Down South Candle Co. is a "southern" online candle store located in Lagrange Georgia. When I first went on this website to look around, the first thing I noticed was a beautiful white plantation style house at the top of their home page with large sweeping trees swaying in the breeze. I imagined Scarlet O'Hara walking across that glorious deck holding a scented candle, ha, if only she could have been so lucky. :-)

Down South Candle Co. offers 43 fragrances in I believe, 4 different style jars including an 8oz tin. I did notice while browsing their site they also offer clamshell tarts but only in one fragrance and a sampling of scalloped tarts. Their candles are all soy or a blended paraffin so you have the choice in what type of wax you want. I have no real preference and burn both equally but I know many of you out there prefer one over the other. They also offer soaps, lotions and sea salts for your pampering pleasure as well if that's something you're interested in.

I picked out 4 fragrances to review… Pink Sugar was sent to me in their all soy wax and the rest were in their paraffin blended wax. Shipping was very quick and my candles were well packaged. It's always fun opening a newly received candle box... even as much as I receive them, you would think I'd get sick of it. My husband thinks I'm a complete nut because I'm as excited every single time. Such is the life of an obsessed candle lover. :-)

What Do My Down South Candles Look Like?
shorties candlesPink Sugar is a 7oz tumbler and pink in color. Beach Baby was a 16oz beehive style apothecary jar, the wax color a pretty sea blue. (pic shows different style jar for Beach Baby) Amber Romance was an 8oz tin, the color a dark brown. Southern Sunshine is an 8oz style tumbler, the color yellow. All my candles were single wicked and had a clear label on the face of the candle with the company name and scent type.

How Did My Down South Candles Smell?

Pink Sugar:

This is a very popular fragrance and one I'm seeing everywhere. Always the curious one, I had to try it for myself to see what all the hype is about but before I go into what I thought of this scent, here's the scent description:

"The delicious blend of cotton candy, lemon drops, and raspberry jam with slight undertones of musk."

Now I'm not 100% positive but I'm pretty sure this fragrance is a designer perfume of some sort because I've seen it on perfume sites everywhere too. I liked it, I liked it a lot and I think you could get away with burning this fragrance during all four seasons which is nice. The fragrance is very sexy and unique and kind of hard to describe. All the ingredients are blended beautifully but what stood out the most to me were the cotton candy and musk. I couldn't really smell lemon drops but I could make out raspberry.

My Pink Sugar candle was a small 7oz tumbler style jar and had one wick. Surprisingly for such a small jar, the fragrance was pretty strong. I burned this candle in my bedroom and it fragranced the room decently so I was impressed. A larger jar could easily fill a large room all by itself so keep that in mind when shopping for this fragrance. Pink Sugar is an excellent musky type scent and very sweet. I'm not sure why the description says an undertone of musk because to me, musk was very dominant, at least my nose thought so. I can see why it's so popular in a candle and perfume, it's very sexy and feminine. Definitely give this one a try if you like musky type perfume scents.

Beach Baby:

The name sold me, I thought it was cute and do enjoy tropical fragrances so this one was a clear no brainer to me. Here's the scent description for Beach Baby from Down South's website:

"A wonderful tropical blend of Hawaiian flowers, and delicious fruits."

Descriptions like this always make me go, hmmm?... because it doesn't really tell me anything. Now I have to sniff away till I can figure out what kind of flowers or fruit make up this candle. I would much rather have read, "A wonderful merge of plumeria's & ginger blended with mango and pomegranate" or something along those lines so I could then say, "yeah, I totally smelled all that" blah blah blah blah. With vague descriptions, my nose has to work in overdrive.

I picked Beach Baby for mainly one reason,¦ I pictured beach smells like sun tan oil, pineapple, coconut, you know, tropical scents. I totally discounted flowers in the mix which was stupid of me considering floral scents are not a favorite of mine but oh well (that's what I get for not reading the scent description first). By the way, the description I provided are the actual ingredients in case you were wondering. ;-)

So, plowing along, I lit this candle in my master bathroom and went about my business. I would say an hour went by before I went back to a very subtle fragrance of a floral/fruity smell. It wasn't strong at all, so, I moved the candle to a smaller bathroom. The fragrance was perfect in a smaller room which surprised me considering this candle was a 16oz jar. This tells me Beach Baby is a naturally light scent. I could be wrong on that but that's as good a guess as any.

I want you to know that when I buy candles and find that scent throws are light, I don't wig out. Not all fragrances give the same scent throw and not all scents are meant to be strong. It's just the nature of the beast. If I don't like it, I don't buy it again but I do pay attention to the burn performance and if I'm curious enough, I may email the company asking if the scent I bought is naturally light. Even if it's light and I liked the scent, I may buy it again since I do have small rooms where lighter scents work better.

With that said, Beach Baby was definitely light but smelled pretty good. To me, it smelled more floral than fruity so go for it floral lovers, you would probably like this one.
