scented candles from various candle companies…
Intro to “Battle of the Watermelons” candle review…
We’ve been on a mission lately to get more comparison reviews up on CandleFind. It’s no easy feat considering the amount of candles one has to burn of the same scent. Can you say fragrance overload? I know Carolyn’s had her fill of Strawberry scents for the next decade so I decided to let her off the hook with this one and took on the “Battle of The Watermelons” review. I love all melon scents so I thought…. “piece of cake!”
Watermelon is a very popular fragrance and just about every single company out there carries this scent so you can imagine how many are available, hundreds! I wish I could review them all for you but there’s no way I could burn that many and have my review done in a month. I’m fast but not that fast. 🙂 So, I chose six companies to review, a couple of big names and the rest were smaller companies.
I was really looking forward to this review because I love the scent of watermelon but ironically, I’ve never burned this scent before in a candle. I had never thought about it before ’till now but all the melon scents I’ve burned have either been cucumber melons, cantaloupes or honeydews. I’ve always had this scent on my list of “to burns” and have plenty in my inventory but never got around to burning them. Until now.
For Battle of The Watermelons, I decided to buy a huge wedge of the real thing just so I could sniff it for this review, I wanted to see how the real McCoy compared to all my candles. In all honesty, none did and that really surprised me. All the scents I tried if put up against the real thing smelled candyish and very sweet and smelled like you would think a watermelon should smell. Real watermelon, “in my opinion” doesn’t really have a distinctive scent but instead, I think tastes better than it smells. That’s why I think it’s not an easy fragrance to duplicate. After smelling the real thing and then tasting it, whoa, what a difference! Watermelon tastes much better than it smells. It’s almost like tasting it helps you imagine what it should smell like. Hope that made sense.
Well, to close this intro, I hope my watermelon candle feast helps you in some small way, it was fun burning them all and writing this review so good luck on your own watermelon quest. There are SO many choices out there so I didn’t even break the water so to speak with my measly 6 in this review but it’s at least a good start.
Candle #1: Yankee Candle – Juicy Watermelon
Juicy Watermelon is one of Yankee’s new spring/summer scents and one to never pass up a melon scent, I nabbed it pretty quick (both jars & tarts). When I bought them, I hadn’t even had a watermelon review in the works but it worked out perfect that I had them on hand. Can’t have a scent comparison without a Yankee candle now can we?
Did I like Yankee’s Juicy Watermelon? I’m sad to report that although this scent was decent, I wasn’t really thrilled overall with the scent of my candles or tarts. The fragrance itself was lacking something and I’m not quite sure what. I want to say sweetness and authenticity but the main factor for my dissatisfaction was the lack of scent throw. This fragrance had almost no scent at all. I had two candles burning in my great room and I was lucky if I could get a slight whiff walking past the candles. My tart was no better. Normally when I melt tarts, they’re super strong and scent my entire family room. After I had it melting awhile, I could smell it but it wasn’t strong and it just didn’t do anything for me. I even tried melting some in a tea light burner and electric burner to see if there was a difference and there was none.
Candle #2: Candles by Victoria – Watermelon
I tried their 16oz mason jars and melts and overall, I think this is a nice version of Watermelon. It had that sweet and juicy aroma I couldn’t help but sigh over so this one gets a definite two thumbs up from me. My only qualm would be that the 16oz mason jars I burned were not quite strong enough so I think next time, I may go for their apothecary jars instead with the hope I’ll get a stronger scent throw.
The tarts however kicked you know what! They were majorly strong… I was in watermelon heaven all day. The fragrance was so sweet and delicious that it had me sniffing the air and craving the real thing. To me, that’s a clear sign I have a winning scent.
I would recommend if you like strong throws, go for the tarts or a larger jar. I felt although the 16oz mason jars did give a pleasant throw, the strength wasn’t strong enough for my personal taste.
Candle #3: Gold Canyon Candle Co. – Watermelon
I’m a big Gold Canyon – their candles in my experience consistently give strong scent throws in just about every scent I’ve tried so after burning a few watermelon scents that gave lighter throws, I had high hopes for this one. Just the initial sniff test told me this fragrance was comparable to Candles by Victoria. It smelled sweet and delicious so I couldn’t wait to light these.
I lit two 16oz candles in my great-room. Normally, I start to notice GC candles pretty quick, but these actually took a while longer. I would say a few hours before I really began to notice the scent. Even then, the strength seemed under medium and didn’t saturate my great-room like I expected. You could say I was somewhat disappointed. What I could smell was great and enjoyable though, I just would have liked them stronger. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would have to rate the strength of this one a 6, maybe a 7 but that’s pushing it.
Candle #4: Blue Moon Candle Co. – Wild Watermelon
Blue Moon Candle Co. is fast becoming a new favorite company of mine. I’ve reviewed 3 of their candles last year and enjoyed them so much, I recently placed an order to try more of their fragrances. So far, I’m doing a happy dance over all my choices and am very pleased. Blue Moon’s watermelon scent happened to be among my picks and happily, they also sent me a jar in watermelon just for this review.
After finishing up 3 candles in Watermelon that were light in strength, I was beginning to wonder whether it was me or if watermelon is naturally a light scent. Just smelling Blue Moon’s version told me it smelled a bit different than the previous three I just finished burning. I say that because smelling this scent cold, I almost want to say it seemed smoother and creamier and didn’t smell like candy as the previous four did. Nothing against candy either because I do like that too. This one just stood out more to me.
My jar was 6oz so I naturally burned this candle in a smaller room (my powder room) and the scent strength was perfect there. Every time I walked into my bathroom, the fragrance was bold and strong. It smelled AWESOME! Sweet and smooth and exactly how I would imagine the taste of biting into the real thing. As far as scent strength, that was kind of hard to gauge being that my candle was small but I’m guessing this scent is medium in strength. The tart in this scent was wonderful as well so I don’t think you can go wrong with either.
So far, this is my favorite of the bunch. If you like watermelon scents, try Blue Moon‘s version, I thought it was very good.
Candle #5 – Spotted Hog Candle Co – Waterlemon
What’s really cool about these candles, you get to choose the color of your wax. So if you want it watermelon pink to match the scent, you got it! Or if you want it plain white to keep it as natural as possible… you can do that too. It’s a nice added bonus to picking out your candles on this site.
Scent description from Spotted Hog’s site: “Just like the real thing”
Can’t get any simpler than that. Smelling this candle cold, it smelled like a piece of watermelon tart candy. It made my mouth water just smelling it unlit. I can’t believe after burning through 4 candles, I’m still excited to keep going. The scent once lit was fantastic and strong. It doesn’t have the realistic quality like Blue Moon’s version but it was still a nice one and very strong. Loved it!
Now that I’m at the end of my watermelon journey and writing this review, I have to say it’s not an easy fragrance to duplicate. I had never really paid attention before because all the watermelon scents I’ve smelled seemed authentic and I thought it was an easy fragrance to duplicate. Now that I’ve burned 5 in a row, I have to say that it’s not. There are so many versions out there and while many are great, some aren’t. If you’re not after authenticity but instead just enjoy that sweet candy like smell, then any version is probably suitable. I happen to like those as much as any. My only must is scent throw. I want my candles to be strong and want to smell them loud and clear all the time, not just when I leave the room and come back in.
With that said, I think tarts are the way to go with this scent and that’s the route I’m taking from now on. You on the other hand may pick up the scent better than I did and would therefore have better luck with jars. Who’s to say?
Of the 6 I tried, I would say Blue Moon and has my stamp for authenticity. Candles by Victoria and Spotted Hogs were great. I would pass on Yankee unless you catch a killer sale and Gold Canyon, you could take it or leave it as it was just “ok”.
I had fun with this but have to say I watermeloned out now and am glad it’s at an end.
Good luck CandleFinders and happy candle shopping!
