 Introduction to my Review of Emily's Candles & Bath:
A fresh scent, a bakery and a floral all walk into a bar... stop me if you've heard this joke before... all right, so my three scent choices may seem like strange bedfellows but I did have a logical reason for choosing them all together for this review. I wanted to really get a feel for what my next vendor had to offer. For the record, I chose a bunch of  different products too.
Ebay is a launch pad for many small businesses, so what better place to look for a fresh new candle maker? I looked over several storefronts and decided on Emily's Candles & Bath. The store was well organized and easy to navigate. Emily's homepage showed a steady track record of customer service so I felt confident purchasing an assortment of products to review.
Emily's Candles & Bath is a home based soy candle company in Illinois and has been in business since 2002. They offer a variety of hand poured soy wax candles and melts in over 70 different scents, so for this review, I chose all across the board with my review selections... see? Perfectly logical.
Combining shipping on multiple items at Emily's Candles & Bath was simple. I just ordered without issuing payment and waited for an adjusted invoice total. It came within the hour with a link to Paypal where I paid once for my entire order including combined shipping. |
What do my candles from Emily's Candles & Bath look like?
My package was shipped out right away and arrived within days of ordering. I received emails when I placed my order and then again when my box was shipped.
My candles arrived wrapped in newspaper and packing peanuts so I didn't spend much time fawning over the packaging. Perhaps I've become pampered by pretty paper and presentation, because I felt no thrill opening this box. My candles were intact...that's most important.
Each product, from clamshell to candle, sported a large brown paper label that wasn't my style and couldn't be peeled off... darn it. The 9 oz and 4 oz jar candles were pretty, beveled, clear glass jars with simple gold lids. The four pack of soy tarts came in a clear acetate box that was probably pretty when first packaged, but arrived smudged and messy.
My clamshell melt was not filled to the top like I have become accustomed to. Emily's fills their clamshells only up about half way, leaving each cube loosely separated, which explains the slightly lower price. I didn't notice this when I ordered so I was a bit disappointed by it. I even went back to make sure there was no mistake. |
How did my candles from Emily's Candles & Bath smell?
Cucumber Aloe
 This scent is described as:
"Freshly sliced cucumbers blended with aloe vera create this clean and refreshing fragrance."
I rolled the dice with this unusual scent when I ordered it, and it turned out to be a great gamble. There is something about an aloe scent that just makes me feel healthier and more energized. This is a lovely fragrance... a unique, spa-like scent with no perfume overtones. Clean and refreshing is the exact way to describe this one... It was a cool and crisp blend of fresh cucumber and soothing aloe.
Even though I ordered the smaller sized jar, this scent easily filled my whole bedroom. Both the melts and the light green jar candle had a strong throw.
If you want a glimpse of Spring without completely going off season with your melt choice, this is the one...It smelled strong and uplifting... I loved it.
Cherry Cobbler
"A sweet cherry aroma combined with the appetizing smell of bona fide freshly baked double- crusted pastry. Enhanced with faint notes of vanilla and a bit of cinnamon."
That is a tempting description. I only wish the candle had smelled half as good as what I read. This scent missed the mark for me...I was bummed. I smelled only a blandly sweet dough with the vaguest hint of berry. My red 4 oz candle had little throw, and I didn't even care. The scent was not authentic to my nose and I would not choose this again.
I also had this scent in a four pack of tarts so I melted two of them in side by side melters and still could not squeeze much scent out. I think this is more of a reflection on this particular scent for me, rather than the quality of the products.
Tuberose
This scent is described as:
"Handpicked from the tropics, a deep, strong floral with a creamy undertone."
Emily's thoughtfully made a note here that it is not a rose scent.
 I knew what I was looking for when I ordered this one... this was the scent that the rest of my order was built around. Tuberose is my favorite floral fragrance, so I chose the largest sample I could...a 9 oz pink jar candle.
I had my order sitting on a side table until I was ready to test them. While I was at my desk, I kept smelling a mysterious flower scent and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. I was melting fall scents in the house that day... none of which had any floral notes in them, and my Tuberose jar candle had a tightly sealed lid, but again and again the breeze from my open windows would blow this lovely faint scent my way.
Finally I had to find where this was coming from. I walked all around the house sniffing my melters and the open windows like a drug sniffing police dog. At last I found the source... It was from one little sample Tuberose tart that Emily's Candle & Bath had tucked in extra. I could not believe how potent this one little bagged tart was.
Needless to say, I cleared out all the other scents and for the rest of that afternoon, I enjoyed this exotic Tuberose. The 9 oz candle had a terrific throw just like the little sample tart did, and filled my largest space. This was a beautiful floral and was just what I had hoped for.

 How did my candles from Emily's Candles & Bath burn?
My jar candles all burned evenly and cleanly. I needed to keep the wicks trimmed, and occasionally let the jars cool because these did burn very hot. The jar's beveled glass made an interesting shadow play on the table when the candles were lit...if only I could have gotten those brown labels off. The melts did well and lasted a good long time.

 Closing remarks to my review of Emily's Candles & Bath:
I had some issues aesthetically with packaging and labeling but these were minor points. Overall, I was pleased with my purchases from Emily's Candles & Bath. Even though I didn't care for the Cherry Cobbler scent, I adored the Tuberose and the Cucumber Aloe fragrances. I would not hesitate to try more scents here.
I experienced great customer service and communication, fast shipping, and quality products.
