Tea Drinkers

I'm enjoying my first cup of hot tea. It's Celestial Seasonings Black Cherry Berry tea. Not very exotic, I'm sure, but I just picked up a variety pack at the grocery to see if I would like drinking tea.

I figured tea is better than snacks in this new year. I'm really liking this. I think flavored tea was the way to go for me just starting out, and the little cup & saucer I'm using helps make it special.

Any tea tips or recs. for a newbie? Favorite flavors or brands?

If you really get into tea and want a fabulous flavor (you have to try it to believe the difference) then try getting a glass tea pot that allows you to steep whole tea leaves. Lots of tea places sell them. I think I've even seen them in Target and on Amazon. I have one made by Bodum. You can also do this with a French Press if you already have one.

Some great sources for whole leaf and bagged teas are:

www.republicoftea.com (Republic of Tea)

Both of these places carry whole leaf and bagged tea. You may like ROT more because they offer a lot of flavored teas whereas Peets offers the more standard but very high quality teas such as Black, Earl Grey, Green, White, etc.

Jules... Celestial Seasonings makes a wide variety of teas. Try them iced too. The "Zingers" work great for iced tea.

Tazo makes some nice teas. They are a little more pricey (not too bad though), but like the Celestial Seasonings teas, I can get these at my grocery store (and Target). The Wild Sweet Orange is very tasty. I also have the Vanilla Apricot White. It is very nice too (I think I will have a cup this afternoon!).

Growing up my grandmother always had Swee Touch-Nee brand tea. It is a plain tea, but I love the richness of it. I am not sure that this is available everywhere. I used to be able to purchase this at my local grocery store, but they no longer carry it. My parents have to bring it from New York when they visit. It brings back good memories when I enjoy a cup! Okay.... I'm off topic a little, reminiscing.

Enjoy the tea drinking. Having it in a nice cup is fun too. I love tea. As I get older, tea is a little more gentle on my system than coffee, although I do enjoy my Starbucks (they also carry the Tazo tea!) I usually have a plain cup in the morning, but I like to experiment with different herbal teas on occasion.

Thanks girls.

My teacup and saucer are from my set of dishes. They're probably 16 years old and I've never used them before. :lol: No, I use one of the saucers as a pillar holder. (imagine that)

I'll have to try the regular teas too. I thought the flavors would be a good introduction, but I can certainly see drinking tea flavored tea too. I've had plenty of iced tea, but not hot tea. It's very nice.

I am loving our Teavana teas. The caramel is very yummy. Next time I shop there, I want to try the almond biscotti!

BTW, they sell loose tea, so we purchased on of their tea steepers too. It works great.

I like tea, too! Good idea for a better choice for a snack, Jules. :lol: There's a thread on here on page 2 - under 'Stash chai tea' (or something like that) that has some good suggestions. I tried some SBS teas recommended on there and like em. If you like spicy I think you'd like chai, it comes in lots of combos (vanilla, gingerbread, etc). Also, for a chai drink, Big Train (they make the stuff the coffee houses carries) makes a powdered chai in vanilla, spiced apple, gingerbread, too. It's not a loose tea, it's a mix - but it's delicious!

I second the Republic of Tea - they have very good green teas, too, if you want to head down that path.

Mighty Leaf is my other favorite - Vanilla bean, yum!

Jules, I love tea in the winter too. My favorites are spearmint and peppermint and a new one in a pomegranate flavor (an expensive brand but really good).

Warning: I'm a hot tea freak! I host tea parties for my friends and we all have a great time. Ages ago (I was in my early twenties) I started to really "get into it", learning about regions of the world and the teas grown there, about the first, second, etc. flushing, methods of preparing the leaf.... anyway, tea ad nauseatum [smilie=th_BringItOn]
One of my favorite teas is Assam, it's especially good in the wintertime. Its has full body, and makes a really good cup. Best to drink it with a little milk or cream. When I cannot find Assam, I will settle for Irish Breakfast tea, because it contains Assam.
I cannot stand Earl Grey, though I read that it's the most popular tea around. Not around here, but my daughter does like it. I think the flowery scent (bergamot) is just too strong.
Another tea I like a lot, a lot, a lot is Constant Comment. I add some lemon and sugar. Absolutely delicious [smilie=th_thwoohoonaner2gy] I buy it at Walmart, and it's made by the Bigelow Co.
I do enjoy Celestial Seasoning "teas", especially the one called Sleepy Time.

My husband cannot understand this "tea thing". He asks, "Why is it that you women always have to complicate matters? Can we just have ordinary tea?...." Needless to say, he never makes it on my afternoon tea guest list!! [smilie=th_hmph]

A really great place to purchase your tea is Baltimore Coffee and Tea Co.com. You can purchase tea from one or from several dozen companies if you want. Just about every brand of tea is included. The nice thing is there is a discription of each tea. It can be bought loose or in bags. It makes tea shopping a joy as, usually, you just have a few choices in one place and here it is all there. How interesting. We have more tea drinkers than I thought. I've clearly been missing out on something good all these years with just my DH's iced Lipton. [smilie=th_cuddle-1] I can see that I've only just begun to explore all of the possiblilities. Thanks for the great suggestions.

Here is my favorite tea site below. Warning -- it will take you hours to explore all the flavors, gorgeous teapots, the cute little "teapots for one," tea cosies, etc. on this site. I am a tea drinker all my life. I find tea a real pick-me-up late in the day and I loved the famous "Devonshire Cream Tea" you can get in tearooms in the UK -- so civilized. I often buy clotted cream and strawberry jam online to make my own creamed tea with scones right out of the oven. Yum! I like my tea in a china cup, please. My favorite flavors are ceylon, dajarling, assam and in the winter, once in awhile, a sweet and spicy chai. I too really dislike Earl Grey tea.

Patsy: This looks like a really neat site. The only tea i know is my mom's sweet tea, and I have followed that suit...I need to venture out of the box and maybe try some teas.

Okay... I tried Chai for the first time yesterday. I do not know what took me so long. I love tea.... just never got around to trying Chai. I tried the Tazo decaffeinated Chai. It was FABULOUS. I made it with a teaspoon of raw sugar and some half and half (one of my guilty pleasures!). It was like dessert.... yum! Just had to post about this tea! I have to say that all of the Tazo teas that I have tried have been really nice! [smilie=th_12E9EC16]

Do you use the tazo chai syrup or the teabags?

I use the syrup and an milk frother thingy and it is lovely.

Funny,as a Canadian when we travel to the southern USA the servers in restaurants always bring me ice-tea when I order tea.I have to specify hot tea. here it would be the opposite,most people only drink ice-tea in the summer.

I love frothed iced-chai too!

Denise, I used the Tazo decaf. Chai tea bags. I did not know Tazo makes a syrup.... will have to find that too!
I lived in the south many years ago. I remember that iced sweet tea was a staple!

debra.... I love Starbucks too! I had a Pumpkin Spice Latte yesterday.... my first of the season! What a treat!

Jules.... now I am going to have to hunt down some Chai metls! Hmmm... I think I may have gotten one from Nene's.... will have to dig through my order! :shock:
