Christina Rylan scented candle reviews, Candlefind.com, the site for candle loversIntroduction to my review of Soy Candles by Phebes:

I'm a little late getting this review posted but I guess it's better late than never. Soy Candles by Phebes is a company I had never heard of until a few months ago and I've got to say, this site is quite eye catching. One of the first aspects of this site that hit me was their simple yet striking home page which immediately caught my attention... so much so that I found myself "wanting" to enter and see more. The home page is so simple with little frills, it's a gray background with a vibrant picture of (I'm guessing) an endless soybean field or wheat field maybe? It's hard to tell. Just the other day though, it used to be a different picture of a blue sky, white clouds with green fields (I liked that one better). So, they must change the picture on their home page every so often.

Another great selling point to this site? They offer free shipping on any order, any size. In this economy, that is an incredible lure and makes it easier to take the plunge and try their products. Who offers free shipping on any size order (especially small) these days? I think that's an amazing offer.

Interestingly, I didn't pick out these candles to review.... they were instead sent to me "just because" by the owner (Mike Hipp) and I decided to review them last minute. I was sent two floral fragrances called Red Poppy and Fragrant Tea Olive as well as two fruity scents called Butt Naked and Orange Vanilla. I would have never in a million years picked out floral scents to review but, it's kind of fun reviewing scents I would normally steer clear of. Throwing two fruity scents in the mix helped to balance it out. In the end, I enjoyed all four fragrances and had a great time with this review.

What does my Soy Candles by Phebes look like?

I really like the look of these candles. They remind me of luxury brand candlesSoy Candles by Phebes scented candle review, Candlefind.com, the site for candle lovers but at a fraction of the cost. The size candles I sampled were 8.5oz (a nice size) and all soy. The glass jar is super thick and heavy and absolutely reusable when you finish burning your candles. The wax color is a natural white with a single thick woven cotton wick perfectly centered in each candle.

Each candle comes packaged in a brown box that fits each candle snugly.... A Soy Candles by Phebes label is on the face of each box with a picture correlating to each scent name. What I loved best was there are no labels on the candles themselves... I really prefer that because then your candle can go anywhere in your house and it fits right in.

The whole look is very simple yet classy. A+ for presentation!

How did my candles smell?

Red Poppy

Scent description from Soy Candles by Phebes website:

"Soy Candles by Phebes is extremely proud to be able to offer you red poppy. It's rich floral scent is amazing. My personal favorite scent."

Don't you just love it when a scent description tells you absolutely nothing?

Okay, down to business... what did this candle smell like? As far as floral scents go... this fragrance pleasantly surprised me. It was definitely floral but reminded me more of a light floral soap smell rather than a heavy flower scent.

To give you a little background... florals are not a favorite of mine so when I'm Red Poppy scented candle review, Soy Candles by Phebes, Candlefind.com, the site for candle loversreviewing one, I'm kind of at a disadvantage. When I do plunge into the world of floral, my nose tends to rate them by weight from heavy to light. Heavy florals, to me, are the lilacs, roses, jasmines etc... I call it the "gag factor"... if the scent gags me, it's heavy and it's not gonna last very long in my house. Florals like Sweet Pea or Plumeria for examples (to me), are lighter floral scents and I can generally handle those much easier. Rating Red Poppy, I would probably call it a light floral and absolutely doable for me, meaning, if you normally shy from floral scents, you would probably like this fragrance for a nice change of pace. I burned this candle in my bathroom and I thought it was perfect there and actually burned it from beginning to end. It was very fresh and airy for a floral fragrance.

Now to describe this scent, I almost want to say it was not a feminine floral but more masculine if that makes any sense... almost like it had some green notes or maybe musk in the mix to tone it down. I don't know what red poppies smell like but if they smell anything like this candle, I'm liking it.

As far as scent throw, on a scale of 1 to 10, I would have to rate this candle a 5, maybe a 6... the scent throw was pretty soft but honestly, I liked that. Burning this in a large bathroom, the scent held its own but didn't overpower the room. I was very happy with this fragrance and do recommend it for floral or fresh scented lovers alike.

Butt Naked

"Fresh green apples perfectly harmonized with refreshing melons and juicy pears. A spring and summertime hit."
Butt Naked scented candle review, Soy Candles by Phebes, Candlefind.com, the site for candle lovers
Okay, first thing first... go check out the picture for this scent description, OMG!!!! Now you know a dude put that picture up because a woman would never be so bold. Hilarious!!!!!

I've always loved this scent... it's a fresh/fruity fragrance great for anytime of the year. Burning this candle, I have to say this scent from Soy Candles by Phebes was different from any other version I've tried in the past. I don't know... it wasn't a super fruity scent to me... I thought I actually even smelled a tinge of something floral in the mix. I couldn't pick out green apples which (in most cases) is a really dominant scent I can usually pick out anytime it's present... I couldn't pick out melons or pears either. It was interesting and quite frankly, I liked this scent regardless.

I burned this candle in my bathroom and once again, it performed perfect there. I even received a few compliments from guests when I had it burning. Scent throw on a scale of 1 to 10, I would probably rate this a 6/7... it fragranced my big bathroom and even filtered into the hallway. Again, not a super strong "in your face" scent but more subtle.

Fragrant Tea Olive

This was a very interesting fragrance and to me, one of the most unique floral scents I've smelled in a long time. Not that I'm a floral expert by any means or smell them often, I don't, I just thought this one was different. Here is the scent description from Soy Candles by Phebes' website:

"Known as Fragrant Tea Olive, Osmanthus is an evergreen bush that blooms in late fall through early spring. The incomparable fragrance is, at once, fruity and floral. Very exotic and a must experience to believe scent."

When I first put this candle up to my nose, I thought it was totally and Fragrant Tea Olive scented candle review, Soy Candles by Phebes, Candlefind.com, the site for candle loverscompletely floral. If there was fruit in the mix, I wasn't smelling it. And on my "gag factor" scale with the cold sniff, my nose rated it an 8, maybe even a 9... it was pretty strong. Now please remember, just because I rate this a heavy scent doesn't mean I can't appreciate its uniqueness and quality (I really try hard to do that)... so as far as floral scents go, this scent was lovely.

Was this scent exotic like the scent description proclaims? I think so... it certainly emits a heady floral scent that was deep and rich. To me, this scent reminded me of literally putting your nose in a huge bouquet of wild flowers and inhaling its aroma.

The scent throw was pretty decent as well. I burned this in my bathroom as the two previous and it scented the room and then some. Again, not an "in your face" fragrance but one you definitely notice when you walk in the room. If you love floral scents, definitely try this one.

Orange Vanilla
Orange Vanilla scented candle review, Soy Candles by Phebes, Candlefind.com, the site for candle lovers
This was by far my favorite scent of the bunch. Love orange - love vanilla - combined - they make one yummy blob of creamy/citrus bliss. I could have sniffed this candle for days.

I didn't see a scent description on their site for this scent but I really didn't need one since it's pretty straightforward.... It's a classic creamy and sweet orange vanilla... it was delicious, so smooth and velvety, a person could drown in this scent. Oh yeah, I liked it!

I have a love/hate relationship with some versions of Orange Vanilla or "Creamsicle scents" I should say. Some are so thick and sweet, they almost make my teeth hurt and I can't handle them for long. This version was perfect, not too strong, not too light.... A perfect strength that had me sighing in contentment every time I walked into the room. LOVED this one!!

Candle flameHow did candles from Soy Candles by Phebes burn?

All 4 candles burned very evenly from beginning to end. One bit of advice though, keep up on your wick trimming. All 4 candles burned great for me but if I wasn't vigilant on wick trimming, the flames got pretty big.

Closing to my review:

Overall, I'm pretty pleased with my experience with Soy Candles by Phebes. $12.98 for a, 8.5oz candle including shipping is a great deal. Their presentation is quite savvy and to me, is very simplistic and eco-friendly which is exactly Soy Candles by Phebes scented candle review, Candlefind.com, the site for candle loverswhat they set out to accomplish. Luxury style candles at the lowest cost possible with environmentally friendly packaging. Very simple and straightforward.

I thought these candles were on the lighter side so please keep that in mind if you give them a try. I think for an all soy candle and the size offered, they're a great quality and perfect for smaller rooms. If you prefer the wickless route, they also offer clamshell melts, free shipping. Their scent selection is quite interesting with a clear and easy site to browse. I enjoyed my entire experience.

Happy candle smelling!
