Introduction to my Hidden Treasure candle review:
I will say, presentation is very important to me. I am a big online shopper and a website is my first glimpse into a company and how their products are presented. I gravitate towards clean cut and professional sites. My first click into Hidden Treasures website was my first look into this candle company and I liked what I saw. It had a very nice and professional design with large and crisp/clear pictures. I love it when sites take the extra effort to take professional pictures and big enough where you can actually see the detail in each candle… this site delivered. Pictures are critical to me because I’m not shopping in a store where I can hold, feel and smell the candles I’m purchasing. I’m relying on a company’s ability to visually show me what they’re selling. And every detail, especially pictures and descriptions help me decide.
The header at the top of their site has all their categories laid out so you can browse scents by type or style. Once you click on a scent, it takes you to that specific scent’s page with another larger vivid picture, scent description and everything else you need to know about the candle. Very nicely done.
Hidden Treasure candles are all soy and are offered in narrow tumbler style glass containers. I had a hard time choosing which scents I wanted to review but ended up with two fresh uplifting scents…. Lavender Vanilla and Southern Sunshine. Two perfect fragrances to brighten up my home.
What did my Hidden Treasure candles look like?
My candles were both 20oz tumbler style candles with flat glass lids that fit snugly on both candles. On the face of one side has a label with a picture corresponding to the scent. Southern Sunshine had a picture of a lemon tree full of lemons surrounded by grass and falling lemons. The wax color was a bright yellow. Lavender Vanilla had a picture of lavender stalks with blooming lavender buds, the wax color a pretty light purple. Both candles had one wick perfectly centered. Added bonus, the surface of both candles was covered in matching colored glitter so both surfaces shined and sparkled. Very dazzling and pretty.
On the other side of the label, you will see a round sticker that has a great big X on it….. “X” marks the spot. That is where your hidden treasure awaits. Also attached to each candle is a rolled up scroll type piece of paper. Almost like a treasure map… when you unroll it, this poem is on one side in a cursive type font:
“Hidden below the depths of the soy, lies a treasure for you to keep and enjoy. Many challenges may take you to get to your goal so light your flame and let it glow. Just remember that fire is hot and as always “X” marks the spot. As you wait for your treasure reveal, enjoy the pleasant scent appeal.”
CLEVER!!!! On the other side of the scroll is more detail on your candle and how to take out your hidden treasure once you reach the spot where it’s at. It also tells you what prizes may await you. Lots of instructions and detail. I have to mention, my kids LOVED the idea behind these candles, especially the scroll. They thought it was a treasure map and both anxiously watched as I opened it and read the poem. Now they’re both excited for me to light my candles to see what’s hidden inside. I’ve been strictly and firmly forbidden NOT to pull the treasures out without them present. So this is turning into a fun activity we’ll be doing as a family… both my kids are beyond excited with these candles.
What did my candles from Hidden Treasure smell like?
Cold sniff, Mmmmmm!!! A strong wonderful and fresh lemon scent… my absolute favorite!! Here is the scent description from Hidden Treasures site:
“You’ll love the Southern way of enjoying summer once you light up this candle. Its aromatic blend of lemons, tangerines, and sweet Georgia peach is the perfect companion to an evening spent cooling off on the porch with sweet tea.”
This scent was a refreshing citrus blast and to me, it was all lemon! I couldn’t wait to light this candle. I lit it in my bedroom (my official review room) and waited awhile before checking back on it… once I did, I was greeted to a wonderful and strong citrus and lemony scent. LOVED!!!! The strength is perfect. You notice the scent immediately when walking into the room. I found myself stopping often to just breathe this fragrance in. And boy is this candle really pretty burning. You can see the glitter sparkling on the surface of the melt pool.
So now we waited… all three of us. My boys would tell me, “Mom, we’re gonna go check on the treasure candle” and I would have to tell them each time it’s not ready. The anticipation was killing them.
On the 4th day it was ready… we followed the instructions and used tweezers to pull out the foil pouch… got it all cleaned off (which was really easy to do by the way) and broke it open to find a really pretty heart pendant on a silver chain. My 9 year old son was beside himself… he thought it was the most beautiful necklace he had ever beheld. It was so much fun watching his face light up as we opened it. It’s now hanging around his neck until he decides which lucky girl gets to receive it as a present from him. SOOOOOO cute!!
This was so much fun and a total hit! My boys are now anxiously awaiting the next “treasure candle” I’m getting ready to light… Lavender Vanilla.
Initial cold sniff… it smelled like lavender and baby powder to me. I’m not a floral fan but I’ve slowly acquired a taste for lavender scents and first impression with this scent was a fresh and powdery lavender.
Scent description from Hidden Treasure’s website:
“A classic go-to scent to calm the senses. Lavender and vanilla blend together for a fragrance that blooms. Underneath the floral scent, you’ll find a hint of sweet apple blossom. Feel free to introduce some zen to your life with the Lavender Vanilla candle.”
I can see how they would call this a “calming” scent… I found it very soothing. It reminded me very much of a scent called “Bedtime Bath” out there. I swear I can smell baby powder which is an element in Bedtime Bath. I decided to burn this candle in my master bathroom figuring the powdery scent would be perfect there.
How did my candle burn and smell? This fragrance gave a very soft and subtle scent throw. I’m really glad I decided to burn this one in my bathroom – the soft scent throw was perfect in that size room. The fragrance was exactly like it smelled cold… a soft baby powder lavender. It smelled really fresh and soft. This candle also had pretty glitter lining the top of the candle… only with this candle, all the glitter floated to the top of the scent pool the entire time it was burning. This candle also struggled with getting a complete melt pool… not sure if it was because of the glitter or not, I don’t know.
The treasure inside: We waited the allotted 4 days to pull the hidden treasure out. This time, we found a really pretty silver necklace with long dangling moon and star charms. My youngest son had big bright eyes with oooooh and aaaahs when it was pulled out and cleaned off. He plans on giving this one to his teacher for Christmas. Too cute!!
How did my candles from Hidden Treasure burn?
Southern Sunshine burned perfect. With the glitter on top they were so gorgeous burning. No soot or wasted wax. I just had to constantly keep the wicks trimmed (which is normal) or the flame would get pretty big.
Lavender Vanilla was more of a struggle burning. It never really attained a complete melt pool so there was a thick lining of wax around the edge of the glass all the way around. This made it a bit more difficult getting the pouch out with the necklace but we did it.
Closing to my review:
This was a really fun review and I enjoyed the whole process. The candles were very nice, elegant and fragrant. Southern Sunshine was definitely my favorite of the two but then Lemon always wins over anything else… it’s my favorite.
I don’t think I would purchase these candles for everyday burning but as a treat every once in awhile… you bet! Most of all, these candles would make wonderful gifts and with Christmas around the corner, these candles are perfect for gift giving! Not only do you get a fragrant candle but a delightful gift inside – a two for one! I loved that my kids got involved and showed such excitement with this review. They followed both candles progress everyday and were constantly chattering about them. Both my boys totally understand about candle safety/danger and always steer clear of all my burning candles so this may not be something you can share with all kids… it’s your discretion of course.
In closing, this was fun! I enjoyed both candles and would for sure purchase more… especially for gifts.
Happy candle hunting!
