a safe distance from where your guests will be walking.
