Clamshell cubes versus tarts or cups.

Do you have a preference? Is there a difference other than size? For the life of me, I cannot grasp the shaped tart idea. They melt in moments just like the cubes or fluted tarts-anyway, I digress.

I just wondered if there is a scent difference, storage difference, variety or something more tangible than a tart or a cup is bigger than one clamshell cube.

Thanks for helping me understand!

I personally do not buy tarts for the cute design. As soon as I put in my melter, it will melt anyway.

I have noticed though that with one vendor I buy from, the tarts in the plactic container, smells like plastic. But I buy BH&G at Walmart, and I do not smell in the plastic smell in their cubes.

I do not care what shape a tart is they all melt the same. i wont buy clam shells anymore because i hate the way the plastic smells.
I love the cups or just bagged in cello wrappers.

I'll buy clams if they are a company's only option. My problem is not the plastic, but the way the package looks after I pop a few cubes out. I prefer a neat, new package every time I select something to melt. Weird, I know. That's why I prefer the single scallops or cups.

That said, I am a sucker for the shaped melts, no matter what sized package. The bakery kind look yummy displayed in a dish and they are fun to pop in a melter.

It really depends on the vendor. For some I prefer the scallops...others the cups. I've only come across one vendor that had "smelly" clams. I buy whatever comes out the least expensive most of the time. ;) If a vendor only sells clams...I'm in. If the cups are $1.50 but the clams are $3.00...I go for the clams cause I'd get 3 melts out of a clam (2 cubes each time). Clams are harder to store and take up more room but a deals a deal. [smilie=th_thumbs20up] I do like the cute tarts just to show them off or display them sometimes.

I have had the plastic smell also from the clam shells.I do not really care hopw they look as once they are in the burner who can see them? Mine are up high enough that you cannot see the tart. Thanks,Angelina

It doesn't matter one way or the other to me. Clams are usually a better buy if a vendor offers both cups and clams. Usually, I only have to use one cube per melter so I feel like I get more bang for my buck. Also, one cube is the perfect size for plug-ins. I don't notice a plastic smell with clams. I always cut the 2 oz. tart cups in half or even thirds to get more uses out of it that way. If the scent isn't strong enough then I can just add more to it. I think shaped melts are fun to give as gifts or to receive, but I don't buy them for my own use.

I prefer tart cups for convenience - easier storage for me and I just pop open the lid and get them into the melter quickly. I especially prefer the larger tart cups. Scallops are a 2nd favorite with clamshells being my least favorite. I have only occasionally noticed a plastic-y smell. The main reason I don't prefer them is because they are a bit more difficult to store.

I love the shapes for something fun and different. I have more than enough of "regular" shaped melts, so the cute shaped melts bring in some novelty.

You may be on to something!

I bought and then gave away like 10 clams that just arrived because they smelled like the scent but then motor oil (husband is a race car driver otherwise I'd not know this for the life of me).

I really thought that my nose had something against soy wax. Sounds as if it could be the clam containers.

Good to know. I may just try fluted tarts and see what I think. Thanks so much!!

Karen, I have noticed that "sometimes" soy does have a strange cold sniff...."sometimes" it goes away after a couple days/weeks...unfortunately, sometimes it doesn't. [smilie=th_sign0164]

I really dont care, and havent noticed a plastic smell. I Love Pure Integrity Soy Candles clam shells. For a clean smell, Mineral Springs was a great strong thrower.
