Introduction to my review of the “Spectrum Collection” from Ergo:
For this review, I was able to try three scents from Ergo Candle’s Spectrum collection. I was so excited to get them because these are the candles that first drew my attention to Ergo Candles. This is the collection that comes in those ultra-cool colorful striped boxes that are so clearly associate with the Ergo Candle brand.
The Spectrum collection is Ergo Candle’s most popular line and with 22 different scents, it was hard to narrow down my choices to just a few. The entire line of Ergo Candle’s Spectrum collection can be found at Scents&Sprays… one look at all of the interesting scent descriptions, and you’ll see what I mean.Being a luxury brand, these candles cost a bit more than my everyday fare, but luckily, the candles are still an affordable splurge. What impressed me the most is how Ergo Candles smaller sized 7 ounce jar can easily out perform some other brand’s larger sized jars. It’s always been about the scent, and for me, by golly, these candles deliver.
What do my Spectrum Candles from Ergo look like?
These are the fun colored, boxed jars that had initially caught my eye on Scents & Sprays website. The boxes are all ready for gift giving with their funky retro colors striped down the box sides. The box colors bring to mind retro fashions like go-go boots, false eyelashes and clothing made from vinyl, but they have a hipster kind of modern flair also. The presentation was exciting to look at, and the candles smelled good even while still in the boxes.
The 7 ounce highball glass style containers have a thick glass base and a round Ergo label on the side with the scent name listed. The labels look trendy, but are still easy to peel off for a sleek look. The candles inside were simply white, so the collection’s name, Spectrum, must be referring to the wide range of scent, not color. I’m sure that is keeping it natural and all, but I wouldn’t have minded a colorful candle to match the packaging. What can I say… I like color.
How did my Spectrum Collection Candles from Ergo smell?
The Birch scent is described as basically the entire tree:
“Here we have taken the birch tree and given you all associated with its scent in the forest. We give you the bark, the birch leaf, the moss and even the dry leaves fro the forest floor. Along with oil from the tree we include oils such as oakmoss, geranium & clove basil.”
This scent didn’t appeal to me as much as I had hoped. I would have liked a bit more sweetness, or perhaps a touch of floral. It had a somewhat flat, almost bitter oak kind of scent, that did remind me of the dark bottoms of trees and forest leaves, but it lacked warmth. My Birch candle was the strongest thrower of all three… figures, right? It easily filled a medium sized room and was trying to conquer the hallway too… and doing a darn good job of it I might add. This woodsy fragrance is authentic smelling… strong and vital, and seemed more complex than the other two candle scents in this review. My husband enjoyed this scent, so personal preference is certainly subjective when it comes to fragrance. Even though this scent wasn’t to my taste, I would still recommend it to anyone with a love of natural, outdoorsy, earthy fragrances.
Here is Ergo Candle’s description for Truffle:
“Dark Chocolate, Coriander, Tahitian Vanilla”
Now we’re talking. I have had bath and body products before with a chocolate and coriander blend and liked it so I was really looking forward to trying this Truffle scented candle.
This scent was everything I had hoped it would be. It was a yummy semi-sweet chocolate, with an almost caramel-y core. I could easily picture a nutty nougat dipped in chocolate and rolled in a bitter cocoa powder. The coriander gives it a toasty, baked quality. All that from one candle scent? Yes, please.
I enjoyed this scent immensely, but as good as it was, it was not particularly unusual. I’ve smelled the scent before, or at least something very similar here and there, so for that reason alone, I would probably pass this by next time in favor of one of Ergo’s other, more exclusive fragrances.
In true Ergo Candle fashion, the Truffle jar had a great, strong throw, filling my open kitchen, and making everyone drool. This candle packed a serious wollop!
I think this is the funniest name for a scent, so I had to give it a try. Here is how Ergo describes Monkey Grass:
“Vetiver, lemongrass & cedarwood. Shut your eyes and it will place you in the middle of a meadow during the spring time”
Did I miss an important reference? Is it wrong of me to be wanting bananas in a scent with the word Monkey in the title? Well, yes, as it turns out, I did miss a very important reference. All I can say is thank goodness for Google searches. As most of the planet must already know, Monkey Grass is a variety of perennial, ornamental grasses and has absolutely nothing to do with the banana eating monkeys swinging from the trees. This is very green grassy scent, but not as much a fresh cut lawn… it’s a
much deeper, more interesting watery grass scent. It’s very calming, which must be the Vetiver’s influence.
Since I took myself to Google school with the monkey grass search, I decided to do a little extra credit work with Vetiver too. It turns out that Vetiver oil is restorative, calming and is sometimes used to help maintain a person’s emotional equilibrium.
I really enjoyed this scent. It is very fresh and appealing, especially in the Springtime. It is simply beautiful, and it is the type of fragrance that is enjoyable all day long. I never got tired of it… In fact, I wish I had more.
The candle had a good throw… If not a house filler, it is certainly a room filler. I had this candle in my powder room at first, thinking it would be an appropriate scent for that room, but soon brought it out to my larger area to fully enjoy.
How did my Ergo Spectrum Collection candles burn?
All three of these candles burned the same way… perfectly! I could not have asked for better burning candles. The wax pooled to the edges of the glass quickly and kept a steady 1/2 inch deep pool for the duration of the burns, leaving a clean glass with no residue.Even with a robust, steady flame, my candles burned very slowly which I thought made them almost an economical luxury…an oxymoron, I know, but somehow fitting.
Closing to my review of candled from Ergo’s Spectrum Collection…
Er’go Candles has quickly become one of my favorite luxury brands. While the candles and packaging are trendy and unique, Ergo Candles are more than just a pretty face. These candles are strongly scented and the scents are complex and interesting. My favorites of these three was the super fresh smelling Monkey Grass and the decedent Truffle. There are plenty more scents to check out and I highly recommend these candles.
Happy candle burning!
